BioWare using Mass Effect 3 engine for Playstation 3 version of Mass Effect 2

Producer Jesse Houston revealed that the Playstation 3 version of Mass Effect 2 is running off of the Mass Effect 3 engine.

@divideby0 There is no chug n chug in ME2. ME2 is very polished on 360 and runs at steady frame rate of 30 fps or more at all times.

There were major loading hiccups and frame rate issues in ME1, though.

From the looks of that footage, it is exactly the same as the 360 version. In the trailers for the different classes they had footage of that red corridor on Omega that was in the video, it looks 100% identical to that footage. True better optimisation is good, which is my point below, the new engine tools are for performance, not for visual increase, which is why it looks the same.

The video is way too compressed to truely tell. IGN says it looks smoother so I guess that's an opinion that's more trust worthy than both of ours. Ultimately, we won't know until we get the game in our hands. ME2 in my opinion is GOTY so good on PS3 owners.

Ive beaten the game twice, the 360 version does not look that faded. I dont know what IGN did to the 360's footage, but things like the guns and Jacob's face looked pretty similar to that PS3 footage when i played it on my 32" vizio in 1080p.

I'm getting Mass Effect 2 day one, while I'm going to wait for LittleBigPlanet2. Honestly, I didn't enjoy the first LBP as much as everybody else. Everything about LBP was great except the character movement. It felt like you were a frozen anvil (heavy and slippery landings). Also there was no double jump.

I'm still getting LBP2, but I'm waiting on it, because I would rather have a great story based game with my preferred style of play (shooting things) than a cool little platformer that's going to take a long time before anybody makes mini games that are worthwhile.

Im pretty sure its gonna be similar to what ME2 did with people that didnt have ME1 saves (what i did my first playthrough). They just assume a lot of the major decisions and you have no input. Because new players wouldnt get some references to ME1, you dont even get to see most of the repercussions of your small choices in ME2 (which i learned in my second playthrough :)

Basically, If you want the full experience of the trilogy you should go for PC or 360. One of the coolest memories of mine this gen. is finding out that bug queen thing i saved thank me. Completely forgot about it until i saw her liason in ME2.

if you have a PS3 only, and want to experience a great game and the full thing, get ME for PC (it runs on anything) and play it, remember your actions then pass them onto ME2, its as good as having the first for PS3

I'm sure the engine will be much more refined by the time ME3 hits shelves - this is more of a preview of it I assume. The graphical update is welcome - I did get a bit of "chug" on my 360, none on my PC, so I'm interested to see how well it will preform on the ps3.

Huge bioware fan, I'll buy any game they make that is worthwhile on each platform if they offer different content (my ME1-2 on 360 were barebones, PC was fully DLC equiped, ps3 comes with the DLC and interactive start, making it easier to enjoy vastly different play throughs!). The way they have released ME2, it was hard not to buy it for all 3 platforms.

I love ME2, I have over 5 playthroughs 4 being on insanity. I will also be getting this for PS3 so I can maybe change some ME1 decisions that I never made with ME1 to see how it works with ME2.

(PS3 new comers play this on high difficulties as it has more RPG elements. On normal it can be played like most shooters, high difficulties forces you to use combinations of abilities and change team layout depending on what enemies and protection they have. A much richer experience. Also soldier is most boring class)

I do agree about the difficulty but i thought the soldier class was the best. You get access to more health and the heavy machine gun. And you have access to your teammates abilities, and given that they cant die i thought it was the ultimate layout.

What they are saying is that they used the new engine tools to port the game ( newer engines support better cross platform optimisation ) but they are not saying they have reworked all the game assets to the level of the new engines capabilities, which is how many people will interpret this.

And you know this how? I fully expect the ps3 version to look dramatically different than the 360 version now. Comparing it to the PC is a different beast all together, an amazing PC will beat out consoles graphically because you can easily upgrade as new tech comes out, whereas you cannot upgrade a ps3/360's graphic card, ram, overclock, add cooling, or fuck with bios and background applications.

No it isn't the same version of the engine. Engine 3.5 last year isn't the same as 3.5 now. Apparently you do not realize the engine has been updated several times since the 360/PC version of ME2 launched.

Not related directly to ME2 is the fact that Steamworks was incorporated into the U3 engine in March along with several other engine updates. Great news since Steam is coming to the PS3.

@Dragon 82 below: I played ME1 on PC. Been there, done that. His post was a pretty desperate attempt to make himself feel better. Just think of him playing Metal gear Rising. Not only is it not a true Metal Gear title, but he hasn't played the back story.

Let's remember the plot being carried over is not integral to ME2, but a very nice feature 360 owners had that PS3 owners wouldn't turn there noses up to.

RPG elements may have been better in ME1, but looking at the review scores for ME2, it's universally agreed ME2 is the better product....I was fortunate to have completed ME1 when I had a 360.

I'm just happy that this masterpiece is coming to a console I (currently)own and that you don't (actually) need to have played ME1 to enjoy it. But I understand it helps if you had, and are able to carry the story over.

IGN has the difference for you, PS3 looks a little brighter and shinier, whether or not that translates into more or less realistic is up to interpretation. Its a newer engine, but using the same assets its not going to make much difference.

Things I liked about ME1:
-It's an RPG, ME2 isn't. There aren't stat upgrades, you only get to level up your abilities like 5 times, every character can do many of the same abilities. ME1 you had to upgrade your hacking skills and you couldn't open ever cannister right away.
-I liked driving around in the MAKO. In ME2 you just doing this boring planet scanning and launching probes, which has an annoying voice that says "probe launched" "launching probe" or "probe away" EVERY TIME YOU LAUNCH! Every planet has like 4-12 hotspots to launch, so you hear that voice A LOT>
-I think the storyline was better than ME2.
-Varied environments, exploring the Citadel was fun. It's dumbed down in ME2.
-Combat was more fun in ME1. ME2 everyone does everything. It doesn't really matter who you take along because you don't have to worry about picking cannisters and hacking computers.

no, they are just very dedicated developers. They are probably my top favorite game developers. The previous games like KOTOR, Jade empire, Never winter night, were all stellar titles. They know how to drive a story, probably the best at it too.

It is great that they are developing for multiple consoles now. More people can can play great games. If you like RPG genra, Bioware should always be on your radar.

The Mass Effect series has been running on the unreal 3 engine since the beginning. There is no evidence so far that Mass Effect 3 is running on a different engine than the previous two games. They tweaked Mass Effect 2 for the PS3 thats true. Anyone who thinks that they're using a "new engine" for the PS3 version is truely a moron. Nobody and I mean nobody use a new engine to port a game over to a different platform. What's happening here is simply a case of a port done RIGHT. A rare event in terms of the PS3 which usually get the shaft thanks to lazy devs.

This is why Bioware is sitting on top of the RPG world, it's their attention to details and refusal to spit out poorly developed crap to make a buck.

For the PS3 this game will be the best RPG to date. However a huge part of ME2's allure are the plot tie ins from the first game which unfortunately, will be replaced by a choose your own adventure type comic. Not the same, but good enough I guess.

Mass Effect 3 does not use a "new engine", what a misleading comment from the devs! It uses an updated version of the Unreal Engine 3.5, why haven't many N4G commenters picked up on this? Respect to Bioware, they haven't given us a lazy port, infact, they've made a really big attempt at making the PS3 version even better, with its new engine, DLC content, better visuals and a comic book explaining the events of Mass Effect for those who haven't played the first...all on one disc!

I've nearly completed the first Mass Effect and I'm really enjoying it so hopefully ME2 and 3 will provide me with the same enjoyment. Only downer is that I have to recreate my Shepard, but if I make the same choices in the comic then it'll be ok. ^_^

YES, it looks better on PS3 compared to the X360 version, but it's the same game with a plus of more content on the PS3 (all X360/PC DLC on blu-ray disc).

When Mass Effect 2 X360 released, it looked and played great...an improvement over its sequel. The PS3 version is running on an updated Unreal Engine 3, which will power Mass Effect 3 hence the visuals look refined on the PS3 version. Play the game on X360, the player experiences the world of Mass Effect 2; play the game on PS3, the player will experience the world of Mass Effect 2.

The point is that I've seen the game running on the X360, and seeing the video posts of the PS3 version, it doesn't matter which version one gets...the game is still the same and plays the same with the major difference on content. Getting the X360 version at retail, the consumer has to budget for the DLC whilst the PS3 consumer will get the X360/PC content on disc.

I think its sad that they couldnt include the first one, shure the second one was way more polished and had higher production values but to me it just wasnt the same. My main gripe with me2 was with the story, shure it was really good but i thought it was pretty unfocused. The absolutely best part of me according to me is the premises with the reapers, and me2 had far to little development in that area.
