Xbox 360 Leads Online Play, Wii Users Spend 20% Of Time On Streaming Content

The current console generation has brought game systems major strides closer to becoming living room "hubs", letting users interact with all kinds of media from streaming music to video rentals and Blu-ray discs. But while PlayStation 3 users spend a bigger share of their time on the system on multimedia, Xbox 360 users play online games more.

From my own experience, I own both an XBox 360 and a PS3 and use my PS3 for Blu ray movies and content streaming and buy a number of multiplatform games on the XBox 360 simply because I have more friends on that console who play the same time I do and communicate. If that's the case for many, that would explain the findings. I suppose it probably is.

Trytobee15302d ago

If your using your PS3 for content steaming, then i hope your wired, cause you wont be seeing anything in HD using PS3's wireless-G

Thats another advantage Xbox has now ...
the option of using wireless-N for streaming movies and Netflix in HD.

TroyAndAbed5302d ago

I'm using wi-fi on my PS3 and the HD streaming is flawless on both Netflix and VUDU.

Cevapi885302d ago

i guess he's never heard of PS3 Media Server

madjedi5302d ago

@try Too bad it took ms 4 yr to include wireless in the console vs ps3's and countless other devices have had built-in wireless for yrs.

You know your side is hurting for pros when wireless g is a bragging point, when did the 360 guys run out of real talking points?

Trytobee1, last name isn't dumbass by any chance is it?

Koolno5302d ago

"Thats another advantage Xbox has now ..."

Lol, one of the rares ones..

Nineball21125302d ago

@ TroyAndAbed

Same here. I'm also using the wireless on my PS3 at the moment and I've had zero issues with Netflix or VUDU.

Seems about right. It's obvious that the PS3 is going to have a higher movie watching percentage because of blu-ray. And It's obvious that more people are going to play online on 360 because they have to pay for that privilege and want to get their moneys worth.

kaveti66165302d ago

playing online shouldn't be a privilege.

If you pay 65 bucks for a game that has both a single player and a multiplayer mode, then you shouldn't have to pay an extra fee to access the mode that you paid for.

obviously, the idea of ownership goes over the heads of companies but whatever.

I play 360 more because of friends and Halo.

Wenis5302d ago

Or maybe its because Xbox Live is just that good.

kaveti66165302d ago

I have it. It's not any better than PSN. Better presentation, that's it. In terms of multiplayer performance and lag, they are the same.

RememberThe3575302d ago

People pay for Live because of the social experience. The party feature is what I see my friends use the most. Like kevet said, It's no better than the PSN in terms of lag and stuff like that but what the PSN is missing are the things that people on Live use the most. Namely, the party system.

Koolno5302d ago

Home say hello "remember"..

and games have party systems..

RememberThe3575302d ago

"and games have party systems.. "

It's just easier on the 360. You don't need the game to support a party system because Live does it already.

And the social aspect of live is almost completely different than Home.

for this survey... I mean they never asked me. All I do is play games on my PS3 & watch a [vg] trailer every now & again - I don't watch a lot of movies or dumb TV shows...plus most of my online friends are always playing games as well & there are a lot of them. Wii online players outpacing PS3 users..? Sounds like a bit of a whopper really.

Yeah I'm a bit skeptical about these findings as a realistic snapshot.

Dac2u5302d ago

I think you're reading it wrong, it shows the PS3 has 46% playing online versus the Wii with 27% playing online.

When it says: "Play Video Games (Net)" it means offline + online combined.

awesomeperson5302d ago

I only ever see my friends playing games (both ones I add online and real friends).

Of course, people also sign out of PSN when watching movies to avoid interruptions.

Maddens Raiders5302d ago (Edited 5302d ago )

..you're absolutely correct & thanks yh the online part I was wrong about but what was still glaring is that they're saying (net) Wii users & 360 users are outgaming PS3 users offline & online. I just don't buy it - how do they really know offline? Worldwide? No way.

"Xbox 360 users spend 62 percent of their console time on games -- with their playtime evenly split between online and offline play. PlayStation 3 users spend a little more than half of their console time doing things other than gaming -- and when they play, it's "relatively more" offline versus online play than its rival."

^^this is classic "journalistic rubbish" this has no weight at all. What does this even mean really?

Don't believe the hype.

gamingdroid5302d ago

It means what it just said. I don't see what is so unclear about it?

kasasensei5302d ago

When i see the graphics, i can't say 360 or ps3 win anything above the other. Almost tie everywhere. Only the wii is losing the battles for online games & listening music. And amusing fact, ps3 is ahead when we talk about social networking. XD

Dac2u5302d ago

Anyone remember this headline: "Pachter: Netflix on Wii won't matter as much as on other consoles"

Looks like he got another one wrong.

These numbers really don't surprise me. The 360's top 10 games are mostly FPS's that are made for online play. The PS3 has a healthy mix of both online and offline focused games. And the Wii has few games worth playing online.

OmarsAccount5302d ago

Emphasis on the top 10, as the Xbox 360 library as a whole also has a healthy mix of online and offline focused games. Now obviously with XBL being a large factor in people purchasing an Xbox 360, many will want to play online, so then most of the top 10 games will be predominantly games with exceptional online gameplay.

Koolno5302d ago

"Now obviously with XBL being a large factor in people purchasing an Xbox 360"

Misinformed people prefer to pay to do the same thing with inferiors games and hardware ?

It's just marketing, and "my friend has a xbox, so i buy a xbox" thing...+ the one year advantage (people don't change easily, even if it's really easy and better to change)
