Reasons why PC Gaming isn’t dead in 2011 – Part 1

Simon from NAGF writes: "So here we are in 2011 – another sparkly New Year and PC gaming is still chugging along in the wake of those shiny consoles with their spanking new motion controllers and glistening awards.

"But in this article and my others beyond it, I’m going to be highlighting reasons why PC gaming’s time is far from over, and how this year is going to see it thrash console gaming into submission."

The only real innovation IS PC gaming.

simonm3209d ago

i could not agree more.

The first game to actually make use of it was GOD OF WAR 3 on the PS3...a console....and they made it work with the Cell Processor.

The Cell Processor, even today, is the one CPU that can process the most Flops, even outdoing the greatest i7 chip.

I'm just saying.....innovation can be found in lots of things...consoles included.

@Persistantthug

MLAA is not an innovation...is blurs the entire scene in order to hide aliasing...if you think degrading image quality is innovative then you need to introduce your palm to your face. Covering a carpet stain with a disgusting rug is still $#!+ to look at. Same thing with MLAA. The blur is just as bad as the aliasing.

Tflops is also theoretical peak performance...aka something that is irrelevant for real world use, in other words every single aspect of the hardware from shaders to memory bandwidth needs to be 100% saturated AND coded to 100% perfection to even get anywhere near those results, Tflops is based on an equaltion of the specs that is never achievable.

Also on PC the AA is done on the GPU....a gtx580 has 1581.1 gfops of THEORETICAL peak performance.

I am running 32csaa and a 8TRSAA in 99% of my games, and you think a post processing blur effect is innovative...

I would liken MLAA to the plastic cases Steve Jobs offered when everyones iPhone 4's started to die from poor design...a cheap solution to a crippling hardware flaw...is not innovative, it is called 'settling for less'.

Doom 3 in 2003 had an in game option of 16AA....here we are in 2011, with console games that still don't even have MSAA...almost 10 years on and still half the res with even less visual features, now that's innovation!!!

Console gamer am fail.

There's been no better use of MLAA than that of what Sony Santa Monica did.

And again, they did it on the Cell Processor.

God Of War 3 looks gorgeous, btw.

GoW3 looks great, no denying that.
However, MLAA isn't exactly an innovation that is due to the excellence of PS3's hardware, rather, it's the opposite.

PS3 developers have no doubt come up with many ingenious ways of getting their games to look and perform as well as they do. However, that innovation mostly deals with getting the game to run on a specific hardware.
Though there still are a few innovative games such as LPB. Consoles aren't exactly a barren land for innovation. ;)

are you implying that GoW3 looks like $#!+?? if so, then you're $#!+ yourself! I know PC is more powerful and stuff and it's not even close to dying anytime soon but there's no action adventure/hack&slash game on any platform that looks better than GoW3, period! no denying that!

The jumps that PC games take each year or two usually take a console one generation to make.

I'm not saying consoles are bad 4 gaming, no.. hardly.. considering I'm a primary a console gamer myself.
But there are some games that you just HAVE to play on PC.
I'm glad I invested some of my $$ last year into upgrading my rig.
Sure I lost a game or two on consoles.. but hey, no regrets.

And not to mention crazy games like minecraft, it may not be much visually.. but it's just.. crazy good >.<
