DC Universe Online: $50 million gamble aims for audience that World of Warcraft ‘can’t touch’

In creating an online video game based on Superman and the others in the DC Comics pantheon, it was no problem giving the characters the power to stop a locomotive or leap tall buildings in a single bound. They just couldn’t run faster than a speeding bullet.

Sony + Superheroes = win.
Spider-man 2 movie and inFAMOUS are my past references here.
They are taking a gamble with the mmo genre and I wish them well

FrankMcSpank2836d ago

You know it would be pretty nifty if Cole made an appearance in DCU in some DLC down the road. Maybe a set of missions that could allow you some sort of elctrical abilities or something.

FailOverHero2836d ago

Now that is a pretty sweet idea. Hope Sony takes up that idea. Does this game ship with one month free like most MMO's? The possibilites of this game just got me excited

evrfighter2836d ago

dlc and an mmo?

wow you like it from behind don't you. you can expect expansion packs down the road but those are hardly DLC as you can buy them retail.

FrankMcSpank2836d ago

@evrfighter,

I don't think you understand. I don't mean payed DLC, I mean DLC in general. They said the game will be updaded constantly. Your $15 will be worth it according to SOE, so I want stuff like this. FREE..I should of put that in there.

thats_just_prime2836d ago

$ony doesnt know how to run a a mmo. So it the end DCUO could be the greatest mmo of all time but it will fail thanks to $ony. EQ was a much better mmo then wow and $ony ruined it. $ony been trying to make/buy a successful mmo for 12 years and it ruined all of them

soljah2836d ago

i was playing the beta with my son, asked him what does dcuo remind u of. right off he said infamous and the first crackdown. i agree lots of fun. its like the aaa action games i am used to playing on consoles with a rpg feel to it

Baka-akaB2836d ago

@thats_just_prime

Most of the clowns that ruined SoE mmos are long gone .

For starters the main culprit behind the corruption of SW galaxies went off to be CEO of Cryptic . And it showed in the way they handled champions and Star trek

Spiderman 2 was only distributed by Columbia Pictures (Sony subsidiary) and Infamous was only published by SCE.

DC Universe Online unless it's free to play, will flop just like APB at least on PC anyway.

edit:

Looks like DCUO will have a $14.99 a month subscription on both Windows and PS3.

FailOverHero2836d ago (Edited 2836d ago )

Bro, even CG, a microsoft fanboy is giving Sony props for taking a chance on this game, why must you come here and spread negativity? I'm no sony fan myself but I do not have a single bad thing to say about this game. It is a gamble yes, but more publishers need to take a chance like this, it promotes competition and better products for you and me
Ps. Doesn't WoW have a 15 bucks sub? Some people don't mind paying, esp when thats all they play. If DCUO can hook just 500 000 such people then I'd say it will be a great success. $30 million in game sales plus the sub.

dragonyght2836d ago (Edited 2836d ago )

APB was a broken game thats why it flop unlike DCUO it run pretty good except for miner bug hopefully was fix in the final build and sce promise content every month if they keep there promise they will survive i mean they have too otherwise theres no hope 4 mmo on console

GeneGodHand2836d ago (Edited 2836d ago )

@FailOverHero isn't it great trying to reason with your kind aren't they douches? XD This game will be a success good reception from the users will be its backbone this game has Stacy Keibler legs.

Keith Olbermann2836d ago

@M4ndat0ry_1nstall

LOL do not compare this to APB. DCUO is actually good. The only problem is the monthly sub which they may have to lower to cater to ps3 users. At least I hope they do so I can buy in.

FailOverHero2836d ago

@gene...and I did it without losing my cool or name calling or anything of the sort. Wish we could all just be civil. There was no need for me to call ign a troll and so I didn't

FACTUAL evidence2836d ago

This game kind of reminds me of city of heroes. Anyone played it before?

Keith Olbermann2836d ago

I did and it is 100 times better than coh. Combat is way better and story line kills coh.

ABizzel12836d ago

I think it's going to be a really good game and do great on PC, but it's going to fail on PS3 for 2 reasons.

1. The monthly fee. There's suppose to be a annual fee on PC for I believe $100 per year, which means PC games pay $150 to play DC Universe for the first year and $100 each year after that. So far no deal like that has been announced for the PS3 so PS3 gamers have to pay $60 for the game, and $180 a year to play. PS3 owners don't have to pay for online to play any other game, so why would they want to pay $180 just to play one game for a year. It makes no sense. For it to be successful on the PS3 there needs to be some kind of arrangement set up to where PS3 owners have to pay as little as possible, or else it's going to fail.

2. Too many exclusives. Sony has over 20 exclusives (PS3 and PSN) announced that are suppose to all come out this year (though I doubt all of them will, and even if they don't they don't need all of them). Not to mention new announcements at E3, Lip, and TGS. Only a hardcore MMO player would spend all their time in DC Universe when there's so much other stuff coming out for PS3 owners to play, and more than likely that hardcore MMO player would be playing this on PC.

I think they have a problem on their hand. On one side you have the PC crowd who's willing to pay for it, and on the other side you have the PS3 crowd who's not going to drop any extra cash on it. There's no middle ground either, because they can drop the price down to $5 a month for both and while PC gamers will be happy, it still wouldn't get the turn out they'd want.

At the end of the day I say PS+ subscribers should either play for free, and be able to play the game up to a certain level like they did with the MAG demo. And have to buy DLC that PC owners get free, or the game is going to struggle on the PS3, which is unfortunate, because it's a really fun game.

ECM0NEY2836d ago

15 a month is standard. Get over it. Most of my friends that have a PS3 are getting this game and some of them are new to MMOs and they dont even mind paying 15 a month. There will be plenty of people playing this game on PS3.

ABizzel12836d ago (Edited 2836d ago )

I don't understand why people are on here acting like this isn't a big deal when the know they aren't going to buy the game, and they don't want to pay the subscription fee either.

You seem like you actually want to buy the game, but you need to be realistic.

THE MAJORITY OF PS3 OWNERS DON'T WANT TO PAY TO PLAY 1 GAME ONLINE WHEN YOU CAN PLAY EVERY OTHER GAME FOR FREE.

That's the problem. And you and your friends will be some of the few people to actually keep up with the game after the first month. It makes no sense to buy this game on PS3 when it'll be $10 cheaper on PC and since SOE is a PC MMO dev. the PC version will be the better version, and to make things worse you can't even rent the game and enjoy your first month free.

Everyone can defend this as much as they want, but it's the truth. No one is saying it's a bad game, as a matter of fact we love it, but it's crazy for a free online service to charge people $15 a month to play 1 GAME online. There's no justifying it, and I don't care who disagrees with me. I guarantee that after the first month the online PS3 users are going to drop significantly.

Pandamobile2836d ago

Hahah, good luck with that.

ActionBastard2836d ago

The sub fee is a barrier, regardless how much fun I had in the beta.

GeneGodHand2836d ago (Edited 2836d ago )

15$ isn't that bad it is more expensive going to the movies and the first month is free did you read the article? It tells you why the game is 15$ a month this is a big ass mmo with Jim Lee art.

ActionBastard2836d ago

I get the why, but it doesn't matter. Ultimately, I'm still playing a game. As a console gamer, sub fees are new to me period. It has no reflection on the quality of the title, but I'm in wait and see mode initially. Still had an absolute blast in the beta which makes waiting all the more difficult.

nycredude2836d ago

Sub fees are new to you but it isn't new to the millions of mmo players on pc. If you had a blast in the beta I don't see what the problem is. If you like the product support the developers.

ABizzel12836d ago (Edited 2836d ago )

Nobody, but MMO players want to pay for a game after they've already purchased it, and the fee is going to cause the game to fail on PS3. It's a really fun game, but why would you pay $15 a month for it that's $180 a year aka 3 brand new games. It just doesn't make sense unless DC Universe is the only game you're going to play, and with all the other exclusives lined-up for this year having that $15 fee was PS3 version suicide. When you make an MMO it's geared for the PC crowd. Expecting people to pay to play 1 game online when they play every other game online for free is nothing, but suicide.

Baka-akaB2836d ago

why not give it a rest already ? Those who still wanna play it and dont wanna pay subs can enjoy the free month and stop afterward .

That wouldnt be so different from people who leave a usual game after a month

NYC_Gamer2836d ago (Edited 2836d ago )

why even try to match up against WOW?just make your game and be happy if it turns out successful.blizzard will be the only ones to beat wow with their new title.

FFXI1012836d ago

Although both titles are MMO but one is fantasy and the other is sci-fi. DC has no need to compete with WoW or any other titles.

Go Mets!!

zoks3102836d ago

Lol...... DCO is a great game but the mets sucks. Let's go Yankees!!!!!
Had to do it, could not let you slide with that one.
