How Far Has The PS3 Exclusive Franchise Resistance Evolved Visually?

GB - Resistance Fall of Man was the best PlayStation 3 launch game and was a commercial as well as critical success for Insomaniac Games. Ever since, along with the Killzone franchise, Resistance has become the flagship title for the PlayStation 3. Resistance 2 was a huge leap from Fall of Man, with improvements all around in the visuals, gameplay and online department.

Resistance 3 video was amazing, the trailer shown at spike. I hope they have a decent MP though.

I have platinum in R2, 10k kills baby

dogfacesu5285d ago (Edited 5285d ago )

10K,.. Karooo,.. you are crazy ,..

You know I've just put R2 in my PS3 abour 20 minutes ago and now I am charging my controller,..
Really don't know why,..Was thinking just what was really fun to play ,.. coop is so much fun that's why :)

despair5285d ago

10k sounds like it would take some serious time, I got like 100 kills total, but then again I suck at console FPS MP :)

ZorinInc5285d ago

"Resistance 2 was a huge leap from Fall of Man, with improvements all around in the visuals, gameplay and online department."

Absolutely no. Uglier game that lost all it's atmophere and charm. Gameplay terrible, no weapon wheel, worse enemies, the most pathetic overhyped waste of time and polygons boss battles. Online was a travesty to the loyal fans who went straight back to RFoM.

You don't speak for the majority of Resistance players. The sequel was universally hated. How it scored higher in reviews than the original and also Killzone 2 is a disgrace. Its not often I agree with Edge Magazine but they were spot on indentifying the mediocrity of the product.

Instead of gaining more Resistance supports they lost what they had to begin with and to be honest I doubt I'll pick up this game anywhere near it's release. No excitement in this game dispute their reassurances that it's returning to it's origins.

Resistance FoM 9/10. Resistance 2 6/10.

dogfacesu5285d ago (Edited 5285d ago )

I love R2 more, because enemies drop faster,.. but that is my opinion,..don't hate me :)

But you guys are right about atmosphere ,.. Game was way less gritty, and I also missed the weapon wheel(but kind of got used to 2 weapons),..

Also cannot comment on Multiplayer, because I mostly played Coop,..
So maybe you guys are right,..

AKS5285d ago

The 8-player online co-op mode of R2 was a lot of fun, but the rest appeared to be rushed. I believe IG even admitted that this was the case. They'll do better with R3.

El Nino5285d ago

I agree but your a little harsh lol

I think R2 was still good, but it lost its hardcore base, the mp in rfom felt unique, whereas in r2 it didnt. Another thing...and it doesnt get mentioned often is the difference in the community on r2 compared to rfom, the party support for rfom was great, in-built friends list, great party system...sometimes we'd just sit off in the party section for a while talking before we got into a game.

I was in the R2 beta (girl with a stick) and from the moment i played it, i knew that it lost something that made rfom so special, i still bought the retail version because i enjoy the story and still like the franchise but i was so so dissapointed with the MP. Alot of people say they fell in love with online gamine with counter strike, halo, call of duty etc, but rfom got me into online gaming and its still the most memorable online game i've played.

kaveti66165285d ago

"You don't speak for the majority of Resistance players. The sequel was universally hated."

Do you see the irony?

Active Reload5284d ago

@sparced...wow, I loved R:FOM...way more than R2, but I don't share the seemingly loathing your comment produced, lol.

Anyway, yeah, R2 was somewhat of a step backwards in some areas. The sales show this also. The first Resistance sold like 4 million I think, while the sequel barely reached 2 million. I've never seen a drop off like that in video game sales.

SephireX5284d ago

I haven't played Res 2 yet but played Res 1 and I didn't like the weapon wheel because I think players should be limited to three weapons at max, two large and a pistol. Res 1 was a great game but was boring for the first quarter of the game and then was a lot better. The Res 3 video looks amazing though and I've high hopes for this game.

SuperStrokey11235284d ago

I personaly like 2 more than 1, to each their own

specialguest5284d ago

Resistance 2 was an improvement on Resistance 1, but some of the environment textures were just pathetic. I recall this stage being one that had many poor textured objects: http://ps3media.ign.com/ps3...

BattleAxe5285d ago

I've got my R2 platinum too, and getting 10,000 kills did take quite a bit of time.

Jaces5285d ago

I'm with ya Karooo on that one, took me a good month playing on and off. If you keep a steady 500 kills a day you could do it in a week and a half.

Anyway I think resistance franchise has gotten better graphically, can't say how R3 will look until we get some polished footage.

the_best_player5284d ago

Evolved more than Halo games thats for sure

but all PS3 exclusives surpass their previous iterations and this franchise is no exception.

Visuals are meant to be improved upon but I am happy that the devs are talented enough to go beyond their previous work every single time.

I am a happy PS3 owner, 2011 couldn't be better

gameseveryday5285d ago

As far as visuals go:

1. UC2 greater than Uc2
2. Resistance 2 greater than resistance fall of man
3. Ratchet and clank CIT greater than TOD
4. Killzone 3 looks amazing, very close to besting Killzone 2

Now just imagine 3 years ahead. I am already drooling folks :S

dangert125285d ago

uncharted 3 is better then 2 i think he ment

despair5285d ago

@Rashid Sayed

KZ3 already topped KZ2 at least from what I've played in beta and seen in vids.

ULTIMATE_REVENGE5285d ago (Edited 5285d ago )

R&C: ACiT does not look better than R&C: TOD. Yes the art style is now a CGI/Cell Shaded hybrid and the character detail did look somewhat better, but overall I wasn't that impressed. I thought they would work on TOD art style and improve and expand on it, but they never did, so it was either a choice or a hardware limitation that caused change.

If you look at how metallic & chrome objects shined in TOD and then compare it to ACiT, you'll see how much better TOD looks than ACiT, not to mention that R&C: ACiT is the first game in the series that I haven't fully 101% completed.

halocursed5285d ago

Whoa the character models look so much better.

dragonyght5285d ago

"Resistance 2 was a huge leap from Fall of Man" visually yes gameplay and online was a draw back it has lost its originality gameplay wise and was limited online compare to fall of man

MidnytRain5285d ago (Edited 5285d ago )

While I enjoyed both games thoroughly, I thought the multiplayer in R2 was miles ahead of FoM. FoM's online was boring and shallow for me. The co-op in R2 has me hooked. But while both games are great, I think the biggest problem is that Insomniac Games made too many changes.
-No campaign co-op
-No narration with 50's-styled photographs
-Fully regenerative health. To balance this out, you have less health, so that means less one-man army shootouts that were popular in FoM
-Saturated color palette=less gritty feel
-Almost-always-present friendlies that eliminated the lonely, desperate, overwhelming feeling and make Hale seem less important
-Too-familiar enviornments that aren't claustrophobic and feel less mysterious and adventurous to the target audience in America than the British locations
-No weapon wheel that robs players of creative freedom
-Confusing story progression; events are not always explained well

I loved the game, though. Also, I don't about you guys, but due to the new default control scheme, the Faireye was awkward to use. It required me to use my index and middle fingers on my right hand simultaneously to slow down time and take a shot.

Corepred45285d ago

"I thought the multiplayer in R2 was miles ahead of FoM. FoM's online was boring and shallow for me. The co-op in R2 has me hooked."

The multiplayer in R2 sucked so bad! Ive been hearing alot of people say they like R2's multiplayer only to immediately bring up co-op. Co-op is co-op i think most of us that are saying R2's multiplayer sucked are talking about the team deathmatch part of online not co-op. I miss Resistance FOM multiplayer sooo much! = (

Kalowest5285d ago (Edited 5285d ago )

I like R1 more than i like R2, but both are great games.

Resistance 3 is a Classic, 13 Years On

Insomniac Games' thunderous conclusion to its acclaimed first-person shooter series remains an under-appreciated work of art.

Sony needs to remake the trilogy on ps5

CrimsonWing69230d ago

I’d rather them do a new game in the world of Resistance.

Cacabunga230d ago (Edited 230d ago )

I honestly liked the first one most..
killzone 2 and 3 outshined Resistance 2 and 3 for me in every aspect.

Eonjay230d ago

I absolutely adored Resistance 3 but they do not NEED to remake this game. They should do something that they enjoy and if it is Resistance then so be it.

Mr_cheese230d ago

Loved resistance 3, played the whole thing on co op with the move controller and gun, was very different!

Resistance 2 online was the best

gamerz230d ago

Me too, but also on a 3D tv! R3 was one of the few games that got plastic rifle panning motion right.

isarai230d ago

Such a criminally underrated series, id love a remaster collection of the trilogy.

preciousdeath230d ago

Yes! ...and make them PSVR2 compatible.

Pedrof230d ago

Not a classic in my opinion ; a pretty mediocre PS3 shooter as far as I'm concerned, not bad, not the worst of the trilogy, but certainly not great. Killzone 2 was miles ahead of it (and of most FPSs even today as far as I'm concerned).

pwnmaster3000230d ago

Naw man.
Resistance 1 will always be GOATed for me.
I remember playing all night on multiplayer. Such a fun game.

P_Bomb230d ago

Ah yeah, R1! I cut my teeth on the one-shot Walmart map, lol! Miss that.

gamerz230d ago

Played that demo soooooo many damn times since it was the only thing to play for a while at launch. That and motorstorm.

refocusedman230d ago

killzone was amazing but resistance was great as well. althpugh theybwrre both fps, I think that served different purposes.

JEECE230d ago

Thanks for turning Insomniac into a Marvel studio.

ApocalypseShadow230d ago (Edited 230d ago )

Although I agree on original games and creativity over licensed IP, especially something like Ghost of Tsushima. But Sony's looking at that series selling less and less overall with the 3rd estimated to not even sell 2 million. Gamers who say they loved it didn't really buy it.

While Spiderman the series has sold over 50 million not counting PC. And Spider-Man 2 is over 11 million so far. If you had their business and had to make their decisions, what would you do in their shoes?

JEECE230d ago

@ApocalypseShadow

Umm, that's exactly my point lol. Insomniac made great, original IP games and people didn't buy them because they were too busy lapping up yearly CODs and Assassin's Creeds, so naturally Sony/Insomniac had to pivot to something else.

Knushwood Butt230d ago

So you are saying 1 was the worst?
I respect your opinion but strongly disagree.

I'll start with what I didn't like about 3:
- OK, Nathan Hale is gone but new player character totally forgettable. Can't even remember their name.
- Awful forced in 3D. Just look at KZ3 for 3D done well.
- Online multiplayer that paled in comparison to 1 and 2. Put hundreds of hours into the first two. Probably less than 10 hours into 3.
- Campaign was OK but I played the other two more, especially 1.

Pedrof229d ago

1 had my favorite gunplay of the trilogy (no need for COD iron sight) so I guess my worst would be 2. At least 3 wrapped up the storyline, supported the move controller and had prettier graphics. But in my book, none of the three really stood out. From that era, I prefered Singularity for example and obviously Killzone 2.

Video Game Franchises in Danger of Being Forgotten

The gaming industry moves at such a pace that it’s not surprising we’ve seen countless franchises fall into obscurity over the years.

Im surprised that a game with a heritage of Medal of Honor is in this list.

cthulhucultist232d ago

There is a rumour that Driver 1 & 2 remasters will be released for Switch and presumably for other systems as well.

https://www.gamingbible.com...

Not sure however whether this results into new games in the near future.

HellspawnPR1981232d ago

Ninja Gaiden? Splinter Cell? Tenchu? Virtua Fighter? Killer Instinct? Killzone?

DefenderOfDoom2232d ago

I would very much enjoy
a new dedicated single player Killzone campaign. With a fun multi-player.

cthulhucultist232d ago

Tenchu and Killer Instict would be great indeed!

Unfortunately new Killzone game does not seem to be in the works

Virtua Fighter is going to receive a new entry!

https://www.dualshockers.co...

Splinter Cell is likely to be one of the remasters launching next year (not sure whether this has to do anything with the remake previously announced)

https://toronto.ubisoft.com...

HellspawnPR1981232d ago

Yeah, read the news about a new Virtua Fighter and I am so ready for it. Splinter Cell at this point I don't believe anything Ubisoft says plus I don't think modern day Ubisoft can make a decent stealth game. They will likely fuck it up.

Inverno232d ago

Basically everything at this point as companies have no concern with preservation.

It’s Time for Sony to Bring Back Killzone and Resistance

Sony is in the middle of an FPS crisis, but bringing back two much-loved PlayStation shooters could easily be the solution.

shinoff2183388d ago

I'd rather them focus on a rpg. Shooters can wait

just_looken388d ago

We have alot of rpg's but only cod for a AAA first person shooter unless you toss in xdefient but that is still fixing 2yr old beta issues.

We need more AAA fps games then rpg's

shinoff2183388d ago

Yea right. Theirs so many shooters on the market.

just_looken388d ago

@shin

Name 3 AAA fps games coming out this year

Cacabunga388d ago

I want Killzone yea, but as a gaas no buy!

Cacabunga387d ago

Yes we need some new FPS experiences.. COD is just not engaging enough. We want a Killzone back to the roots, not a Shadow Fall again..

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 387d ago
Crows90388d ago

There's tons of RPG in the market too...what's your point exactly.

RaidenBlack388d ago

No Killzone or Resistance or Factions for you ... only Concord & FairGame$

Ironmike388d ago

No more rpg for a while would love a new resistance though

DarXyde388d ago

Agree on preferring RPGs though at this exact moment, it would be great to see more horror games. Another reason why Japan Studio closing is just tragic. Loved Siren.

just_looken388d ago (Edited 388d ago )

Fuck jim ryan japan studio did so much and helped alot with ports/localization

If they were around bloodborn would be possible like how they helped with demon souls ps4 finial fantasy port.

Horror games would be nice but the jim ryan axe job helped alot in killing playstation dev numbers/freedom and increased regulation with the new censorship crap.

1Victor388d ago

If Sony is bringing back a old shooter I would prefer Warhawk or better yet Starhawk

Rynxie388d ago

No thanks. Resistance and killzone were my all time favorite fps games. I completely dominated those games. I met good people, had a ton of fun and have a lot of fond memories. I don't want them to bring back these games, unless they tackle the cheating epidemic. I know I will absolutely hate these games, if I was to play them now, with all the effing cheating going on in fps games.

Psychonaut85388d ago

Bro the market is oversaturated with quality RPGs AND bloated shitty RPGs already.

+ Show (4) more repliesLast reply 387d ago
Inverno388d ago

I honestly don't think we'll be seeing these anytime soon, if ever. Insomniac is officially on Marvel duty since it seems that all they're working on based off the leaks, and Horizon is more of what the casuals want these days. And I now I'll get a bunch of disagrees, but keep in mind that Resistance last got a game on the PS3 (2011) and Killzone was a launch title for the PS4 (2013). 10 years is a long time to make a game, if had any interest they would've done it by now, add InFamous to that list.

just_looken388d ago (Edited 388d ago )

Your right except the dates killzone mercenary was on ps vita 2013 same with resistance burning skies back in 2012

Good-Smurf388d ago

Both of those games are either made by smaller B team or completely different developer.
Killzone Mercenary developed by Guerilla Cambridge which is now defunct.
Resistamce Burning Skies wasn't made by Insomniac but by Nihilistic Software also defunct after the failure of CoD Black Ops Declassified.

just_looken388d ago

@good i know i never said they were

I mentioned them as they were the last games under that ip well killzone was last on ps4 but still even though they are different devs they led to the lose of the ip.

I highly doubt they made up for there budget cost even killzone on ps4 had low sales for such a large ip at the time.

shinoff2183388d ago

Infamous should atleast get remastered. I'd be cool with that

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH388d ago

Resistance 3 turned me off to the series but I’d love a reboot. KillZone I think can stay dead. Give me a new Resistance like 1or 2 and I’ll be happy.

JEECE388d ago

Except Resistance 1 and 3 were far more similar, 2 was the outlier. 3 was a great return to form after 2 changed so many things from the first game.

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH388d ago

I didn’t like 3 and I didn’t find it similar to the first game.

Moegooner388d ago

2 was the best resistance game.

Michiel1989388d ago

agreed, the co-op was my fav in 2

Michiel1989388d ago

I'll keep saying it, have Bungie make a new resistance game, a match made in heaven. Although I imagine Bungie would be too proud to take over an existing IP.

Huey_My_D_Long388d ago

I honestly never cared or liked killzone. Huge resistance fan though. I remember so many nights playing melee only on USS Lexington, and I like the alt history vibe.

InUrFoxHole388d ago

Liked KZ more but both those games are better than MAG

Huey_My_D_Long388d ago

Facts.
Since I'm down memory lane, I also wish for remaster of Warhawk.

P_Bomb388d ago

I’ve been barking up that tree for years. 😢

OtterX388d ago

Keep barking, boy! Keep barking! Never give up hope. ;)
