Why console game makers can’t rely on digital sales — yet

While a number of large-scale publishers like EA are betting on our social gaming future, speakers at the GameON Finance conference in Toronto say the new spaces are still shaky in terms of revenue. Digital distribution, mobile gaming and social networking are changing the way publishers can sell games these days, allowing developers to go directly to consumers.

“There is more disruption coming with mobile, social, streaming games and connected TV,” said Piers Harding-Rolls, senior analyst and head of games at the market research firm Screen Digest of London.
