This type of article is just flamebait. They take the most award winning game of this generation (or in the last 10 years) and say, "Is it overrated?" Obviously not. Games don't get that many awards for no reason.

I will say this: When Uncharted was first announced, I thought it looked really stupid. Then, the demo came out and I played the death out of it. I was sold on the series since the very first demo. That's not overrated...that's opinion. It's apparently the opinion of millions of people.

the argument brought up about how Uncharted could be 'overrated' is simple filler that can be, and has been, applied to any great game title...

the writer's friend uses an age old stance of stating that other games do certain parts of Uncharted 2 just as well...ME 2 had 'just as memorable characters', Assasin's Creed II had 'just as pretty vistas', etc...

Nicely written article, and honest, too. The UC series is one of the most overrated of this gen. Halo and Gears also share the podium with it, in no particular order.

There's more inspiration and innovation in 1 hour of a game like Red Dead and Mass Effect than in the entirety of UC. All it is is beautiful. Outside of the look and sound, there is absolutely nothing new or innovative about it.

I wasn't crazy about the first one. The story was good and the characters were great. Game wise it was average.
The second one was fantastic though I didn't feel like it did anything that wasn't done already. They continued with the great graphics, story, and characters. While the game play was improved, it still felt linear and very scripted. Still amazing experience. I think the games are over rated for certain aspects and under rated in others.

Halo is a shooter with lots of community features.

KZ2 is a pretty corridor shooter.

Very good point. This article is pretty much useless in its suggestion that Uncharted 3 is overrated based upon the fact that there are other great games in other genres. I am having a hard time seeing as how the existence of other great games somehow diminishes the greatness of Uncharted 2. It is pretty much a consensus at this point that U2 is one of the best examples of interactive storytelling in video game history. Its release was a watershed moment for our industry.

Bu-bu-bu-bu my friend identify two other games that are cool, too. I feel insecure about my opinion now.

I enjoyed the uncharted series as much as most good games. Its by far the best game on the ps3 but its not even close to neing the best game ever. A pretty tomb raider is what it reminds me of and its very well done and well written. I have nothing negative to say about the uncharted series.

Uncharted in an action adventure game period. Its not suppose to be open ended with multiple endings etc etc. That would be just stupid. Uncharted received the highest number of awards because it takes established base gaming formula and polish it to insanely high levels.

Uncharted is not praised because it is revolutionary like say a game like ICO. No. When people talk about Uncharted for inspiration they talk about things like graphics, animation, voice acting, technology like water or snow effects, production values etc, etc. Uncharted is just the perfect storm of all of the sums put together and why people are saying its the pinnacle of gaming dev atm and why it has won more gaming awards than any other game in history so far.

I got to say. In comparison to the first Uncharted Among Thieves is a bit over rated. The story is standard Hollywood cliche material, theres many of scripted events and the characters doesn't feel quite as compelling in comparison to Drakes Fortune. However as far as gameplay is concerned it definitely deserves the acclaim it gets but as the "complete package". I think UC2 falls a bit short of that moniker but I wouldn't call the franchise over rated since the firsts game nailed the story, characters & immersion while the UC2 nailed gameplay.

If the third game is to have the best of the first game with the best of the 2nd game it would have no faults at all.

When the series is over, people will remember it fondly, but it simply won't have the staying power as a lot of classic Nintendo titles, etc. Not like that's anything to be ashamed of, Naughty Dog did a fantastic job of making third person action games relevant again.

I hate the Wii, it's trash, but thinking uncharted will be talked about for the next 15-20 years is foolish. It's a great game at a time the industry sorely needed something like it. I have many new favourite games from this generation that I will take to the grave, but nothing that will likely be talked about for decades.

Acknowledging Nintendo classics is mandatory, and if you don't agree, you haven't the slightest clue what you're talking about.

Games with staying power are ones that jump from generation to generation timelessly (Mario, Zelda, Metal Gear, Sonic, etc). I haven't seen Uncharted do this yet (and it probably won't), but it is still superb. I don't know what we're arguing about here.

EDIT: For the record, why does thinking Zelda is one of the best franchises I've ever played on any console make me have a lesser opinion? I haven't even owned a Nintendo console since the N64, and I still stand by my decision. If I listed off my favourite titles this gen, I'm sure 90% of them would be the same as yours.

You're right redwolf. If anything this series should be played by all developers. People may not realize that the first game holds up too well to this day. Why should it be played by all developers other than the Biowares, Bethesdas and Rockstars with the other Sony jugernaughts like Insomniac, Media Molecule etc...? The story telling. The games are just really good stories to play and follow. You will not put the games down if you like a single player experience that will get you to like even love the characters in the game. Elena, Sully and Mr. Drake are fantastic in the first game. I don't know any game at the time when it was released that could really not let you put down the controller because you wanted to see what happens next. The ending of the games were human and made you want to play another game with these characters. The second started and finished with pure win. Epic adventure that I have played about 3 times so far. Played the original about 4 times or so on different difficulty. Everything comes together in this series without any real sacrifices. You just get a high quality experience from beginning to end. I love this series the most in that I know I will not regret getting this serie' games day one. I can only say that about a few series like Mario, MGS, Zelda, GT, GTA, Halo, Elder Scrolls, GOW, GEOW and ME this gen. If Bioshock 2 wasn't released and the next game was Infinite I'd put that series there too. Dragon Age may end up there depending on what Bioware can release. I truly believe that the Uncharted series is the culmination of the gaming medium with a controller and no motion control to date. I think that from Mario to Zelda to Halo to GOW to GEOW to ME have influenced this game and made the game a high production with amazing dialogue and believeable characters. I urge games to take a look at Uncharted 1 so that they can be surprised at its brilliance and was overlooked because of the all important multiplayer. In honesty you're going to like it if you got a little love for old school single player games. It is a classic and a great way to flesh out the relationship between Elena, Drake and Sully. I suppose that Elena will make a cameo in the next game at least once so this is a fan service game from what I've read. I hope that Chloe makes a return in a turban disguise in a desert city. I cannot wait for U3. This year as of next week with LBP2 and ME2 is a good time for gamers. Pick up U1 in preparation for U3 which will tie up some loose ends on the Sully and Drake side of things. I know this is long but I felt I had to get this off my chest and I feel relieved if even one of you pick up U1 and enjoy it for what it is; a really polished single player game.

It's a fun game for sure. But anything with a 6-8 hour campaign doesn't deserve anywhere near the praise that Uncharted gets. To a lot of people, that's barely scratching the surface of potential.

However, the perception seems to stem at gaming's "weaknesses" rather than "overrating" factor of Uncharted itself. At this point, reviewers can simply get away with their reviews by stubbornly clinging to the side where a certain game doesn't look their best.

While this may cause some controversy amongst readers, it's always the opinions and facts that is constantly running to their faces. For instance: "XXX game/sequel is just more of running/shooting/platforming, etc". A really good excuse to give underwhelming scores (and also a dirty one as well).

That's why I try to look at points where the game is at it's strongest: Better graphics/sound/level design - though it could be classified under "more of the same with a shiny new coat of paint". You have to agree at this point there's really not much you can do for sequels - unless of course you want to change the whole IP formula in itself.

This is why games like ICO and SoTC can easily standout amongst the rest. It can be argued that they relate in someway as a prequel/sequel yet the gameplay elements are far too contrast to warrant the same criticisms the article itself is trying to make.

But does this mean Uncharted is "overrated"? Let's look at history right here: Before Killzone 2, a lot of people tend to oversee Uncharted despite selling a few million copies. Up until Uncharted 2, the franchise was basically in the shadows. The enormous jump between two games (from practically awardless to being the most AWARDED game of all time) has proven that there is a working formula (which was severely overlooked) that managed to capture the attention of gamers/gaming media everywhere.

Whether they think Uncharted is an overrated franchise is up to their opinion. But I'd like to ask where the hell where they when the original Uncharted was released? That's something they've got to think about.

A lot of good games get accused of being overrated but in the main they earned their praise and Uncharted fits this better than most after the first game was, if anything, played down rather than hyped up.

Uncharted's biggest strength is it's mix of satisfying gameplay styles which, like MGS4, allow you to take on the linear levels in a variety of ways-sneaking, full frontal/all guns blazing or a blend of the two at any point in between. Then there's puzzles and the way better than average characterisation, script and acting.

So, though you're a multi account troll, it's still worth telling you that your trolling falls down because a game is just sometimes good-and this is one of those times. There's never been a massive ad push for an Uncharted game and to build a player base the size it has without Gears type exposure is surely a sign of quality. All those GOTY awards prolly say something too-but, naturally, nothing LIKE as much as your opinion based on hating Sony. And not having played the games.

UC2 was a great game, my wife would make me wait till she got off work so she could watch me play it. the controls were solid graphics were very nice, and the story was great but what made it special were all the little things like Nate protecting his face from the heat of a fire while walking by or the seen when the helicopter shoots the building your in and the whole building starts to lean and crash into the building across the street and all the funiture starts sliding and soldiers start tumbling its so cinematic right in the middle of game play and theres tons of moments like that.

Uncharted doesn't have an ounce of originality other than it's title. As a matter of fact change Nathan Drake's name to Indiana Jones and everything else can stay the same. The cover system, right down to flipping the tables comes courtesy of Gears, Platforming from the far superior Prince of Persia franchise. The gun play mechanic, if you could call it that is broken. Bad AI and shoot the same guys over and over and Uncharted is average at best.

Uncharted, for all of it's award is not even close to being the highest selling franchise on the PS3...it's actually a multi-plat that's at the top.

As for the graphics...it's all smoke and mirrors no different than the movie's it copies like this...

Not only does it play like a movie, most of it is. It's all pre-rendered...actually ND refers to it as " simulations ". Whatever you want to call it, Uncharted 1 had 80 simulations while Uncharted 2 had 564...O_o...their numbers, not mine. Every time you jumped any where or opened a door, it triggered some movie clip. The physics for part 2 were handled by Havok after the inadequate first game and ND actually hired the platforming guru from the superior platforming game Tomb raider to " help " them with part 3...they know they need it. The multi-player is a non-factor and will never reach the lofty heights of Halo, COD or Gears.

As for all the awards...have a vote tomorrow among the people who ACTUALLY pay and play their games...Uncharted wouldn't win anything. MW 2 was the GOTY in '09...the sales point that out loud and clear.

It sits on a pedestal because it's what the gaming industry wants to promote as a clean cut, romance novel of a game that the family can enjoy. In one of the posts here someone mentioned how his wife would wait for him to come home and play Uncharted so she could watch...that says it all.

I really enjoy Uncharted. I don't believe that the Uncharted games are the best I've ever played. I'm more a fan of open world/sandbox types of games and I've had more fun with the GTA series, Infamous and Red Dead Redemption. But that's my preference.

I will say that I don't believe that I've ever seen a more beautiful looking game than Uncharted 2. The graphics are really impressive.

I love Red Dead and Infamous and GTA but sometimes the sand boxes become quite boring and I just don't seem to be able to finish red dead because I'm always riding about wasting time on my beloved horse.

At least Uncharted even though scripted and yes pretty linear keeps the pace and action going rather than a 15 minute ride/drive somewhere that I would really rather skip.

Don't misinterpret what I'm saying as I said I love these games but uncharted at least keeps that pace all the way through.

Now I know I will burn for this but heck, just my two cents.

Uncharted is overrated and while I will not argue that it is one of the best action adventure games on any platform, it has very little to offer in terms of innovation. Don't jump at me, just read through the facts first.

The whole story setting and characters have already been done to death and better (Indiana Jones + National Treasure + Firefly, yes I went there) and to say that the story elements aren't ripped off the above mentioned movie/series titles is obviously either pure fanboysm or not knowing the franchises enough.

The gameplay elements - from the cover shooting mechanics from Gears of War to Prince of Persia platforming and simple puzzles. It is all well done and has extremely well pacing but it is nothing NEW or innovative about it.

Done to death - opinion, many people like certain types of stories, and anxiously await the next one to drop.

Then to harshly say 'ripping off' story elements, while giving credit to Gears for cover mechanics, (ironic isn't it?), when 'inspired by' is more appropriate, shows inconsistency (and possibly your own hat collection) on your part. You use National Treasure as an example, yet it should fall to your same criticisms of Uncharted, because it was neither original nor innovative.

Adventure and treasure hunting stories go back far beyond your examples. Poe's 'The Gold Bug' immediately comes to mind. From decoding the message, to finding the tree, the skull, dropping the gold bug, etc. Damn, I love that story, but I digress.

That brings us to the possibility of historical inspiration, e.g., de Leon's search for the fountain of youth, the search for various pharoah's tombs and the curses associated, lost cities like Machu Picchu, etc.

Yet, if I disagree with your premise, it's fanboyism or a lack of knowledge? Perhaps, it's just that I am educated, have read literature, understand that every story told falls within a small number of plot archetypes, and recognize that writing draws on your experiences, which includes stories you've heard, read, seen, etc.

Your overall tone seems condescending, albeit veiled, and speaks to an agenda, regardless of your intent.

New and innovative do not automatically equate to better. Patent offices are filled with innovative ideas that never see the light of day, because while innovative, they are not necessarily practical or better. Moreover, that air dried fillet cooked medium rare, that I ate last night, didn't need to be new or innovative in any way to be one of the best pieces of beef I have eaten.

I am not trying to make Uncharted any more than it is, or in fact needs to be, which is a damn fine game. My previous post simply stated my position, that I value the awards of a group of Naughty Dog's peers, a peer review if you will, over a journalist's or pseudo-journalist's. There is no higher compliment for one's work than to be held in high regard by people who do what one does. This is what separates it from the 'popularity contest' type awards. If ND's peers rate it so highly, who is in a proper position to challenge them?

I don't think Uncharted is overrated. It is by far my favorite series on the PS3.

On the other hand I do think that many of the games on the PS3 tend to get overhyped by the hardcore fanboys of the console. Uncharted DF, Uncharted 2, GOW3, Killzone 2 and MGS4 are about the only games I really enjoyed on the PS3. Most of the other exclusives I found to be more mediocre than they were hyped to be. Not that they were horrible, but I am just saying that there are so many other multiplatform games that I would rather play.

Uncharted, though, is a great franchise. Yes, it is linear. But it is the best game of that type. It plays out like a blockbuster movie.

While it's true that most games hide behind graphics and how polished it looks, it's not necessarily the same for Uncharted. It just happens to be a good and polished game. Sure the gameplay might not be the most original thing (as people say Gears of War meets Assassins Creed) but Uncharted 2, for the type game that it is right, did both 3rd person shooting with platforming and few puzzles right.

Same reason the first Gears of War was praised when it first came out and people criticized it for just being like killswitch but better and that's just it, Gears did 3rd person shooters right. Same with Uncharted, it does platforming + third person shooting with few puzzles right and it's really unfair to criticize it for what it's not.

The game also does a good job balancing the shooting and the platforming, not giving you too much of one over the other and sometimes combing both.

There's no point missing because Naughty Dog wanted exactly that... A polished scripted action adventure that centers around characters and story progression.

Their intention is to make the Uncharted franchise as cinematic as possible and they understood that the right way to do so was to develop a linear game with amazing scripted events.

On top of that, they packed the already great experience with a perfect balance of gameplay (gunplay, platforming and puzzles), extreme high production values, great presentation, amazing visuals, superb animations and a beautiful score.

If one franchise is not overrated this gen, is this one. Uncharted never wanted to be anything else than what it intended to be.

Those wanting something else should not ask it from Uncharted and should just look for it in another game.

Went and read your take on why UC2 was not the best game of this Gen like some people say it is. I think the whole concept of 'Game of a Generation' is kind of retarded 2bh. I think people get way WAY to caught up in which game "defined our generation" and get taken away from the fact that there are way to many opinon's of what a good game is for one game to truly speak for an entire generation of gamers. I would say it's better for everyone to be able to discuss there personal game's of the year/generation with eachother minus the fanboyism (probably wishful thinking though lol)

Back on topic though, I have to say UC2 was easily one of my fav. game's sofar of this generation. The amount of polish on the overall package is extraordinary. And tbh if you felt the single player was too scripted, which is what I got from your post, than the multiplayer is where it's at my friend. Personally, it blows my friggin mind how much work ND put into this game, totally destroyed the notion that you can have either a tight multiplayer OR single player experience in one game. I've played other franchise's (Halo, Gear's COD, etc) and to me, i haven't come across a game that successfully delivers on all levels like UC2. It's given me the most addictive multiplayer experience of the last two gen's imho. And I was addicted to Halo for awhile and loved gears 2 when it came out, still go back n play it every once in a blue. COD never really grew on me, but anytime I want a quick fix of organized mayhem and destruction online, hands down I reach for UC2 first. Don't know how much you got into the multiplayer, but if you feel that strongly about the singleplayer maybe you should delve into that aspect of the game a little more.

I respect your opinion, but disagree.

Never before have I played a game where in one "scripted" battle, I could climb up a sign, hang from that sign and shoot two guys, drop down, pick up and toss an explosive canister at a group of enemies, slide under one guy for a quick shot to his "boys", then break the neck of the final enemy.

To get any deeper gameplay than that, you'd have to choose another genre. Perhaps an open world RPG?

With that said, it was a good read with a few good points. UC2 is a heavily scripted shooter with linear gameplay, but why should that be considered a flaw? I could pick apart any game and harp on it's perceived flaws.

My favorite games of 2010 are ME2 (my own personal GoTY), GoW3, and Alan Wake. I could write a blog on the many flaws of Alan Wake, GoW2, or any game for that matter, but only because every game has them, or that particular game did not suit my tastes. The cool thing is, we're all different, so what you view as a flaw, I might view as something else.

I could point out that no matter how open the world in Mass Effect appears to be, all roads will lead you down the same path, and guess what? That's ok. I don't care that 90% of the battles are all take place directly in front of me in some corridor that conveniently has cover laying about. That's ok. The game is still awesome.

Or how about the other game the Author's friend mentioned. I could climb up any of the beautiful buildings in ACII, but what will I do when I get there? The exact same thing I've been doing for the last 15 hours which would be slaughtering the same group of guys that put up little to no effort using the same "surround him...but only send in one fool at a time" tactics.

Not really a deal breaker in either case, but it does highlight the fact that anyone that goes out to hunt for flaws, will find them.

I love UC2, but I understand that others will not feel the same way. People tell me all day how wonderful Fallout 3 was, but to this day, I have no desire to play beyond Megaton.

Yeah, it happens for other games(I can remember them for Halo and Mass Effect2 for games on the 360 at the time the articles were written)but, in fairness, I would tend to say that Uncharted gets a few more than it should and maybe more than the other games do.

Elements of most good, or even great, games ARE overrated but as a whole games of the class of an Uncharted, LBP, Gears, ME,Halo or MGS add up to more than the sum of their parts. It's exactly why these games all won awards and earned the respect and fear and love and loathing of the two sets of fanboys.

One thing I hate about gamers this generation is this attitude that if a game isn't to their taste it's somehow "broken" on some level. The platforming is not suppose to be too challenging because it would slow down the flow of the game and can ruin the experience of the game.

Overall isn't suppose to heavily focus on either of them and instead balances out the gameplay.

I was disappointed by the single player. Mainly ticked off by the super obvious visual clues making some sections feel like autopilot. I had most my fun with the multiplayer, as your ability to climb around things and ninja some bishes was seemingly more oiled and facilitated in the multi-leveled online maps.

Then I hooked up a sub-woofer and played the campaign again at high volumes. It really was a game changer. Since its going for the cinematic experience, you really need to create a cinematic environment, and its not going for the type of movie you can watch with headphones on, its going for the one that shakes your seat and melts your face. Very superb game. However, I still think there's lots of neglected potential caused by trying to be accessible.

I think so, people hype the series up to be among the greatest of all time, and it just isn't. What it is, is great and awesome fun. Not amongst the greatest of all times but certainly amongst the greats. But what does it matter, opinion is opinion.

Totally agree. Uncharted 2 looks AMAZING, no doubt, and the sound effects and cinematography are top-notch for sure. However, the gameplay is very average - let's remember, we're talking about a game, not a movie.

For it's presentation, I'd for sure give it a 10/10 or even 11/10, but as far as gameplay goes, probably a 7.5/10. Yes, it has a lot of cool types of gameplay blended together, like 3rd person shooting, platforming, puzzling, etc., but it doesn't do them nearly as well as games that specialize in them, like Gears of War, Assassin's Creed, or any puzzle game that ever existed (the puzzles are terrible in Uncharted, like they're geared at 5 year olds) It's a case of "Jack of all trades, master of none", when it comes to gameplay, and that's why I feel it's overrated.

God of War III falls into this as well - pretty much perfect presentation, but super-arcade and shallow gameplay. Bayonetta is 10x the GAME that GOW3 is.

Since I'm on a roll with Sony exclusives (sorry fanboys, the truth hurts), let's toss Metal Gear Solid 4 in here, too. Probably the best case of overrated GAME this generation. Again, AWESOME story, graphics, sound, etc. But it felt like a 14 hour movie where I would touch my controller once every 45 minutes to make Snake move a few hundred feet... and then another hour cutscene. Hideo Kojimna should have just made it a movie, because as a VIDEO GAME, it's pretty awful. Seriously, the gameplay is the worst in the series by far. MGS1 was one of the best games of the PS era, and it steadily went downhill with each sequel because Kojima focused more on directing a movie and forgot about the GAME of MGS.

If you're going to do a cinematic game, do what Quantic Dream does and make an INTERACTIVE movie. Heavy Rain is probably the most underrated game this generation. But I don't even know if you can categorize it as a game, it's just crazy good interactive narrative.

I personally see Bayonetta and GOW3 as two completely different type of game, Seeing Kratos do Bayonetta combo's looks stupid, Doesn't suit kratos at all.GOW3 gameplay was never broken so why fix it? I own every console out there, and I have since the Sega Master Syetem/Nintendo days in the late 80s. I've built my own arcade machine from scratch. The fact is, Bayonetta is 10x the GAME (read it please GAME GAME GAME GAME GAME GAME GAME GAME GAME GAME GAME GAME GAME GAME GAME GAME, as in GAMEPLAY, get it now?) that GOW3 is. GOW3 has slightly better gameplay than the TMNT arcade game. Load up GOW3 in 10 years and watch how terrible it will age because it relies 90% on the graphics for your enjoyment. I do not care if you disagree, because it is the complete truth. Just remember this post in 10 years, because if you do, you will say to yourself "dang, that Artynerd guy was totally right".

Also, Gears of War is a better 3rd person shooter than Uncharted 2. No argument there. Why? Because Gears is a DEDICATED 3rd person shooter, whereas Uncharted isn't a dedicated anything, and therefore excels at nothing in terms of actual gameplay. It's a great mixed bag of decent gameplay mechanics wrapped up in a beautiful package. Fallout and Oblivion are WAY better games - depth, customization, exploration, interaction, freedom. Uncharted has none of these things, it's essentially one step up from a rail shooter, and if you think that isn't true, you're just too dumb to see it.

What is linear supposed to insinuate. I loved GTA but the stories could of been written by my little cousin. "Go kill this guy", "show this guy you mean business". The overall stories were pretty good, but I always preferred Metal Gear, because the characters and stories we're always more interesting and impactful, you almost never forget a metal gear character, whether it be badguy or good guy. Yet Metal Gear was a more linear game. Mass effect has branches at too many pieces of it's game. When I'm listening to dialogue and it pauses to say press X or Y with the most zombieish look on a characters face it takes me out of the game. Does that mean Mass Effect has an inaffective story... no it's just a different approach...smh.

You see when people use the word linear or scripted, I know they haven't played the series or in the least uncharted 2 through to the endings. You see what they do is go to Youtube, watch a video and say to themselves hmmm.... how can I hate something that looks so brilliant and flawless??? Uncharteds story has a pace that fits it, there are down times for conversation, downtimes, for exploration, moments with action etc. Any true uncharted fan would know this "computerandvideogames.co m" "If your FRIEND(who doesn't exist in this case) questions that" (Air Quotes) it's a pretty easy reevaluation. And the gameplay is almost miles ahead of almost anything, that's 3rd person with a gun, outside of splinter cell, Metal Gear and a few others.

So the word LINEAR has to come with an asterisk, and Overrated..., come on I mean the game feels almost perfect in direction, the characters feel real and true to life. The gameplay is realistic because no real hero is gonna run through the middle of a firefight all the time, sometimes he'll be running away, ducking and dodging, and coming away victorious in the end just feels all the more victorious.

I think Uncharted was perhaps the best new ip this generation with excellent graphics and a heavenly mix from various genres.

In the sequel i think they threw countless enemies at you so you get the feeling that the game is longer than it is, still a good game though but i prefer the nr 1.

I played UC1 and 2.

I have come to the conclusion that UC2 is a must buy and that everyone should play it.

UC1 however is NOT a MUST buy. Please don't give me hate for this. I honestly feel that UC1 is an 8 out of 10 game. The story was not that good and it was short. Therefore I think UC1 is a bit overrated when coming from Drake die hards, but in terms of it's popularity when UC1 was released it was not overrated or underrated. It got the attention it deserved.

UC2 is a must buy on the other hand. I loved everything about the game and everyone should play it including xbot fanbois and people who say "I'm not into that Indiana Jones thing." UC2 is definitely not overrated and deserves every praise it gets. I'm looking forward to UC3 first day buy for me.

In uncharted online i can jump and climb and crawl and roll and jump behind cover and hang from stuff and fire etc. its like the dude from Live free die hard movie who did the parqour stuff and got kicked into the grinder in that ice place by bruce willis. Gears is just stupid shooting with graphics not as good as uncharted. bad characters, garbage story, regular shoot gameplay with garbage cover system compared to uncharted. bad ai, gears is super slow in moving and aiming as if you were robo cop. Uncharted is just way better and if you cant like the game just for the amazing uncharted characters alone. uncharted and uncharted 2 are great games but there was something about them that didnt stick with me. it was the kind of game that i enjoyed a lot all the way through but once it was done i wanted no part in replaying it as it kinda felt like a chore to go back. i got kind of tired of the duck/cover and shoot method. another thing that kind of bored me was the platforming. there is nothing wrong with it, its just that i felt i didnt really have control and i was more or less pressing x most of the time. it got repetitive in that aspect but by no means is the game overrated. it deserves any praise and awards it gets as it was a fantastic experience. with that being said i look forward to uncharted 3.

Speaking as a PS3 owner, you may think "oh fanboy must be bias" but here's my two cents; I skipped Uncharted 1 because I thought it looked average and not my sort of thing, BUT that was almost a huge mistake.

After about 5 months of being a PS3 owner I borrowed Uncharted 1 off my friend, let me just say that was the first game I played which had me playing every chapter in anticipation of the storyline.

When Uncharted 2 came around I just went into obsessive fanboy mode, UC2 is amazing: the production values, the visuals, the sound, the acting and the characters were all perfect, just like playing Half Life 2 for the first time, I knew it would be one of those games.

I remember, back when Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was nearing release, I went over to the game store across the street to place my pre-order (they usually got games a few days early, and only charged $56.99 for them, instead of $59.99).

I was like, "I'd like to pre-order Uncharted: Drake's Fortune."

"Is that for the 360?"

"No. It's for the PS3."

In fact, most of the gaming media tried to downplay the original, and even the sequel, before the games even hit store shelves.

There are many reasons why this game was raved about UNCHARTED 2.
mainly because the gameplay ,the story and the character for anyone who followed the guy griped you .you felt his pain and yet he was very funny guy even when the going was tough. to make a game like that were you the player can laugh relate or feel the character is very special game. let alone the huge work involved in the games visuals.

as for gameplay well lets see SP, witch you could replay and go find that hidden treasure while racking up money to be used in MP. also unlocking new what i call cheats" but arnt.

Even Halo doesn't have a sturdy movie set up. No almost every game is NOT being made into a movie. Plus anyone (such as yourself) can make a story sound boring. Hell ND said they combined GEARS with tomb raider to make the game!!! those are good games!!!! So if uncharted copies good games....how the hell does it equal medioore? Lastly what games look better than Uncharted 2? Almost every major game site have said even recently that its still one of the best if not THE best still on consoles. If your implying there is something better on 360 or comparing it to games that aren't even out yet then your def not a ps3 dude you a bot in disguise. Like I said before and I'll say it again there is nothing out on consoles that currently beats uncharted 2 except maybe God of war 3 Other than that pc has the best. Crysis is a prime example of this. I will admit that no dev would say THEIR OWN GAME is bad, its bad for business, but the game developers choice awards are ALL THE MAJOR DEVELOPERS i'm talking bioware, bungie, infinity ward, cryteck, blizzard, ea, ubisoft an just about every other big name developer all coming together and saying what was the best of the best that year. So if ALL the devs say uncharted 2 is the best, they are experts in game development and there opinion is valid enough. To the CALL of duty comment the devs DID say it was overrated by not giving it any awards at any of their awards show except when call of duty 4 was out (which is like the best one). Devs wont come out and say " hey we think cod is overrated" they justified it with their actions by giving it NO awards at the show. PLus if you look uncharted 2 was unanimous at that show almost every dev studio voted for uncharted 2. Now on to the movie deal, yes you can say that EVERY game is being made into a movie... kinda like bioshocks 4 year movie dev time and it still hasn't started filming, most film projects get dropped if they dont get into production within the first year of its introduction. Uncharted's movie is on the fast track and WILL be made into a movie.... games like bioshock darksiders halo etc will not. Just cuz they announced doesn't mean they will happen. There was originally supose to be a mgs movie, but when the hype from 4 died down the project was dropped. There aren't that many movies game and there wont continue to be. ive been saying it since the day i played uncharted (on the day it released) and then again with uncharted 2 (again, on the day it released as well) - theyre good little 'check your brain in at the door' games, but theyre nowhere near the best games of the generation IMO because theyre so very very basic in terms of gameplay. theyre the most linear games you can ever get, with sloppy controls and terrible, basically non-existant AI. if Uncharted 'only' had the graphics of say Crackdown, PS3 fanboys wouldnt give it even a quarter of the recognition and hype that they do now.

the one bit that really struck me was this:

now before you all go hitting that disagree button like i said sony were the devil - im not saying Uncharted is a bad game/series. theyre fun, theyre graphically impressive, and i own both of them. but theyre NOT as great as fanboys make them out to be. they dont break any new ground, they dont innovate, and if they werent PS3 exclusives the same people that call them the best games of all time would not give them a second glance.

This is truly a gen' full of whiny ScottCJones types where it's becoming more accepted to be pretentious and nitpick than it is to simply say you enjoy a game and are happy with your purchase. Soon as anyone has a favorite game, they're a naughty fanboy.

Not everyone likes the same stuff. I don't like RPGs for example, have neither the time nor patience to play as a space cowboy for 150 hours, half of which is reading or listening to dialogue and menus.

Uncharted and those types of games suit my gaming lifestyle more. I see them for what they are, thanks. Money well spent.

I can understand how anyone who hasn't actually played Uncharted 2 could think it was overrated. It doesn't really have any one thing you can point to and show why it's so damn good but once you play it you understand why it's so well loved.

In all my time of gaming since the days of the ZX Spectrum it's the most pure fun I've ever had with a game. It's just so pleasurable to play, it feels good to control, looks beautiful and there's never a lull in which you don't feel like you're about to see something great. It's one of those games you put on to play through one level and wind up completing for the 60th time without even thinking about it.

Its good but its pretty much just gears of war and assasin creed gameplay mashed up with an indiana jones story. Its a great game its just not all that original and i think some people confuse adding great graphics to mechanics from other games and a story and charechters very similar to those in indiana jones for originality. About those comparisons. How is Uncharted made up of Assassin's Creed gameplay when the two games came out the SAME WEEK in Nov 2007, only 5 days apart? Unless you're suggesting Naughty Dog travelled to the future, stole the gameplay and brought it back to 2005 so they could launch neck-in-neck with Ubisoft in 2007. :p

Drake's Fortune came out only a year after Gears when Uncharted was already deep into development. Gears ain't a platformer, and 007 was doing the 3rd person cover/stealth shooter thing YEARS earlier with Everything or Nothing and From Russia with Love. Gears gets too much credit when it in turn copied Bond, and Mass Effect 2's cover 'copied' all of them.

It's not just the stunning visuals and intuitive game play but the wit and charm the characters bring to anyone who plays Uncharted and especially Uncharted 2.

There's a sense of connection/occasion this game gives to the player that you won't be able to find elsewhere.

It's how the writers'/directors' builds up the storyline from start to finish which makes the game an absolutely epic adventure.

Several good points, but the fact is... the tech, animation and everything behind Uncharted could all easily be slapped into an openworld Assassin's Creed environment, you'd simply lose the set pieces and things akin to linear level design.

None of the amazing animations would be restricted by a linear or open game. It does allow for the addition of a greater level of minute detail, but this is the path the devs chose. It wasn't a limitation. Obviously there will be games in other categories which seem to "outdo" Uncharted in some way, but compare it to other games in the same category and it blows everything out of the water. That's why, if you consider had ND gone a different route, they would have performed as equally well in another genre and been the best there too.

When I first played 2 I thought yes, even though I loved the first one. However, I am nearly complete on my second playthrough a year after the first and think it is superb. One of the 5 best games this gen.

This question can be asked of any high rating, popular and/or high selling game. But the fact is that this game series is absolutely awesome and from part 1 to part two, jumped from a 9 score to a 9.5, so if part 3 is any better then I will have to score it a 10. The online multiplayer in part 2 is excellent and adds non-stop replayability to the game.

I also thought the 2nd Resistance was overated after my 1st playthrough. I then moved onto the online, and thought Resistance 1 was a better experience all round, I then traded Resistance 2 for that reason, as I thought it was way less great than the 1st. But several months later I just started craving the game to be in my collection again, and thought I'd made a mistake getting rid of it....I bought it back for $20(au), and after playing a couple of sessions online, and appreciating it's 60 player splendor more than ever, I then moved onto the single player game, and now realized that it is really a great game, and one of the most awesome exclusives on any system. Also with the impending 3rd game in the installment, it will be awesome to have the 3 set of this great series. Unchartered, Resistance, Killzone, Motorstorm, GT, LBP, inFamous, GOW and Ratchet and the developers of these games, amongst other exclusive developers and series are the reason I favor my PS machines over my other machines, they simply have the best exclusive games, and developers, and this is a fact not my opinion, and the best part is that a lot of there developers are encouraged to come up with new IP's, even when they are launching a new machine, as shown with Insomniac releasing Resistance and Evolution with Motorstorm, when both already had known, established IP's they could have used to launch the machine.

If Unchartered is over rated/hyped and such, then Halo and Mario are the Kings of these departments, as the hype and over rating of these titles is waaay more telling than Unchartered. I mean all are great games in there own right....But Unchartered is pushing the envelope way more than a generic space shooter, and a over aged plumber starring platformer on a gloriafied PS2 with a standard waggle-ee, gimick of a controller.. And all the Nintendo fanboys that think these motion controllers are more than a gimmick, just need look at games like Donkey Kong, Dead Space 2 and other such high scoring games that use cinvential controllers and control methods, while motion games struggle to score half marks from reviewers.
