First Successful Playstation Firmware Downgrade From 3.55 To 3.41 By KaKaRoTo

KaKaRoTo who recently released the first custom firmware for the PS3 has successfully downgraded the playstation firmware from 3.55 to 3.41. This is amazing because with the recent update Sony blocked the hack which allowed players to play copied games. Kakaroto’s method will allow PS3 owners, who have upgraded their PS3s to the latest firmware to downgrade it back to 3.41, thus enabling them to use the hack again. However there is still risk to brick the PS3 so he is not revealing the method quiet yet. As soon as the method is perfected, it will be revealed for all to avail. Stay tuned for more info as the hack becomes available online.

Downgrading the PS3 firmware is an upgrade, so this is good news :)

deadreckoning6663470d ago (Edited 3470d ago )

Okay, now I'm impressed. Very exciting stuff.

"Hope everyone that does this bricks their damn ps3 that will teach them."

U mad?

"This forces Sony into giving us new features in the updates. Features that we want. They either do it or they're compromised.

Now if Sony wants us to upgrade our units to their latest firmware they have to give us a reason to do so. Those reasons will have to be better than what the hackers are offering."

DING DING DING DING! Finally...a man of logic!

This is a huge win for the consumer and you blind loyalist just can't see it.

SoapShoes3470d ago

Really? More like it forces them to focus on security and less on new features.

MajestieBeast3470d ago

I see your still releasing brainfarts.

Christopher3470d ago (Edited 3470d ago )

***Now if Sony wants us to upgrade our units to their latest firmware they have to give us a reason to do so. Those reasons will have to be better than what the hackers are offering." ***

So, all the stuff they've added so far isn't enough let alone all for free, we're greedy arsed bastards and we deserve more even though your competitor charges for anything that even thinks about going online. Let alone the fact that with the competitor the _only_ way you get anything new is by paying them for it.

Excellent logic.

RememberThe3573470d ago (Edited 3470d ago )

I see what your saying but cgoodno has a really good point. We have gotten everything from Sony for free, yet your logic is that is not enough. Thats a greedy and broken logic.

At this point I wouldn't be surprised if Sony started a service similar to Gold. They have to do something to increase their revenue through the PSN. I can see PSN+ getting a ton of features after E3. They really need to make that program more enticing.

Anon19743470d ago (Edited 3470d ago )

"Now if Sony wants us to upgrade our units to their latest firmware they have to give us a reason to do so. Those reasons will have to be better than what the hackers are offering."

Ok, so play all the latest games, blu-ray and connect to PSN with Sony's latest firmware plus enjoy all the other stuff Sony has constantly been adding to the PS3, or downgrade and play some homebrew with a hack.

Der! What should I do? It's such a tough decision. I mean, with homebrew I could run a N64 emulator like on a PC, or run Linux like on a PC, or install a Gameboy emulator like on the PC, or run some independent game someone made in their Mom's basement like on the PC. Wait a minute - I can do all those things on my PC. The only thing that this hack does on my PS3 that I can't do on my PC is become a filthy dirty pirate of PS3 games and screw the people and their families out of being paid for their hard work in an economy where no one's jobs are safe.

Yeah, thanks hackers, but no thanks. You all play minecraft on your PS3 instead of your PC, pat yourselves on the back on pretend like you're not hurting the entire industry by enabling piracy.

Douche-bags.

FACTUAL evidence3470d ago

@deadreckoning666

Too bad you can't hack your ps3. Gotta own one first.

vanquisher3470d ago (Edited 3470d ago )

deadreckoning666 & M4ndat0ry_1nstall are like Batman and Robin, a tag team on PS3 posts

Edite:Almost missed ChristianGamer down there, the big fanboy trinity all here now.

thereapersson3470d ago

Well, since the PS3 is the only console whose exclusive games can begin to match PC games in regards to visual fidelity, it's only natural that hackers would want to further extend the PS3's use as a PC.

Mahr3470d ago

"Wait a minute - I can do all those things on my PC."

Yeah, playing fan translations of PS3 games, backing up games, playing PS3 games from an HDD to minimize load times, playing region free PS1 games, region free PS2 games, watching region free Bluray, backing up the PS3 boot software to make it functionally brick-proof... all of these things can be done on the PC!

oh wait no they can't

"The only thing that this hack does on my PS3 that I can't do on my PC is become a filthy dirty pirate of PS3 games and screw the people and their families out of being paid for their hard work in an economy where no one's jobs are safe."

Factually untrue. Do you believe that misrepresenting the situation will help make the PS3 secure again? Or that you can prevent people from modding their systems if only you muster enough self-righteous indignation?

"You all play minecraft on your PS3 instead of your PC, pat yourselves on the back on pretend like you're not hurting the entire industry by enabling piracy"

And you can continue to cry over spilled milk and pretend that doing so brings something substantive to the table.

I would call you a hacker who likes to borrow games and then copy them, or a used game buyer, but I don't really care that much to insult trolls (well actually it depends on my mood, sometimes I give them a spanking, tonight I will not write 3 paragraphs on why you come onto the internet to troll, so goodnight.)

Dart893470d ago (Edited 3470d ago )

Hope everyone that does this bricks their damn ps3 that will teach them.

Edit:Damn 3 disagrees under 5 min sum people are desperate for this crap lol.

VINNIEPAZ3470d ago (Edited 3470d ago )

What "crap"? You really have no idea what you can do on an open system. Only thing that pops in ya frightened heads is, "Oh NoEZ teh [email protected] IZ CominG!!!1!!!"

Yea you can pirate games, but also a ton of other stuff. Give it a rest.

EDIT - Dart89 - "Don't tell me you're one of those desperate people for this kinda crap?"

LOL Look man, throwing words like "desperate" is not gonna sway anyone in your favor. "Oh look! he said the other guy was desperate! That must be whats going on here!"

It really just shows how scared you are and your defense is to blow things out of proportion as if doing so will blind us from the facts. So sad, dont be scared lil man...

Dart893470d ago (Edited 3470d ago )

Don't tell me you're one of those desperate people for this kinda crap?

Edit:@Chidori " If they cared we would have already gotten cross game voice chat." Why is everyone obsessed with getting this feature if you want it so bad just buy a damn xbox.

"so stop being a loyalist to this corporation that only wants your $, they dont care about us."
Yea i'm pretty sure they don't care about us so i'm guessing all the exclusives coming out this year means sony ain't caring for us?

Sharingan_no_Kakashi3470d ago

"Only thing that pops in ya frightened heads is, "Oh NoEZ teh [email protected] IZ CominG!!!1!!!"

And the only thing that pops into your head is "YEEAAA CUSTOM FIRMWAREZZZZZ"

I can completely understand wanting your own custom firmware but you people give no thought to the fact that spreading your little hack secrets across the web lands it in the hands of people who will use it to hack and pirate video games.

Christopher3470d ago

***Yea you can pirate games, but also a ton of other stuff. Give it a rest. ***

Yeah, all the same stuff you can do on any computer and don't need to do on a PS3. But, because hackers want to 'open' everything up, they open wide the door to all the problems with their desire to not be happy with their current devices that already do what they want their PS3 to do.

I'll never understand 'hackers'. I understand curiosity and I understand the drive to understand technology. But their logic for wanting to knowingly open the door for people to abuse the technology that companies make for them to explore? It's like GameStop surviving on second-hand game sales which do nothing to support the development teams who allow them to bring in all the money that they do.

hesido3470d ago

Hacked PSP's can do loads, but, gaming took a hit. Anybody who claims otherwise isn't thinking clearly. I bought my Ps3 to play games. Rampant piracy will hurt PS3 gaming. Sure, you will be able to control your coffee machine with it. That's so good. But games will take a hit, as they will start to employ extra DRM (Is the bluray in, is the firmware OK, etc etc), which will create more bugs, which may even lessen the overall performance of the game.

joeorc3470d ago

hey great attitude how about this:

just post your IP adress to everyone on line:
your Name
your Email address
and these hacker's will give you what you want...because that's what you are exactly trusting your PS3 with.

who am i kidding they will just take it with a Key logger. or some other Spoof.

lol your quite the open person so trusting

not only that but remember they said "ANY ASSIGNED CODE" that anyone can make!

you helping them with your personal info will help them greatly in making sure there is great Homebrew out there for everyone..lol

ElementX3470d ago

Seriously, people who spell things like "Oh NoEZ teh [email protected] IZ CominG!" really need to stop. Noez, teh, noob, and all that stuff is annoying.

I see this as a good thing for sony, it will boost sales up. Hope they get the entire procedure down in the next years to come. Also they are hacking it just to bring back the "OS Feature". so stop being a loyalist to this corporation that only wants your $, they dont care about us. They just want your money.
If they cared we would have already gotten cross game voice chat.

Nitrowolf23470d ago

" Also they are hacking it just to bring back the "OS Feature""
then why are they trying to have it so you can downgrade? Why not just wait till the other team releases other OS for current console rather then allow you run unsign/sign codes of PKG made by people????????

commander3470d ago

selling more consoles is not their main focus. Sony makes more off of game sales then console sales.

theaceh3470d ago

This will only hurt gaming. I can see sony including a "bit by bit" Firmware Comparator on every new blu-ray game. Sorry guys, but more loading times ahead.

Thanks a lot Hackers.... uhh I mean, Crackers

catguykyou3470d ago

woh woh woh. I thought the PS3 couldn't and wouldn't be hacked for years and years to come if ever. Now I hear different. What changed?

Balt 3470d ago (Edited 3470d ago )

Why is this such a bad thing? Wake up, people!!!! Or should I say, SHEEP!!!!????

This puts Sony's back against the wall. They are now forced to do or die. This forces Sony into giving us new features in the updates. Features that we want. They either do it or they're compromised.

Now if Sony wants us to upgrade our units to their latest firmware they have to give us a reason to do so. Those reasons will have to be better than what the hackers are offering.

This is a huge win for the consumer and you blind loyalist just can't see it.

SoapShoes3470d ago

Use your brain...

1) It forces Sony to work harder on security and less on new features.

2) Since when has adding new features ever convinced a pirate to upgrade to official firmware? lmao!!

Ch1d0r13470d ago

If sony cared about giving us features they had 3-4 years before the system was hacked to do so. Might as well let the homebrew community do it. Like it said before homebrew will help sony sell more consoles. If you want features plug a computer or laptop to your 60' inch LCD.

SoapShoes3470d ago (Edited 3470d ago )

@Ch

Don't be ridiculous! It doesn't matter how many features that Sony adds, it would never be enough and you'd still have people trying to hack it. If we did get Cross game chat, it'd be another feature people demanded and used to justify hacking. Don't even act like Sony doesn't want the PS3 to evolve feature wise, that's the reason they added firmware in the first place.

AnonUser55553470d ago

Far be it for me to support hacking, but lets not pretend Sony has been working all that hard on "new features." How long have we wanted a proper party system?

They were busy making Home when all a majority of gamers want is crossgame chat.

HappyGaming3470d ago

Do the same people who make PS3 secure work on new things like extra channels under the TV section, better XMB layouts or new games?

I didn't think so.

Will those people be paid an amount that is worth you crying about to fix this?

Probably no more than 2-3 million the cost of a couple of TV adverts.

Pull your head out of your asses the people working to finance Sony are probably less stressed than you are.

UnSelf3470d ago

what if all Sony decides to do now is spend all there time and resources tryna to enhance the ps3's security?

Kewl_Kat3470d ago

@UnSelf
I agree with your comment, and I'm pretty sure I replied to Balt. =]

HappyGaming3470d ago

That won't happen it is not the first time a console gets hacked and I am sure not everyone in Sony works or even has the know how to work in the security department.

Kewl_Kat3470d ago

You mean just like how Nintendo is forced to introduce new features after getting hacked? Where's the feature that lets games be played off an external hard drive? How about the feature that lets the Wii play movies from a usb stick? Those never happened. Just because a console or any device is hacked doesn't mean the company who made it is now going to start implementing new features. In the end of the day, what you mostly get from hacking these devices is piracy. How many notable homebrew games and programs are out there for the Wii, PSP, DS, or 360? My friends have hacked 360s, and every single one of them have stacks of discs of pirated games, and not one of them spent time with homebrew. Remember the Other OS issue? Did Sony ever released another alternative to that with their latest update? Nope.

UnSelf3470d ago

all i said was what if

if u ask me Sony's track record thus far as far as implementing new features are concerned have been more than satisfactory

Nitrowolf23470d ago (Edited 3470d ago )

So i have a question. Hackers are complaining this was because Sony took away feature (linux) and yet here they make it possible to downgrade (loose a few feature) and yet they already have (or soon) a CFW 3.55 with Linux enabled (no unsign support), and yet they also complain that they don't support piracy and yet here we are again being able to run unsign codes, so then wtf are these hackers b1tching about then if they are doing exactly what they didn't want to do and also are taking away some features?

tunaks13470d ago

im sure different hackers have different opinions.

Nitrowolf23470d ago (Edited 3470d ago )

well thats the funny thing

this same guy Kakartoto said he wants to keep piracy off
http://kakaroto.homelinux.n...
and yet here he wants to enable unsign codes, so that means backup manager, would that mean pirating then?

tunaks13470d ago (Edited 3470d ago )

wouldn't they need unsigned code to run homebrew apps and homebrew games.

The wii's homebrew community brought more then piracy. Getting shoutcastTv streams, navix streams. Alot more then just pirating.

Nitrowolf23470d ago

Not when they claim that they can sign them. In the current CFW or first it doesn't allow backup games to be played even if Backup manager became sign.

Ch1d0r13470d ago

This new exploit enables people with the latest FW to downgrade, which was not possible before. There is nothing in the article about pirating games. Did we read the same article??

Nitrowolf23470d ago (Edited 3470d ago )

the main reason why they released a CFW that couldn't read Unsign code was to stop backup manager. Even if they signed it, it wouldn't work sine the lv2dr or whatever isn't affected. Since it can be downgraded it's using LV2dr whatever it is, which is what Backup manager uses.Geohotz is working on a FW that can read Unsign Codes. Now allowing unsign codes would mean BM can be run then correct? Then wouldn't that mean what they have said that they wanted to prevent mean that it's no longer prevented?
