Cheap when compared to an iPhone

@Disagrees

There seems to be a huge animosity towards anything Sony. It is a shame people can't let it go. No other phone on the market will let us gamers play games on it like the Xperia Play.

BiggCMan5214d ago

And the iPhone isn't even the best out there haha. But yea 400 certainly isn't bad. Droid X, Evo 4G and iPhone 4 are all expensive as well. But where does this guy get the nerves saying "You can be sure the NGP will be priced higher than this"? WTF is that garbage, he has no clue how much NGP will cost, nor does anyone but Sony. Sounds like he is trying to get people away from it to me. Also, for billionth time, it is not a "Playstation Phone".

gorebago5214d ago

I just read that tmobile is releasing a new version (4g) of their samsung galaxy s phone for $150 this month. I have the verizon version and it's the best phone I've ever owned. For that price, it's a steal and the specs are comprable to the xperia play 2.

gaffyh5214d ago

"This means the phone will cost roughly $400.
Pretty decent for such a high-level phone. What do you think?
Also, you can be sure that the NGP will be priced higher than this."

Not necessarily, but it is a little worrying.

HappyGaming5214d ago

exactly phones are expensive...
DHD
N8
Samsung Galaxy S all of these phones cost more than that.

TheDivine5214d ago

You can get great android or w7 phones for 0.01-50 dollars. Its a nice phone but no freakin way. You get phones for free nowadays unless your an apple fan who rushes out to buy the newest model yearly. It looks great but...

SuperM5214d ago (Edited 5214d ago )

NGP is going to be cheaper then this. High end phones cost maybe 200$ to produce but are always sold for a much higher price. Sony is not going to sell NGP for anything higher then the production cost if they want to win the market. I expect 299$ for wifi only model.

Gamingbolt sucks, dont give them hits.

HolyOrangeCows5214d ago

When sold with a plan, I'm sure the price will be bearable.

SerraOfDreams5214d ago

I don't know how you can be on N4G and think there is any type of "animosity towards Sony".

ngecenk5214d ago

if you go through the website, you'll notice that 499 is with contracty. 699 without contract.

h++p://www.sonyericsson-shop. de/epages/Store.sf/de_DE/?Objec tPath=/Shops/Ignition/Products/ HAUPTPRODUKT-XPERIA-PLAY/

so yes... thats pretty dumb, sony! with wp7 goes wild n 3ds launching soon... i dont see why this is my best bet.

miyamoto5214d ago

Galaxy S is still at CAD $450 to CAD $500 without no buttons

so at $400 its a steal wait for it to be subsidized by Verizon :)

dragunrising5214d ago

I am due for an upgrade on Verizon's network and very much looked forward to getting this phone. The only problem is that you cannot sync your PSN account with the Xperia Play. You have to repurchase your PSone games if you want to play them. Thats what killed it for me. Also, people are misinformed. Sony Ericsson are responsible for this phone. Sony's game division has little to do with the Xperia Play. I was looking forward to this phone so I'm pretty disappointed. Guess I'll just have to get an NGP then...:-)

Soldierone5214d ago

Why are people so welcoming to that price tag...Its overpriced. 400 with a contract? Every Android phone on Verizon is 199, other networks are getting it down to 150. Even Droid 2 (WITH BUTTONS) cost 199, it also has the most powerful processor on the market right now.

This phone is running Android and a slightly better processor and it cost 200 dollars more? To the person that said smartphones cost 150 or more to make, you were lied to my friend.

AAACE55213d ago

@Zootang... They disagreed because you brought up the iphone to compare it with! Lots of people including myself don't like iphone!

Quit thinking there is some kind of conspiracy to hate on Sony. Most of that bullsh*t is brought on by this pointless fanboy war.

BlackTar1875213d ago

U disagree because you don't like the iphone? Really really you disagree because you don't like what he is comparing Cmon MAN .

The Iphone name is actually irrelvant its a comparison. LOL you guys sometimes.

I was look: COOL CANT WAIT!

Until i saw the source.
Gamingbolt.com -_-

DethWish5214d ago

Going by the exchange rate 499 euro is like 670 dollars

gaffyh5214d ago

Usually, the 499 euros becomes $499 with Sony e.g. PS3 Slim costs $299, and 299 euros, but £249.

arjman5214d ago (Edited 5214d ago )

I don't know why all you US gamers are compaining (sorry for the generalisation), in the UK an iPhone 4 32gb unlocked costs £600 or $960 :/

Contract iPhones usually cost £200 to buy with a
contract, so thats what $400 or something...

DAMN THIS COUNTRY AND IT'S BLOODY TAX!!!

Xperia will probably be £400-500 here aswell :/

HappyGaming5214d ago

Every country has tax... I don't think the 2.5% increase makes a big difference.

And when you consider till recently the tax in US didn't even cover medical insurance than you should wonder how UK had managed for so long.

arjman5214d ago

So 20% VAT is all cool and good? LoL

Dude we're just messing up as a country left right and centre, budget cuts everywhere, university fees doubling, public sector jobs being shut down, no exporting all imports now, literally no manufacturing we have to rely on everyone else, etc...

--------5214d ago

-
I remember when iPhone's were £350 on PAYG (whack a 30 day rolling 'contract' sim in there and you've got 300 minutes unlimited texts for £10 per month)

And now they're over £600, it should be illegal to sell a phone for that price.

arjman5214d ago (Edited 5214d ago )

Agreed, I could buy two Ps3's for the price of an iPhone 4 and still have money left over for Killzone 3...

cochise3135214d ago

I think it will be a lot cheaper if people get some sort of contract with it.

pain777pas5214d ago

This is without contract people. With a contract expect 60% off that cost.

--------5214d ago (Edited 5214d ago )

I replied to the wrong person, apologies.

Studio-YaMi5214d ago (Edited 5214d ago )

You think that's much when the Iphone costs much more than this on launch ?

Only now did the Iphone get a price cut and it's still a 300$ for the 32gig version !

http://store.apple.com/us/b...

DigitalAnalog5214d ago

Why compare them to console prices? The iPhone 4 standalone price is still horrendous it's amazing you could not walk by in life without noticing some chick/dude using one.

This is pretty cheap. Don't forget, this is a smartphone first with the extra "buttons" feature not available on other phones.

-End of Line

trancefreak5213d ago

my droid htc evo is 599 us dollars without mail in rebates and instant saving with a 2 year contract.

Im sure that is just the msrp!

Sheddi5213d ago

If it costs 400USD here in Sweden too ill buy it day one!!! But I bet that it will cost around 600-650USD here :/

Tommykrem5213d ago

Don't worry too much about the price if it sounds intimidating at first. Most people buy phones bundled with a contract, and get it cheaper.

Also the person who writes the article is wrong about the NGP price for that reason. You can expect the NGP to be cheaper, or about the same price, not more expensive. There's a whole different price setting culture on consoles than it is on cell phones, since hardware manufacturers earn more from selling complementary goods, such as games.

Christopher5213d ago

***Also, you can be sure that the NGP will be priced higher than this.***

Not necessarily. Phones are purposefully marked up by a very large margin in order to allow retailers to sell them at lower amounts in order to encourage people to sign up for 2-year agreements. Retailers only see a profit from phone sales (very small percentage of their profit) and service costs (where they make all their money).

Handhelds on the other hand require a lower entry cost so that you can make most of your money on video game sales, of which retailers see a profit from both.

SuperStrokey11235214d ago

Thats actually not a bad price considering how much other phones are.

maniac765214d ago

hahah,im not buying some single core phone now,im waitn for the dual cores, old tech omg

silvacrest5214d ago (Edited 5214d ago )

dual core will be old by Aug when quard core comes out

tech in mobile devices is moving at a staggering rate, what ever device you get will be outdated within 6 months so i wouldn't get so hung up on dual cores or specs in general

StbI9905213d ago

Does ur dual core thinGY has button?

Right...no, thank you and next

trancefreak5213d ago

And like a a Qualcomm's QSD8650 Snapdragon processor isnt fast enough on the htc evo without totally rendering battery life useless.

No doubt about it though the dual core and tech will move on but im not waiting. I waited long enough and the current smart phones are already more than what Ive could of imagined not so long ago.

a08andan5214d ago

I certainly hope that the NGP won't cost $500 or €500. That is way to high. The NGP needs to be between $250-$350 to get a good early adoption rate.

--------5214d ago

-
I know 'handheld' is the purpose of the NGP (duh) but if it's equal to or more than a PS3, you might as well just buy a console if you don't already have one.

The 5 Weirdest Sony Devices

"I talk about the 5 weirdest Sony PlayStation devices. From weird business choices, to just weird in general! What devices from Sony do you think are the weirdest? Do you agree with us?" -- PlayStation Enthusiast

LaWiiG3543d ago

I think the PSP was weird in itself. I mean the tech was cool and all with the UmD, but Sony often pushes its own media with their consoles and doesn't always find success. The memory stick duo was and is expensive as hell.

brettnll3543d ago

I agree. What a weird idea lol. Seems like they were mainly just trying to be unique.

parentsbasement3542d ago

I wouldn't call any of that "weird"....the book thing maybe...

brettnll3542d ago

It's not always the device that's the weird part. Could also be the timing (PSP Go) and the lack of marketing (PSTV). Makes you really wonder what was the point of following through with releasing these things. Xperia phone could have been something special, then Sony didn't fully support it. WHY!? lol. Just weird.

Wonderbook is weird, but that easy platinum though!

WitWolfy3542d ago

I cant get over this dudes comb over.

brettnll3542d ago

Comb over? Never heard that before lol =]

dkrusen873542d ago

I used to own a psp..first 1000 then 2000 then 3000 then after that I had a psp go and then I finally got a ps vita brand new..then lost that and the later in the year or month got a new used version of the Vita...so the journey has been really out there for me for the systems I used to own..all of them were great in there own special way..

The Top 8 Android Phones of 2013 | The Hardcore Gamer’s Guide to Android Phones

Even as the power of mobile devices is outpacing Moore’s Law, and graphics power seems to double every year, it’s a sad fact that phones simply aren’t marketed toward gamers. Walk into a phone store and ask a rep about a phone’s CPU. If you’re lucky, they might tell you how many cores it has, but getting a real idea about a phone’s performance is going to require some independent research. Even then, not everything is equal. Chips grouped under the same family are sometimes radically different on the inside, and even a savvy shopper might be surprised to find his phone comes up short. We’re here to cut through the nonsense and give you some straight talk about which phones are best when games matter most.

For anyone using iOS, I suggest you try the stock android experience offered with the nexus 4. I used to prefer iOS but android has more customization and very recently competitive build quality.
