Will Crytek Quit PC Development?

Will Crytek decide enough is enough and fully abandon PC development?

Excerpt: "Crytek has already been burned on piracy, and they’re being burned again. If Crysis 2 is the blockbuster it’s expected to be on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Crytek might decide it’s simply financially unsound to develop games on PC like many others like Playdead (Limbo) have."

the first Crysis, was leaked and still sold millions.so why would they quit?everyone just praying on the doom of PC gaming now days.

JonahFalcon5242d ago

Millions?

The game sold 90K in the first two weeks, and took years to even reach 1M. Crytek abandoned PC exclusivity because of it.

NYC_Gamer5242d ago (Edited 5242d ago )

Crysis has sold 3 million+ copies...and the expansion sold 1.5.

Edit:
the game sold 1 million retail before the price cuts...but lets all ignore that...so 1 million is nothing now?

Crytek's first person shooter game, Crysis, has been reported for selling over 1 million copies in less than three month during the Electronic Arts third quarter earnings conference call yesterday. Even though the game has gone platinum, CEO John Riccitiello said that EA is "not satisfied" with the overall third quarter financial results. The company was disappointed that none of the big successes were developed internally. "We did not have any internally developed breakaway titles," said Riccitiello. "The closest thing we had to breakaway titles in 2007 were Skate and FIFA," he continued. Riccitiello expects Burnout Paradise to be another big hit, but he didn't give any more indications than that at this early stage in the game's shelf

i thought it sold nothing in its first year?

JonahFalcon5242d ago (Edited 5242d ago )

AFTER IT WAS REDUCED TO $19.99.

In its first year of sales, it sold NOTHING.

http://www.joystiq.com/2007...

Of COURSE it sold after it was slashed in price by 1/3.

"It sold a ton for the 2 years after it was slashed to $20!"

No shit, Sherlock.

(face palm)

Crytek didn't quit PC exclusivity because they hated PC development.

Charmers5242d ago (Edited 5242d ago )

@ JonahFalcon - that 90,000 figure was a load of rubbish. The figures are from NPD which is the US ONLY. So in ONE territory Crysis sold 90,000 in the first week. Not only that but the US is actually the weakest territory for the PC. It would be like you looking at xbox 360 game sales in Japan and coming to the conclusion that represents the "world",

Crysis did damn fine sales wise with 3 million sold and a further 1.5 million copies of Warhead sold as well.

The reason Crytek quit PC exclusivity is because they can. There is nothing to stop any developer from dropping PC exclusivity, there is no PC platform holder willing to pay for exclusivity like Sony and Microsoft are.

If you look at most exclusives on the consoles you will find they are either exclusive because the console maker stumped up a crap load of cash or the console maker stumped up a crap load of cash and bought the developer. That kind of thing does not happen on the PC therefore PC developers are free to do what they want.

NYC_Gamer5242d ago (Edited 5242d ago )

@Charmers

that dude is just another bandwagon journalist.who types out his ass about PC gaming which he knows nothing about...i already proved him to be wrong about Crysis, selling nothing in its first year.everything he writes is anti PS3/PC.

FantasyStar5242d ago

1. You were proven wrong by Charmers
2. Ever stop to think people didn't buy it cause their hardware couldn't handle it?

I just want this game to sell like crazy on pc!!

off topic:
Batman: Arkham Asylum Game of the Year Edition
$7.50 on steam!! :) A new deal everyday all week long!!

RedDead5242d ago

Chance's are the console versions will get leaked too. As usual.

JonahFalcon5242d ago (Edited 5242d ago )

Yes, but in order to run a pirated game on a console, you have to mod the console first. And with the 360 (and now the PS3), your modded console will get banned from online play.

PC piracy? Install and go. No fuss, no muss. Why bother getting out a soldering gun to wreck your console when you can just download and play?

Again, Crytek ALREADY decided to quit making just for PC because of piracy.

zslash5242d ago (Edited 5242d ago )

Erm, the hacks for this generation of consoles are ALL software based. PC piracy is not install and go : you need to apply a crack usually, which is just about as difficult as enabling piracy on a 360/PS3.

plb5242d ago

@zslash a crack takes about 2 seconds to apply =\

zslash5242d ago (Edited 5242d ago )

I know, but that was in reference to JonahFalcon's comment -- he makes console piracy sound insanely complex. It's not.

With the PS3 you just download a modified firmware, place it on your USB device of choice and install via the storage option in Network Update... bam your console is piracy enabled. It's not any more difficult than installing an OFW, which is unfortunate for Sony.

Pandamobile5242d ago

Crytek quit developing PC exclusive games for two reasons:

1. They want to sell their engine. You're not going to sell a whole lot of licenses if your engine only works on one platform.

2. They want to sell more games. Why sell 3 million when you can sell 6-8 million?

Letros5242d ago (Edited 5242d ago )

Did the author really just compare Crytek with Playdead?

The number of speculation articles coming out from this unfinished beta leak is laughable.

plb5242d ago (Edited 5242d ago )

Abandon? Doubtful though I do suspect they will focus more attention on consoles but not because of piracy but because their is more money in them than PC games. I used to be exclusive PC gamer years ago and so did many people I know but these days most people I know game on console. I only know 2 others that game on PC and they play CS every now and again. PC gaming is not what it once was. I purchased Black Ops on PC a while back because the PS3 version was so screwed and there is barely anyone who plays it and it is the 2nd most popular game on Steam. When I played Blops on PS3 it had over 800,000 people online playing. PC has like 20-30,000. Another example is Rockstar. They don't release games on PC till like a year later because they know they will be pirated like crazy.

LMS5242d ago (Edited 5242d ago )

all that matters to me is crysis 2 on pc DESTROYS everything you will ever see on this gen of consoles,

killzone 3....keep freaking dreaming

uncharted 2 and 3.....WRONG!!

nothing will ever come out on ps3 that looks even close to crysis 2 on pc, crysis 1 on pc, metro2033 on pc, dirt2 on pc, hell 50% of AAA pc gamesreleased in the last 3 years own 99% of all console games...

have fun playing in dirty ass 1996 720p for the next 4 years,.....lol...gross

TABSF5242d ago

Yep

Killzone 3 only comes close to Crysis at medium with lighting and depth of field on high.

Now with Crysis 2 I would say at low on PC it will look equally if not better than Killzone 3.

Playing it right now looks amazing! :D
so much fun, i hope they make a vr mod for crysis 2 / 3 too!

DivineHand125147d ago

This is amazing. This is the direction VR should go in to boost adoption. Since I have beaten every Crysis except 1, this is now a good excuse to correct that problem.

Crytek Wanted Crysis To Be "Future-Proof"

According to Crytek CEO Cervat Yerli, "I want[ed] to make sure Crysis does not age, that [it] is future proofed, meaning that if I played it three years from now, it should look better than today." Yerli and the team designed Crysis' highest graphical settings for the PC hardware of 2010 and beyond.

While Crytek has officially announced Crysis 4 is in development, nothing new has surfaced. For now, gamers' only way to scratch that itch is to play the Crysis Remastered Trilogy available on PC and consoles.

OG 2007 Crysis (not the remastered weirdo), is & will forever be a legend amongst the PC community.

PrinceOfAnger152d ago

This video will always be impressive to me, even for years to come. Some things here are better than games we have today, OG crysis is the best version!

RaidenBlack152d ago

OG Crysis physics, man ... amazing! Thanks for the reminder!

PrinceOfAnger151d ago (Edited 151d ago )

Looks really nice with VR mod too

FinalFantasyFanatic152d ago

I'm still shocked that it looks as good as it does today, puts some modern games to shame.

Profchaos151d ago

I thought the remaster was fine tbh some rough edges at launch but after some patches it's decent

isarai152d ago

I mean the lighting and physics still hold up extremely well. I still revisit it from time to time.

RedDeadLB152d ago

That CPU performance thing is preventing it.

isarai151d ago

Yeah unfortunately Crystek's decision to bet on the linear progression of clock speed in CPUs was derailed by the unforseen shift towards multicore CPUs. It just wasn't built with that in mind because that wasn't even in the conversation at the moment

DivineHand125151d ago

I remember when I tried to play Crysis with my Intel Pentium Dual core E2200 @2.2GHz , 4GB ram and GeForce 9400gt. I was a kid back then and that was the best I could do. I would get about 15 to 20 fps. When I over clocked the CPU to 2.8GHz I would get about 40fps. The experience wasn't good at all and it was the only PC game I could not run back then unless and put the settings on low. At that point the game went from cutting edge graphics to PS2 graphics. To this day I haven't completed the OG Crysis. I was able to complete Crysis 2 and 3 after building a new PC when I got my first job.

HyperMoused151d ago

Never played it, worth a try you think?

Profchaos151d ago (Edited 151d ago )

Worth a try just because it's the only game that lets you pick up a turtle on the beach and throw it at enemy soldiers that should have been a back of the box feature.

But nah seriously unless you're nostalgic for it I'm not sure if it will hold up
