The Friday Game: Block Rogue

Chris Donlan finds creativity blooming even in the darkest dungeon of Buzz Monkey’s latest.

Dungeon crawlers are synonymous with brutality. Block Rogue, however - which takes out the loot, the monsters and the endless levelling and stuffs puzzles back in their place – is a decidedly sweet experience. It’s sweetness that shines through the quirky scraps of story and piecemeal encouragement you receive as you travel from one room to the next tackling the randomised challenges, and it’s sweetness that you glimpse in the pudgy, early Schulz-influenced face of Ilbin, the game’s football-headed hero, who’s determined to pick his way through the catacombs.
