Game Pro: Super Mario All-Stars Review

Game Pro: Hardcore Super Mario fans no doubt know that the collection could have had more value, but they've likely already picked up the game based on the nostalgia factor alone. I know, because I'm one of them (I've also spent $20 on the Game Boy Advance rerelease of Super Mario Bros., so I've subjected myself to even worse deals). The other crowd that will probably purchase this collection is the Wii owners that have enjoyed the plumber's other Wii adventures, but aren't internet-savvy enough to plumb the depth of the Wii Shop Channel. The middle ground -- gamers who respect the franchise, but aren't exactly fanboys for it (Genesis owners, I'm looking at you) -- should be aware that the collection is a few bucks too high (or a few games too short) of being a worthwhile purchase. If you fall into any of these groups, know that there are other ways to experience each of these games that are much friendlier to your wallet, but only if you're willing to forgo the nostalgic flourishes.

PROS: These are some of the greatest games of all time; you can have multiple saves for each game; Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels' continue system is a bit more newb-friendly than its Virtual Console iteration.

CONS: You can buy all four games on the Virtual Console for less; Super Mario Bros. and Lost Levels don't control quite as impeccably as they do on the Virtual Console; a true Mario compilation would have included his other non-Wii platformers and had a more robust selection of bonus material.

The 7 Best Video Game Remakes of All Time

Remaking video games is not a new trend, but it is more popular than ever. Which are the best video game remakes of all time?

shinoff2183457d ago

It's a crime star ocean 2 remake isn't on this list. Jeez

kevco33456d ago

There's so many remakes coming out these days, I'm sure many people's favourites won't have made the cut!

jznrpg456d ago

I agree with you. It’s was so good I finished it way faster than I wanted to.

ApocalypseShadow456d ago

Where's the 2D love? Like Strider and Bionic Commando Rearmed? Some of my personal Remake favorites.

LightofDarkness456d ago

Those games were excellent, especially loved that Strider reboot back just after the PS4 released.

got_dam456d ago

Links awakening was fun, but it STILL runs very poorly. Slowdown all over the place.

DefenderOfDoom2456d ago (Edited 456d ago )

For a 90s video game remake I would put QUAKE 2 at the top. Nightdive did a amazing job . And Machine Games added awesome new content.

Dead Space over Mario All-Stars, esp since All-Stars was just a graphical upgrade. Otherwise.....can't quibble much with that list.

Custom Super Mario World SNES Is A Thing Of Beauty

Custom-themed, limited edition consoles weren’t really a thing back in the day of the SNES and the Genesis, so it’s up to a dedicated few to set things right. Zoki64 picked Super Mario World, the most obvious choice for his custom SNES.

The super famicom looked way better than the boxy snes in the states.. This is a really nice console.. All super famicoms look nice though..

Mr Marvel3451d ago

PAL SNES (Australia/Europe) was the same as the Super Famicon.

tanukisuit3452d ago

This is the kind of effort the big 3 need, when making limited/special console bundles!

iliimaster3451d ago

i love the controls ;D man the D pad would tear my thumb up but so worth the memories

contradictory3451d ago

hmmm.... i prefer the vanilla version of the european SNES
( which is basically the same design as the Super Famicom )
this looks a bit too colorful for my tastes but each to his own.

Super Mario All-Stars: What Did Critics Say in 1993?

It's Super Mario Week at Review Crew, which means that we'll spend the next three episodes looking at old school games starring Nintendo's favorite Italian plumber. Up first it's Super Mario All-Stars, a compilation featuring upgraded versions of Super Mario Bros. 1, 2, 3 and The Lost Levels. Did critics love this 16-bit collection of 8-bit games, or did they view this as a cynical cash grab from Nintendo? We turn to Electronic Gaming Monthly, Nintendo Magazine System, SNES Force, Die Hard Game Fan and other classic magazines for the answer.

Mario 1,2,3....but with Super Mario World Sounds & Art Style.

How could you not like that.

guitarded774011d ago

THIS REVIEW: "What a thrill, all of my bad memories of 8 bit in living color ... boing, boing, happy, happy. I'm sorry, but the old Mario games just haven't stood the test of time. The music and sound FX are great, but the control is too lose [sic] and it's all just too cuddly. I believe it's time to retire Mario for a more nineties character." -Skid

Yet we're still downloading and playing them today. This guy was proven wrong... so wrong.

I strangely prefer the 8 bit versions than the 16 bit. Might be nostalgia factor.

GamingSinceThe80s4010d ago

I was just about to say the same thing. These remakes look and play better but it's just not how my mind remembers them.Anyone who grew up on or are just now playing them for the first time must think we are crazy for liking the old games better and they are probably right.lol

RosweeSon4011d ago

Mario 3 on the NES, SNES versions looked a not to clean and rent a mario, prefer them in their original forms, still played it, who didn't but I'd take the original games in this case every time.they were great in the first place, some things don't need constant tweaking, George Lucas I'm looking at you, the fact he put new Anakin at the end of Return of The Jedi was outrageous, little of topic but hey ho, as you were.
