Rumour: Sony Ericsson PlayStation Phone to be called 'Xperia Play'?

We've been hoodwinked by trademark filing and domain registrations before (cough, BlackPad and SurfBook) so we wouldn't say this is anywhere near definite, but we just caught wind of a Sony Ericsson EU trademark registration for "Xperia Play," and SE PR firm Jung Relations has registered a variety of Xperia Play domain names, including, .net, and .org.

Yes, that certainly sounds like a promising name for the PlayStation Phone (although not quite as promising as, you know, "PlayStation Phone,") but honestly we wouldn't bet on anything at this point. We've got a feeling we'll either find out either at CES or at MWC in February -- hold on tight.

they should put a phone in the psp2 and not the other way around.

It has nothing to do with the playstation brand or the division of sony that it has something to do with the playstation brand so of course they arent putting it in the name.

The phone is a phone first and a gaming device in distant second. From everythign weve seen its no more or less powerful than a psp. And really not meant for hardcore gaming (games priced at 10 dollars or less, classics)

The psp 2 is sony's next big handheld. With physical dual analog, insanely powerful, touch track gimmick on the back, physical medium (memory sticks)

Yeah the benchmark video was really lame. If this thing can't even keep up with current phones how could it call itself a gaming phone?

i agree this phone is made by sony ericsson not sony playstation. the fact it looks like a psp is to give, and im speculating, it make easier to play while taking advantage of the playstation brand, which isn't bad since playstation>ericsson.

i don't know why nitwits think this is the psp2 which btw has been rumored to have a different alias. not to mention different specs

edit: i would like to define what i mean by take advantage of the playstation brand. the dont really use the name, as their not affiliated with playstation directly, instead they use the psp style and use it for phone, which isn't really basd at all.

sony's psp2 is sonys next handheld that will fall at the hands of the 3DS FACT..

mcstorm2948d ago

If it is to do with the Playstation the name dose not work for it the should call it the PlaystationX like we have the x10 ect from SE.

BattleAxe2948d ago

They should use the Playstation branding, wtf is xperia?

Jellzy2948d ago

1 of Sony Ericsson's mobile ranges.

They should steer well clear of using the PS brand IMO. It's first and foremost a phone and if we're being honest it isn't really a powerful one at that.

I doubt it was ever intended to be a PS phone, and engadget and fanboy's made the assumption that cause it was from Sony it was.

A lot of people want a PlayStation Phone. I'm one of them. I'd love to see it happen, but what I've seen so far is pretty lame. Hopefully when they officially reveal it it will be more impressive, but I doubt it.

Right, if they are going to attach the Playstation brand to a phone then it had better be head and shoulders above every other phone out there with regards to gaming.

Better controls are not sufficient, they also need better graphics and better games. If they can't do that then they are much better off sticking to the Xperia brand and leave the Playstation brand for the

Actually been eyeing up some of the xperia range. Might wait a little longer.
