Won? Was this a contest or an interview? That's the exact reason Geoff came off as a d bag. He didn't treat it as an interview. He took it as a personal attack. The guy clearly didn't know about who pics da games that go up for awards but Geoff didn't know about da mmos. So in da end Geoff didn't deliver a proper interview and angry Joe has to put up some half assed interview on his site. To top it off someone paid for a ticket from tx to da awards show expecting a 1on 1. Instead got what u viewed. IMO Geoff showed his ass on this one.

OT: Nothing personal BX81, but there's something really annoying about people who type "da" instead of "the"... Why? Why do people do this, even if you pronounce the word 'The' as 'Da" in real life,doesn't mean you have to spell it the way you MISpronounce it, it makes it very awkward for others to read, since "Da" isn't a word, and when you type it the way you mispronounce it, it forces the reader to read it that way, which is jarring and irritating for people to read. When you SAY 'Da' instead of 'The', it's because you haven't learned to speak properly, we shouldn't then spell the word improperly to match how we say it. It's like when people say 'Axe' instead of 'Ask'... You wouldn't then spell the work ask as "axe"... I'm sorry for the rant, I'm done now.

If the 10-15 minute interview was agreed upone, then Geoff is unprofessional and a prick. if he did end up too busy to do the interview, which i could understand, he should of put it off and tried to reschedule for a later time. at the very least give him your attention for those 2 minutes.

Angry Joe shouldn't be let off the hook either. if he really wants to be a serious voice in the gaming community, he should of been better prepared. even under those conditions he should of had 5 key questions ask and discuss with Geoff.

I don't know why AngryJoe felt the need to do an exposé on what is commonly accepted fact. The interviewer came on a bit strong too. "Everyone feels that the VGAs are just a big joke." "This show appeals to slobbering idiots." Etc.

Not to take sides here, but the vast majority of video-games - well what we call "AAA" at least - are geared toward Western, 15-20 year old males. There is a tremendous amount of misogyny and machismo in video-games and only now is the market starting to shift. And if we were going by simply the most "popular" game for GOTY and ignoring all other considerations, Bejeweled or Malbongi would probably win.

It seemed like what Joe was looking for was recognition for the underdogs or indie gems. That's not what big award shows are about. The Oscars rarely recognize the films that are most tastefully and uniquely done. They give accolades to what is the most popular or trendy, which is not always the best (subjective, but still).

There's also something to be said for discretionary speech and tact. If someone was commenting on a project of mine (Joe) and started off the interview like that, I (Geoff) would probably get my hackles up too.

Geoff is just a media figurehead. If AngryJoe wants to do a real piece, go grill EA/ Capcom/ Activision about the hundreds of dollars worth of DLC unlocked for each of their AAA titles.

Re: Final Fantasy XIV, it was released as such a steaming pile of sh!t that I (being an MMO junkie) wouldn't count it either. It scored between 4-6 across the board, why would you even nominate it? What would you nominate if for? FOTY? (Flop of the Year)

I actually thought that the VGAs had some good stuff on show this year. It was the first one that wasn't a total wash. Sure, the jokes were horrid (though Neil P. Harris did his best with the material), but they showed us games, and that's enough for me.

I think Joe came into the interview with a rather hostile attitude and several misconceptions about what the VGAs are about (promoting popular AAA franchises) and/ or should be and Geoff reacted in a less than accommodating manner.

This is just weird. Angry Joe is expressing a valid concern, something that's been around for years. Intelligent gamers don't want their interests to be perceived as nothing but immature ultraviolence and boobs.

Too bad, because the VGA's aren't marketing toward intelligent gamers; those gamers follow reviews, they buy stuff that doesn't suck, end of line. What's the point of marketing toward people who are assessing product quality? They want to get the suckers - the kids and teens.

This is what Joe can't understand and what Keighley can't tell him. Keighley can't be on camera disparaging his own show, exposing the seedy corporate underbelly that lets a video game awards show exist on TV. He has something that's endangered as of late and of extreme importance called a job. He's not going to lose it just to tell the straight-up truth to someone outside of Spike's key demographic group.

I'm mixed about it. I like what Joe's trying to do, but Keighley has heard it all before. He has no choice. All he can do is try to make this show presentable despite the demands put on him by mega-company execs. If you want to direct your attention toward someone responsible for how the VGA's turn out, don't look at him. He's trembling under pressure from higher-ups at Spike and PR leaders from the biggest game publishers around. Throw your anger that way, even though it won't be seen, heard, or acknowledged. Until smarter gamers are the main buyers of video games, smarter gamers won't see much of anything from the VGA's.

It's all about mass quantities of money, it's beyond Keighley's control, and the odds aren't in favor of the VGA's ever looking like something that any of us would enjoy. We're just the all-singing, all-dancing idiots who still watch the show to see the new trailers. Well, don't. They're on the Web the next day.

You know, the more I look at this, the more that I feel Joe was just trying to ask questions the way other people asked him. He's not necessarily as angry at how Geoff acted as much as how it led to a bad outcome for his viewers. Okay, so on the runway, it looked like a double-sided serving of awful, but at the press conference, Joe's questions especially sounded amateurish. Have a question ready and ask it in as small a package as possible - otherwise you're never getting these questions again. He looked like a clown up there trying to explain himself, and that's sad, because what's behind those stumbling words is a good point. As a big TGWTG fan, I'm pretty disappointed that their organization was represented like that - he should have had those questions in his head, ready to go. Then again, if it were my first glance at how companies really work, and what powerful people really think about the little guy, I'd probably be miffed to the point of stumbling also. If anything, he sure did learn something about how the world functions.

I think both had some fault here. Seems to me Geoff already knew Joe's MO and had prepared for the offensive questioning. Naturally when Joe tried to fire some missiles Geoff fired back. Clearly a lack of professionalism on both parts. Joe definitely needs to think faster on his feet and should have came better prepared. It's obvious Geoff didn't take Angry Joe seriously, but Joe's appearance does seem to be on a wacky side, next time he should try a suit and a tie, and lose the mustache.

Geoff and Joe are just two different personalities from two sides of the fence. Geoff is handling everything from a business standard point, Joe approaches more from consumers side. That wasn't an interview, it was definitely a debate attempt. Geoff was expecting Joe to challenge him, of course Geoff would put his guards up and defend his show from Joe's offensive questions. While Joe's questions do raise good solid points, Geoff in the end is just being a business man and try to defend a show he himself produced, however, Geoff could have handle the whole more smoothly with the camera rolling.

The show is aiming for casual gamers who don't have decent knowledge of gaming, its meant to attract audience with celebrities (who may have nothing to do with gaming) and provide an environment for game studio to promote their games. It's a fair business event, but in the eyes of true gamers, nothing is interesting in VGA except the trailers debut.

There is stupid CiV 5 was one of the nomines. I don't know if I would of made another catagory for MMOs this year either. Not enough good ones came out. Point Number 2. Dumb Joe ask who picks the winners and nominees? How did you not know that the nominations and winners are picked by a group of the mainstream journalist,(I.E IGN, Gamespot, etc) I've known that for like 3 years now, I remember reading about how the show works in a Gameinformer magazine a few years back. That was one of the big things they talked about was how and who picked all the nominnes and winners. Then after Keighly tells him how it's all decided Joe then like a douchbag sayes, " You heard it hear first!", No we didn't it's been widely known information for years. So yeah Joe was comepletely off on that point.

My final thoughts on this whole thing was dumbass Joe didn't come of as articulate as game journalist or interviewer should. It seemed like he had to think of every word he was going to say sort of like Sarah Palin. He just seemed really inexperenced at interview and his attitude didn't help. Also I don't think he gets the idea that the VGAs are about as series as the MTV movie awards. If he is expecting the oscars or something then he needs to look elsewhere. As for the writing, horrible jokes, and not so funny skits, those are staples of award shows and if your expecting a Video Game Award show to be intelligent, witty, and funny, then your fooling yourself. Again with expectations, what were you expecting out of a red carpet interview? That's not the place that riveting thought provoking interviews take place. Finally as said above if you want to have serious sit down interview that uncovers amazing unknown dirty secrets of the videogame industry, don't go after some stupid awards show, go grill the people at Activision or EA. THose are the people that need "investigating".

As for my thoughts about the VGAs. They get better over the years but that's because my expectation aren't for some Oscas type of show I mean it's blantantly obvious that the VGAs aren't going to be that, they air on Spike for Christ's sake. The network that runs Manswers and Blue Mountain State. The network that is primarly marketed towards men who love BooBs and Beer.

alot of you seem to have missed the part where angry joe states that he set an interview up weeks in advance. he asked for a 15 minute sit down interview where he could ask questions from people submitting them online. now what was he given once he got there? "you have 2 minutes to ask questions beside the red carpet with people yelling and me being distracted by tits". have you ever prepared a 15 minute speech or interview? have you then had to reduce your 15 minutes to only 2 at a moments notice? i would imagine joe went into a panic mode as he tried to boil down his plan to only 2 minutes. also the guys name is angry joe. when taking an interview with such a person you expect some anger. the same way if you accept an interview with HHG, you will get a personality, not just a monotone voice reading simple questions.

im not sure who angry joe is but it seems hes angry at the way our favorite pasttime is being thrown into the meatgrinder that is consumerism. he just wants to know why a show honoring videogames doesnt do that. why no mmo category? no game made more money this year than WOW. he points out the ridiculous way companies sponsor categories, celebrities that do not game are chosen to appear, and anything actually important to real gamers is ignored. cant blame him for trying.

But I feel that Joe's intentional questions and reasons were clear, they came out as an attack towards Keighly. Both were racing against the clock, so it came across very sloppy and unprofessional. Maybe under better circumstances, the interview between the 2 men might have been much better.

However, I also can relate to Joe's mention of a lack of "other" game categories, such as MMO's, fighting games, and so on. It helps not only expand the view of the industry as a whole, but recognizes the talents and entertainment from a wider variety of facets. Both men are probably good guys to get along with, but under an atmosphere that densely crowded and stressful, it doesn't produce the best results.

And to be honest, pulling FF XIV out as a trump card, as much as I play and love the game (yeah, I know its hard to believe), was not good at getting a solid point across of a "complete and entertaining package" from the MMO category, such as World of Warcraft's recent expansion, which could have been included in some fashion. DLC of the year also could be included to developers who continue to deliver, as well as fighting games such as Street Fighter or BlazBlue.

I say get rid of the non-gaming celebs, increase the amount game-related stuff, expand the categories, add a "wider variety" of judges, and condense the show so it doesn't try to drag on and bore us eventually.

Better luck next time to Joe, hope he gets another interview. And hope Goeff Keighly doesn't feel defensive the next time he gets an interview. Good guy as far as I know, but I'd like to hear more on how the VGA's operate and put the categories together behind the scenes.

It might just be me but there is only person I would call a complete douchebag and his first name is not Geoff. Angry Joe seems to me to be an obnoxious precious idiot to put it bluntly who thinks he is entitled to whatever he wants. Fine, if Geoff Keighley did mess him about with interview times and length then you should still try and act professionally instead of acting like a spoiling brat and turning the interview into nothing much more than "why isnt game X in this list, this sucks." There is no way the VGAs were ever going to have FFXIV as one of the best PC games nominees when it got widely panned by the publications that make up the judging panel, (coincidentally gametrailers have listed FFXIV in their top 10 worst sequels of all time).

There are many good flaws to raise about the VGAs, some which he raises but dont hide them in your crybaby interview and then a 24 minute rant which just smacks of a bloated sense of self-importance, which seems to be hypocritical as this post seems to be a bit too self important :).

In the other you have a guy who, up until I found this story, I never heard of.

So you take a "player in the industry" who by no means needs to give the time of day to an unknown weblogger and tries to throw him a bone and since this Joe guy doesn't get Barbra Walters treatment he is offended.

A well known singer sings a few verses of a song for fan on the way to a concert
then gets crapped on by said fan for not singing a whole set on that fans terms (while that fan acts like a spoiled brat) is totally different then a credited critic/journalist having a planned meeting with that singer to hear that singers songs in person. Then having the singer sing a few notes and say, where a through and just bounce while acting like a jerk.

There is a difference between a Professional dealing with another professional then a Professional letting a "FAN" ask a quick question or two. Geoff gave that Joe Guy a second for a question (or two) and took offense when he was not given the interview he wanted then Joe acted arrogant, and got what he gave in return. Plain and simple.

This Joe guy is for all intents and purposes a nobody in the industry, what does he expect to get. I, myself, can't ring up a celebrity right now and even get them on the phone, why would i expect them to grant me an all access interview!

Joe just couldn't back up his negative statements with credible research. The instant he slammed the awards for having a category that was dropped this year he had lost all respect from Geoff. The higher your raise your opinion the more you fall when someone realises a blatant flaw within it and that's exactly what happened here.

The ONE time Joe had an opportunity to turn things around was when Geoff made an error with Final Fantasy's release. If Joe was so certain of it being out and worthy of a nomination why didn't he hit back with the facts he claims to know? He had the opportunity to open up a flaw with Geoff, similar to that he suffered early on, yet he carried on like nothing had been incorrectly said.

I find this video quite frustrating as I actually find my self agreeing with Joe's views on the awards, it's very transparent in being a very money driven award show. Joe just got struck with bad research and Geoff took complete advantage and had every right to do so due to the way Joe put himself across at the start of the interview.

I agree there should be an MMO category, but how many really good MMO's come out a year? Not too many. The problem with MMO's is they have a very long lifespan. Some of these MMO's have been around for 12 years and some will go on for who knows how long. It's not like WOW will get a sequel for example. I guess they could nominate things like DLC for long time established MMO's. Yeah the independent MMO's too.

I wanted a best original score category. Music games and licensed music and movie like game scores have ruined a part of the industry. Traditional gaming scores. I'm old school, I like traditional instrumental synth sounding soundtracks, like on the SNES, Genesis and PS1, like for example I'd nominate the new Donkey Kong Country Returns soundtrack. That's a true gaming score to me.
