CVG: Shift 2: Unleashed - The Best Sim Racer Yet?

A simulation racing series by trade, NFS Shift is jostling for the same stretch of tarmac as technically-minded driving games Forza 3 and Gran Turismo 5 - that's a pair of daunting pacesetters right there.

But although Shift 2: Unleashed can't compete with its more illustrious rivals in terms of number-crunching, it has one thing that they lack: impact.

Sim? Don't make me laugh.

BrianG5250d ago

The whole time I was thinking, really? A simulator? When did that happen?

I just played shift yesterday and what I played was far from a sim. GT5 and Forza have that category locked up.

CVG: The best gamming site yet?

...lol

TBM5250d ago

I'm gonna have to go with no cvg lol

NFS Shift was about as arcadey as it got, particularly the massive amounts of oversteer on just about every car, power sliding around corners was about as realistic as burnout paradise.

I'd love to see Shift 2 turn out to be a real sim though, doesn't have to be seriously hardcore like rfactor or whatever, but have the fundamental basis of a sim there similar to Forza or GT. But then again it was pretty obvious the devs behind the first Shift were focused more on the feeling of the racing, hence the ridiculous motion blur and screen going monotone at high speeds, and I'd be surprised if Shift 2 was any different.

If they don't want to go the sim route, just get rid of the stupid oversteer and you'll have yourself an enjoyable racer, just don't market it as a sim.

"NFS Shift was about as arcadey as it got"

That's a rather gross exaggeration. I've been a big racing game fan for the last decade, enjoying just everything from pure arcade racer like Burnout, FlatOut and the new NFS Hot Pursuit, to PC sim racers (played with wheels and pedals of course, a Logitech G25 for the last four years) like GTR1+2, rFactor, LFS, netKar Pro and iRacing.

NFS Shift (I played the PS3 version with my G25) was a severely flawed and very uneven game, with some cars feeling pretty terrible and not behaving at all like you would expect, but others - including several of my favourite cars (the Zonda F and the McLaren F1 spring to mind) - definitely delivered a "semi-sim" feel that wasn't far at all behind GT and Forza in my opinion.
I don't expect Shift 2 to be a full blown sim either, but if it can take the best handling cars from Shift 1, improve upon them further and then make sure all the cars are up to the same standards, I'm sure I'll love it.

Edito5249d ago

For me they already ruined Shift 2 with that Sim Marketing...

MNicholas5250d ago

but Forza 3 certainly is not a "scientific sim" by any stretch of the imagination. Even the developers of Shift 2 laughed off Forza 3 while speaking with reverence in regards to GT5.

From what I understand, rather than try to go the scientific route a la GT5 with it's pristine physics simulation, Shift 2 devs are focusing more on capturing the atmosphere and excitement of the race day as well as the physical sensation of driving a race car with all the shaking and noise that goes with it.

geodood5250d ago

That's because of the permanent driving assists in Forza 3. It is an arcade game - not a simulator.

Shift 2: Unleashed a Sim rly!? never knew that >_>

ChristianGamer5250d ago

Since you've never played it, I'm not suprised you never knew that.
Let me guess, the best is always going to be a game made by Sony? Why? Because the fans always buy it? Then I guess CoD really is the best fps after all. And justin bieber is teh awesomest

dragonyght5250d ago (Edited 5250d ago )

in the shift dev word it is arcade-with-sim-aspects racer and they were aiming 4 fotza and gt5 quality. my comment was directed toward the article claim

"Let me guess, the best is always going to be a game made by Sony?"
i fail to see what sony got do with a misinformed article

"Then I guess CoD really is the best fps after all"
MW was in my opinion a lots better shooter had came out since than

"justin bieber is teh awesomest"
who dah hell is that

TBM5250d ago

Hey CG I had shift 1 and although it was decent it was nowhere near a sim, it was a nice try by the developer but part 2 wont come any closer.

Kon5250d ago

You must be high man

Darkfiber5250d ago

Anyone else sick of these article titles that always end in a question mark? They make serious claims but escape all accountability simply by adding a question mark, so they can say that they were asking a question to their audience rather than making a statement.

If you truly believe that it's the best sim racer yet, grow some balls and stand behind your belief. It is, after all, an opinion piece.

Quagmire5250d ago

Lol..the irony of the first line in your comment.

Darkfiber5250d ago

At least I said anyone ELSE, implying that I was as well :P

If I hadn't and people said no, then I could have just said "yup, me neither, just wondering" like these article authors always do...

aviator1895250d ago

Well, since I haven't played it myself, I don't know what to think, but it's probably just CVG trying to get hits with even more absurd articles.

DJMarty5250d ago

They said that with the first NFS:Shift, and that didn't cut it.

Believe it when I see it.

I'm not impressed with much in terms of racing this gen. Graphics have been really raised racently, and it wasn't by the "two kings" (GT and Forza) in racing. Shift 2 and the upcoming Project Cars are now DOMINATING racing games graphically, GT5 and Forza 4/H do not even compare. But physics and gameplay-wise, most everything's been "off" aside from a select few. My short list would be.

#1 GT5. It's still rocking everybody in terms of gameplay and variety. It's got every kind of 4 wheeled racing almost from Karts to F1 and everything in between. GT needs to step it up graphically now though. Forza is the LEAST of their worries there.

#2 Motorstorm Pacific Rift. Just the #1 most fun and intense arcade/off-road racer ever made or ever will be made. SOOOOOO much variety compared to the bare bones (but great) first game, and a way better racing game than the 3rd game which was more like Split-Second than MotorStorm in THIS Motorstorm Fan's opinion.

#3 F1 Championship Edition. This PS3 exclusive launch game is imho still the best F1 game this gen in terms of the racing.

#4 FerrariChallenge/SuperCar Challenge. Alot of people havn't heard about these, they got VERY little attention. They sucked because not alot of cars, but it's a fact that System 3 put into these PS3 exclusives (they were on Wii too, but they weren't as advanced) the most advanced, realistic physics to ever be in a console racer. The same physics they put into their PC sim. Good graphics for the time too. Very under-rated.

#5 Shift 2. This is only here because I think graphically, it's a sneak peek at the next level in racing sim graphics. Project Cars is improving on that. But Shift 2 has HORRIBLE physics and I disliked playing it. If Project Cars can get the physics more in line than Shift 2, and have enough of a garage to have the variety in the racing while keeping the online field fairly even like GT5 does, it will truly be the next level of racing sims, and something may actually pull me away from GT5, which nothing has based on gameplay.

Also: WipeOut HD- awesome game, awesome value, it's expansion makes it an even better value, top notch quality.
