PS3 and Wii sales drop significantly as Xbox 360 hardware sales explode

The new charts have been updated on VGChartz for the week of September 9 - September 15. Hardware sales are showing some very interesting things as Wii hardware figures drop 20% to well over 90k and Playstation 3 even drops an amazing 40% to just over 30k. This compared to Xbox 360 figures which increase by almost 20% selling nearly 90k, almost as much as the Wii.

Heavenly Sword did not impress in first week sales, with not even 80k copies. Bioshock and Metroid Prime still doing amazing with another 90k and 70k this week respectively. EA's SKATE debuted this week with just over 50k as the NHL 08 and NHL 2K8 games fail to impress. Full numbers after the jump

I know some hardcore Halo fans who play *only* Halo and nothing else... and they still have not gotten their Xbox 360 yet.

At the same time, there a guy who played BioShock at my house and had just gotten his own Xbox 360. (Although I told him not to buy one and that he could just come over to my place and play through the whole game... because people should not buy a console for just one game.)

Look at the current third / fourth gen games like Halo3 and Ninja Gaiden 2, and you can see that the xbox360 has maxed out graphically. They look pretty similar or even worse than first gen titles from the PS3 such as Motorstorm and Ninja Gaiden Sigma that's a remake port made by a branched off bunch of unimportant kids inexeperienced with the PS3. With an important title like Halo3, you'd think Microsoft would make a giant graphicall leap. But they couldn't.

Grand Turimso 5 is only the beginning for the PS3, and you can tell that no xbox360 game ever will graphically compare. It'll only get better and better, wheras the XBOX360 has had two to three years already and there has been no sign of a graphical breakthrough at all. Grand Turismo 5 is a graphical breakthrough as Motostorm. I'd argue that the xbox360 cannot do Motostorm with all it's dust and mud and particle effects and lighting and physics.

xbox360 is a 60mph car. PS3 is a 200-600 mph Lamborghinni beast. Microsoft plays dirty and changes laws and rules so that all cars faster than it must run at near 60mph so that it would be "fair" to them. They also place sneaky roadblocks and other dirty tricks along the way. But that is bad for ALL gamers. Because graphics will be capped off at 60mph instead of 600mph for this gen unless the PS3 finds a way to counter the bad people...

All gamers suffer because of the xbox360 because all graphics are being capped off at 60mph when it should be 600mph or more this generation. We'll have to wait and see if the PS3 can outmanuever the unethical practices of their competition. You only resort to dirty tricks if you feel you cannot win fair and square.

It's like the xbox360 B-student arranging with the teacher so that all students cannot earn higher than a B grade. I say let the A students earn their A's and stop interfering...!!!

I do not believe that this gen should be capped off at 60mph with the xbox360. ALL GAMERS SHOULD REBEL AGAINST THIS, EVEN THE XBOTS.

As for PS3 sales dropping; well, what else would you expect after all the publicity the upcoming $399 PS3 is getting? With no must-have games out there, an imminent $200 price cut is, of course, going to dry up sales.
Don't blame Halo; blame Ars Technica and Pachter.
Halo is not going to have any effect whatsoever on PS3 sales; anybody who would want to buy the PS3 as it exists would do it whether Halo existed or not.
In other words; it is up to Sony whether PS3 sells or not, not Microsoft.

I agree with you. The price is just the problem. I am not sure how much impact the $399 rumor has. There is just so much talk on the net, but does it reach the people (the majority?) outside, too ? It wasn't published in any mainstream media.

But, true, I was pretty disappointed with Sony's TGS performance, they showed good games, and a nice number of 'em as well, but nothing earth shaking (except the rumbling SixAxis). Where was the price drop ?

It could well be, that Sony is not ready for the $399 yet. Especially because of Halo. I mean, they can only loose anyway. Its just a question how much. Loosing with a $399 price tag might hurt much more then with $499/$599. Or they think the library is not big enough for a PS3 only machine without PS2 mode (which I'd guess it will be).

Could also well be, that Sony gets pressure from other Blue Ray partners. If they are not able to sell any significant number of BD players, they might pressure Sony to not introduce yet another low price player (a $399 PS3 would be the killer player - but also nothing to earn for anybody else). That's just a thought, but maybe that has some impact, too.

True, in the light of Halo3, a 360 price drop and a still ongoing PS3 games drought it is not surprising that the numbers go down. I would have hoped - and maybe that's really because of the $399 rumor - because of HS, the numbers would have stayed stable. Seems I was hoping to much.

I think the HS comments are a bit harsh. It is still #3 selling (and even tops BioShock in week 4 - the million seller, isn't it?). So, I wouldn't say its that bad. Dirt also reached a high first week with ~30k - without that big media focus HS got. The list is increasingly filling with PS3 titles. It will take time.

The 360 performance is very good though, SW and HW, no doubt about it. Wii seems to slowly find its way back to earth. I am wondering if it will stop at some level or if the hype is really flattening. I'd guess the 360 will earn the #1 back pretty soon.

PS3 time is not ready, yet. Hope Sony's doing the right thing and plan their "re-launch" accordingly - because that's what's needed.

You have to know that if anything 360 is kicking some major ass the price drop proved too strong and Halo 3 is helping in a major way only to pass the torch to the other huge titles that won't stop comming untill some where in the middle of next year. It's a decent look. It's not 100% accurate, though neither is the NPD numbers (NPD can be assumed to be more accurate, but still not 100%).

This is about the spike I expected from Halo, but it looks like it may pass the Wii when it actually hits, which I didn't expect.

We'll have to see how it goes from here on out, even if we're only see a rough estimate from vgchartz.

It's a good thing for competition, but thinking the PS3 is dead in the US is far from the truth.. The PS3 is in transition now, with only the 80 gig model on store shelves.. I can't find a single 60 gig anywhere.. With most people waiting on the heavily rumored price cut, and no 60 gig models in site, of course sales will slow..

Lest we forget that worldwide sales show that the PS3 will catch up to the 360 by the end of 08..

God of war II did over 700,000 the first week. Nariko was supposed to sell like that? Heavenly Sword is not Final Fantasy you know. Sony's publisher totals (first party) are higher than Microsoft (over 200k verses 50k). Nintendo has the highest publisher totals. The wii fell? Of course next week Halo 3 will push Microsofts publisher sales to 2+ million. Halo 3 is being released next week, do you think the hardware sales woud be down? Blue Dragon (Microsoft first party is selling less than Lair and Warhawk.)I guess that's a flop, it had just as much hype as Heavenly Sword and Lair. Bioshock belongs to take-two. I'm still shocked that ppl aren't attributing the spike to Halo 3. We're all video game fiends but you have to realize how big Halo is/has become. BioShock really moved consoles. I mean, WOW! I dunno if Halo 3 will do as much though. But VgChartz is alot more accurate than Sony or Microsoft's PR. Even if they make mistakes they will fix them, their tracking of hardware and software is pretty damn accurate.

Look at the game sales. The proof is right there. 3 Sony 1st party games games hyped in the past month. 3 Sony 1st party games selling like crap. Look at Motorstorm which was the holy grail of Sony Sausage Smugglers. Its barely over 400,000 is sales in the US. Thats only because it is bundled with every 80GB PS3 now. Otherwise it would be alot closer to 300,000. PS3 owners dont buy games. They buy Blu-Ray movies. Blame Sony. For hyping up Blu-Ray, including it in the cost of the PS3, and thus alienating a huge chunk of its fanbase. The Wii console that is less than half the cost of the PS3 with last gneration graphics is absolutely destroying it in Worldwide sales. The 360 which is made my an American Corporation is considerably cheaper, performs on par with the PS3 if not better, suffers from a horrible reputation for faulty hardware, and doesnt even sell in Japan, yet somehow manages to outsell the PS3 in the US and EU.

For all the 360's faults that you Playstation Polesmokers seem to keep bringing up. Red Rings of Death, Disc Scratching, DVD-9 instead of Blu-Ray, Xbox Live Gold costs $50.00 a year, rumble is last generation technology, 360 has no HDMI, or its only HDMI 1.2, The Cell blows away the 360, it doesnt sell in Japan, etc...

Guess what? The 360 sells hardware. Guess What? The 360 owners buy games. Guess What? 3rd party developers have taken notice. Guess What? 3rd parties are making the 360 the lead development platform. All of the advantages the PS2 had last generation are now all avantages the 360 has.

Now if Sony were to introduce a $400.00 PS3 it would make things more interesting. But then again Microsoft can match or beat any price drop. Not to mention the average consumer doents even buy a console till its under $200.00

Sony is in trouble. I like my PS3 but its not worth what my wife paid for it. As a hardcore gamer $400.00 would have been worth it. Thats what I paid for my 360, and what my brother once paid for a Sega Saturn at launch. I still think the best strategy is to have both HD videogame consoles. But to all you Sony worshipping sheep, pull you head out of Ken Kutaragi's A$$ for 5 minutes and get a 360, its worth the price, it has great games, and the online is second to none. To the 360 owners who dont have a PS3. Your not missing much. Warhawk is the only game I own. Its fun, but doesnt justify $600.00. Once you have tried Live you wont want PSN. Trust me. Blu-Ray movies look nice though. I think the best strategy is to wait for the PS3 to get games that actually live up to Sony's hype and have replay value. Wait for the PS3 to drop to $399.00 or lower. Here in the US the PS3 wont have home or forcefeedback in its controllers till Spring of 2008. That should hopefully be a good time to get a PS3 if your wanting to play videogames, by then a few more 1st party games will be out and I might be able to justify telling my friends to go buy a PS3. For now they all come over and see what they are missing, or in most cases not missing.

The torch is being passed from Boishock to Halo 3 on top of the price cut. We havn't seen the true effect of Halo 3 yet many will buy the console durring and after the launch on top of the Halo sparked Holliday shopping craz this is just a taste of whats to come, people buy consoles for Christmas and good games spark the choice making. Motorstorm in AMERICA had only sold 340k copies (before bundle with 80gb) Since March when it debuted at 194k first month, then the rest next 6 months only selling 146k in America? Between Jin, DJ, and Madden Raiders....they have put their foots in their mouths many a times since I have been apart of this site. Then when you say something about it they attack you personally and bash you with irelevant comments and offensive language. I stopped doing that because their childish rants aren't worth it.

I won all three and I'm very happy with my PS3 (much more than my wii for sure) The PS3 will have its "heyday" (in the US) soon.. It's just not right now.

I really don't know why people get so attached to sales numbers anyway.. Different systems sell well in different territories.. How do you think the developers feel who dump millions of dollars into a game thats exclusive to the Ps3....Yet it sells horribly every week. With only 2 games reaching 1 million sold out of the whole ps3 library of games. Think about how they feel.

Keep in mind that the xbox 360 had 3 games sell over a million 2 months after launch. If your game is decent...as a developer....you have a good chance of your game selling over 1 million copies on the xbox 360. Nearly 95% of the games released on Xbox 360 that say "1080p" on the box actually don't render natively at that resolution. Every PS3 title that says "1080p resolution" though IS natively rendered at that resolution. The ANA chip in 360 simply upscales 720p frames on the 360 to 1080p (i.e. stretches out to 2.5x the original resolution). Get your facts straight. ^_~

It doesn't matter what the reason is. (just keep telling yourself that) Companies have long term goals to make products productive and profitable. Sony decided on adding Blue ray and using Cell which is different to optimize and thus is paying the consequences for higher prices and longer dev time. But didnt the WII also shipped 1 year later and look how well it is doing. The fact of the matter is what MS and NIN are selling well in America and Sony isn't. To make BUT, BUT BUT excuses doesn't take away from the real numbers which NPD gave of last August that Xbox from July to August went up 100k from 170k to 276k. While PS3 dropped 29k from 159k to 130k. Having the PS3 selling at 130 or under every month isn't good for the industry. And thats the bottom line.

Well done Microsoft, but it was to be expected. Price drop, Bioshock and Halo 3 have all helped bump up the sales.

But to write off the PS3? If you look at the big games for Sony, yes they are for next year and you may argue some may go multi-format, but:

Final Fantasy: 8-10 million.

Metal Gear Solid: 6-8 million.

Gran Turismo: 6-8 million.

The thing to remember is the 360 year one did not have that many amazing titles, yes some good ones, but only Gear Of War sticks out.

Right now I play The Darkness, Ninja Gaiden Sigma and Stardust HD, later today I get Warhawk. All within the first year and look forward to Drake's Fortune, Haze and UT 3 before the end of the year.

There are good games coming out on all 3 systems and sales will vary depending upon what is out, but like I said at the beginning well done Microsoft.

In my experience (n' I've been with it (Halo) since day 1), I've known the series to generate tons of revenue, not particularly move consoles themselves. Again, I'm just speaking what I've seen n' experienced n' know first hand. Both titles (1 n' 2) were just THE game to have if you owned M$'s system. If you had an Xbox, 9.9 times outta 10 you had Halo.

Obviously this spike in sales is due directly to the impending release of Halo 3. For the 360 console sales to almost reach those of Nintendo's console...I don't think anyone could have predicted that, much less days before the game was actually released.

Keep in mind....I'm a gamer, I don't work for either of these companies. If I did, my talk would be much like many of yours. I believe the PS2 was one of the greatest systems created to date. I own a 360 because I can't afford all 3 n' made what choice I felt was best. Things were much easier a couple years back, when I could actually afford to game on and support both systems....

Obviously a lot of people with PS2's are buying 360's when they upgrade. The numbers don't lie.

Killer titles like Bioshock, Ace Combat 6 and Halo 3 are what sells consoles. The informed buyer also knows that the multi-platform games are usually better on the 360 (Madden, R6V etc, etc).

On top of all this the 65 micron chipset should appear before Christmas - after Bioshock and Halo 3 deplete the supply of old RROD 360's without even a closeout sale! This chipset will be A LOT cheaper to produce, so they can easily more than match any Sony price cuts.

I’m sorry sonyfanbots, but the truth is that HS is not in the same league as BioShock or Gears. I played a demo at Best Buy. It’s the same game as Kameo but doesn’t look as good with the game play. What is up with the character’s square fingers in the cut scenes? Even my wife was laughing. Honestly I was going to buy a PS3 just for HS but then I played it, it scks. Sorry I will not be dumping any money into Sony this year. I have a 360 and a Wii for the kids. Sony needs a hit.

i feel for everyone that got sucked into buying a ps3. I'll have one someday but it'll have to be cheaper and have at least 2 games that are must haves. My 360 just broke for the 1st time and I love it so much that i'm not even bothered by it. It's like a pet that you love, except it pisses on the carpet, you cant do without it, even though it's not quite right. Great days ahead for games. Quit hating on the box playstation fans and just go buy one. Maybe you'll all stop being such bitter a holes if you have some fun games to play.

As a retailer, you see Gamers of all Types. The most common for me are die hard Nintendo fans. When you talk to Nintendo Fanboys, they can usually tell you why they are fanboys and why they love Nintendo. An there's a lot of good reasons too like Nintendo that I need not get into.

I myself wasn't a fan of the original Xbox. It was Microsoft's first stab at the video game market and there wasn't really much for me but most players that were fans of the original Xbox were fans of Halo. And for those fans, it was a good enough reason.

The Playstation 2 was one of the Greatest Consoles in gaming History. Although it was the weakest of the 3 console hardwares, it had an unbeatable Library of games beyond that seen in any other generation.

However it's a new generation and things are different. With the Playstation 3, Sony no longer has what they had with Playstation 2. When I ask Playstation 3 FanBoys why it is they love and are so dedicated to Sony, most can't answer or they give answers that have no foundation or basis. If you've heard some of the crap I've heard, you too might conclude too that Playstation3 fanboys are miss-informed and refuse to believe facts.

What is the difference between what Microsoft is doing and what Sony's doing? Whether the Playstation 3 is a more powerful system than the Xbox 360 is neither hear nor there. The beauty of a video game is now based on the budget and development time put behind a game. I have no problem with Microsoft buying great development teams, giving them a ton of money and telling them to make the Xbox 360 a great game. Microsoft is very independent.

As with Sony, they are still very dependent on 3rd parties to put out games that will sell their system. None of the big title that everyone's (Sony Fans) looking forward to belong to Sony. Metal Gear is Konami's and Final Fantasy is Square Enix. Nintendo fans and Xbox fans will use 1st party games as a battle cry. Playstation 3 fans use 3rd party games as a battle cry. My only request is to have a good reason why you're a fan and you're opinion will be respected.

the 360 has a larger base of games, it also has LIVE online for all games so games have a tendency to hjave a longer lifespan, cod2 was played online for many many months, gears was played ofr 6 months heavily, and theres over 30 quality games and many good arcade games, also halo3 is coming and tons of games for this holiday such as cod4,AC, and many others. the news of ea games being better on the 360 and other things like that help the 360. So it is not a surprise that the 360 is doing better but sony has a tendency of coming in strong after a year has past.

The 360 is doing well and the hardware problems are going away but its not selling that great, its doing well. In 2 years the ps3 will have a onslaught of games and will have more features that mimick the unified service if live and with a much cheaper os3 the ps2 owners might by a ps3 becuase of brand loyalty, so while the ps3 isnt doing great now and the games stink that could all change next year.
