There weren’t all that many unique weapons in the older Fallout games but upon release of Fallout 3 they became a much more prominent part of the game. Almost any given unique weapon was a good deal better than its more common available variants. As such it was almost always in your best interest to find some of the unique weapons as soon as possible so that you’d have an advantage against the various things that wanted to kill you in the Capital Wasteland (i.e. everything).

This is what I loved the most about Fallout 3 and New Vegas. They felt like side missions in their own little way.
I remember in Fallout 3 when I first got it, I searched for all of them and when I finally did it I realised I still had all the main missions to do and side ones aswell :)
Hopefully they'll have some in Skyrim instead of just finding things randomly in chests, maybe a Unique staff in a wizards tower with high leveled zombies and skeletons....that sort of thing.
