PS3A Writer’s Game of The Year: What Is It You Seek From Gaming?

PS3Attitude writes: "Sometimes, there are games you can always go back to no matter what. Even though Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, Bayonetta, and God of War III are all awesome, they never fully satisfied my needs as a gamer. There was just something missing and they all felt too familiar. Unique experiences like Heavy Rain are great and all, but it’s not exactly what I’m looking for in a game. Is it a must have? Absolutely. There’s only so much you can get from Heavy Rain though, and that’s a problem when you want more.

This year, there was one game that went beyond pushing buttons, understanding an intriguing story, or simply having fun. It became something far more significant, shaping the way I think, the things I want to do, and provided experiences that are both nostalgic and new at the same time. That game was Super Street Fighter IV, my 2010 Game of the Year."

I look for a game that gives me this certain euphoric feeling. After I completed GOW3, the entire following week I felt like I was on cloud nine. The experience I had was so mind blowing, I just felt ecstatic the next week. Its something I'll never forget. Few games have ever matched that feeling I had. Demon's Souls did it when I finally got that platinum trophy, and Shadow of the Colossus did it when I slayed the final beast.

I look for games that can cause a whirlwind of emotions, good or bad. It rarely happens, but when it does its incredible. It just goes to show how mature and enveloping games have become that they can create so many different emotions.

I like this. Sadly, there weren't too many games that did that for me this year. God of War III was quite overwhelming though. I need to sit down and play that game from start to finish.

I really liked Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. Despite its flaws, it captured Spidey quite well and was fun to play.

The only game this year that really gave me any sort of strong emotions from the game itself was Heavy Rain. I played through it all in one sitting, not knowing what to expect next. It was quite a ride. One of those games you wish you could forget just so you could experience it all over again for the first time.

I know exactly what you mean. That whirlwind of emotions is what I refer to as artistic merit. The most memorable scene/level for me in God of War III was when Hera was getting shit faced. I could literally feel her depression as I looked on the ruined landscape: all of which our hand caused. Now that's depth!

No game has ever made me feel that way. And yes, while rare, it makes it all the more worth it. For those that played the God of War Collection shortly before God of War III, you probably know exactly what I'm talking about.

I'd recommend a couple other games, that, while not offering the same experience per se, offer equally appealing and diverse experiences in their own right. Heavy Rain being the forefront. After that, I'd probably say Mass Effect 2, Alan Wake, Bayonetta, and Vanquish. That's just from this year alone. If 2011 is anything like 2010, I think we're all in for a treat.

I'm looking for a game with the following

Single Player:
A great experience with memorable character that you feel connected to and when they get hurt you feel their pain. I also want a story that you can keep coming back to and feel refreshed every time. Preferably with great graphics and gameplay too.

Multiplayer:
A great community and great elements that make it stand out from other games. And something that you never get tired of.

Sadly though, uncharted 2 and infamous are the only games that have met these expectation, minus the "keep going back to the story" thing but i do enjoy watching people playing uncharted. Hopefully uncharted 3 will satisfy these things. Although, i haven't played many games this generation so i am slightly biased towards these games, any body have some recommendations for games with these elements (doesn't have to have the multiplayer) that are ps3 exclusives?

Actually, the article is pretty good (IMHO) although I personally have never really liked pure fighting games. I do however like the Souls and Bloodborne series and am quite reasonable playing them although I could "git bttr". 😉

I swear by Injustice being the most accessible fighting game out there. Play Injustice!

JackGash2916d ago

Injustice is a very accessible fighting game, It takes the mechanics of MK9 and expands on them in interesting ways. I would say Injustice and Mortal Kombat are among the more accessible.

10 Legendary Video Game Myths That Fooled Us All

Maybe these myths are a way of injecting some mystery and fascination into games that we’ve become so familiar with. Perhaps we’re desperate to recapture how we once felt when first playing through them; deluding ourselves into believing that there’s more to experience – even though deep down we know we’ve seen it all.

Alternatively, there’s the reality that growing up, we were just a lot more susceptible to rumours and hoaxes than we are now. Yeah, that’s probably it – there’s no way these things would fly today. Everyone knows the alien in GTA V’s forest is real anyway.
