There have been over a dozen games released in the Call of Duty franchise since its debut back in 2003. And, since the blockbuster launch of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, there has been an entry in the series every year. But is that wise? We've already seen the apparent end of the Guitar Hero franchise due to multiple yearly releases and a noticeable dip in quality. It makes you wonder if CoD is going to go the way of the plastic instrument as well. Considering Activision’s legal issues and unproven newcomer Sledgehammer Games supposedly developing the next title in the series, that may not be to far fetched. As a gamer that has spent most of the last few years playing CoD, I can’t help but notice the slight dip in quality. And this is what worries me.
Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."
Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.
2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.
MW 2019 is five years old at this point and on previous gen hardware, but it is still the best looking Call of Duty game to date.
MW was an excellent videogame. They messed up Spec Ops big time, but aside from this it was a huge step in the right direction initially. Most notably, at launch it seemed to come from a very cohesive creative vision that was felt across gameplay, to story to art style/visual direction. It was also very notably written by prominent ex-Naughty Dog guys that quit almost immediately before release.
That COMPLETELY dissolved through post-launch content and the full pivot to a "cross-mode" narrative that completely obliterated the cohesion in overall story direction. Warzone then "became" the new face of Call of Duty and the franchise completely removed itself from anything remotely creatively "good". It is a pure money machine, so I kinda get why they're doing it....but I personally completely lost interest.
I would love to see Infinity Ward move off CoD and get to make their own product with full control. They clearly have some massive talent in their ranks but it's perverted by Activision's corporate interests.
Call Of Duty is back with its yearly instalment, but is Modern Warfare 3 breaking new ground, or just a lazy cash grab? The answer may not surprise you in today's review from JDR.
Not too much too soon, just too much.
it makes money, what can i say? i agree though.
I think that the next COD titles won’t sell as well. The reasons I say this are:
Black Ops has a good zombie mode. It has an awesome training ground for people who like bots and want to play with friends, would like more than Team Deathmatch and free for all. Very good multiplayer and a decent single player game, the options that are given in power ups, kill streaks and the other ton of options are pretty good. What else could the next COD title do to exactly trump Black Ops. The only thing they need to do is do some DLC maps and weapons and call it good.
What would give Activision the impression COD is "too much too soon"? The back to back sales records?
COD4 was a breakthrough but everything after that was just professional franchise milking - sad but true!
