Electronic Arts: Direct Downloads Will Be Majority of Game Sales By 2012

2011 is the last year of disc-based gaming’s dominance, says Electronic Arts’ chief executive.

By 2012, sales of digitally distributed games will surpass those of packaged goods, John Riccitiello said in an interview with IndustryGamers.

“At the end of [2011], the digital business is bigger than the packaged goods business, full stop,” Riccitiello said. “Then, you know, I think that we’ll find ways to even sell our packaged goods content in chunks and in pieces and subscriptions and micro-transactions.”

The story is too old to be commented.

Wishful thinking for the bottom-line oriented gaming company. For the consumer's sake, I hope their wrong.

I would like to be able to buy all my games through Download (PS3/360/PC full retail games) I dont trade in games, or buy used, so I would be one of the few people that would really enjoy it.

Im not sure why Sony & Microsoft wont release their full retail games for download on the same day they become available in stores. I would be all over that.

As long as they dont get rid of retail discs in stores, I see no problem with trying to go Digital Download for every single game.

Of course we would also need some larger HardDrives in our PS3's and 360's. 1TB wouldn't cut it for the people that have 100+ games. I hate the process of getting in the car, and having to deal with the trafic around here, then having to wait in line for my game. I would pay extra to skip that (although we should be paying less for downloaded games, because they dont have to spend the money on shipping, paying retail to sell their games, paying for the DVD/Bluray/packaging, or insurance)
