Ultimately, Marvel vs. Capcom 3's appeal will depend on your own disposition. Far more welcoming to button-mashers than Street Fighter IV, this is a game in which you can tap stuff and watch sparkly miracles happen. But to begin to understand and master its systems will take just as much practice as it did in Ono's game – and quicker reactions to boot.
For a game conceived in the bed of fan service, Marvel vs. Capcom 3 arguably does too little for fans of its various mythologies outside of the characters themselves. There are precious few unlockables here.
But perhaps that reveals Niitsuma's focus : to make a game that can rival his own rival's, one that discards frippery in favour of density. In that regard, Capcom has a Hulk smash on its hands – at least, for those able to keep up with its tune.
Artist Chris Cayco, who we’ve featured a few times before on Kotaku, grew up playing Marvel vs. Capcom (and Marvel vs. Street Fighter) games. His tribute to this, which took him over 175 hours, was to combine every single character to ever appear in Capcom’s crossover series in the one enormous image.
Makes me despise Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite that much more
So much wasted potential
As common as it is today, it is hard to believe that there was a time where gaming franchises crossing over was just a pipe dream. Capcom broke down the wall, but they took the combination of some of the most unlikely of franchises and made it the norm.
Whether it was a colossal successful partnership with Marvel Comics or a collaboration with rivals Namco and SNK, the “Vs.” series brought unforgettable experiences to the fighting genre.
Marvel doesn't just have a bright future ahead of it in films, but in the gaming realm as well. Some exciting new titles are showing up on all hardware, so does that mean gamers are finally catching up with the MCU?
Always preferred Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter to this but 8/10 is still good score.
The snippet here seems they enjoyed the game, but know it won't be everyone's cup of tea. Seems they were also hoping for more features that are becoming staples in other fighters like replay channels and the ability to spectate matches while you wait for your turn in a friends lobby.
I'm excited to get my hands on with it Tuesday. DAT MAHVEL! :D
Frippery???
Gonna get this since I love all fighting games with Soul Calibur, Street Fighter IV, Tekken and Mortal Kombat! I love the rooster they have in this lovely game!
Hope we Europeans get it on friday!
I'm certainly gonna give this a try, but there are lots of things I don't like about it. Would have preferred they stuck with high-res sprites like BlazBlue. The roster is pretty lackluster as well. Half the size as MvC2 with just as much of what I'd consider "filler" characters.
