Analysis: Kinect Could Drive Xbox 360 To 1.7M U.S. Sales This December

As part of our monthly in-depth NPD sales analysis, Gamasutra analyst Matt Matthews examines Xbox 360's strong performance at U.S. retail in November, a surge that could lead the console to a record 1.7 million sales in the territory this December."

On 4 November 2010, Microsoft launched Kinect, its camera-based controller-less system for the Xbox 360. Consumers could obtain Kinect either as a standalone package for $150 or bundled with a 4GB or 250GB console ($300 and $400, respectively).

Along with the redesigned Xbox 360 S Model (introduced in June) and a reported $500 million promotion budget, the launch of Kinect has been likened to a relaunch of the console itself.

And they all laughed when microsoft said it would SELL(to actual consumers) THREE million.
Kinect is printing money

hoops2870d ago (Edited 2870d ago )

It's going to sell very well for some time.
It's attracting a group of consumers MS never anticipated:
PC modders/hackers.
That group is pushing some amazing ideas and hacks with Kinect.

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Edit:

They are not but it shows the potential the device has in the hands of game developers with full access to development kits.
The fact that PC gamers are also buying it is a bonus for MS also. It's extra sales.

@cgoodno

The more these hacks get posted on Youtube, the more exposure it is getting towards the hacking community/PC community.

@Alpha

And your point? Sales are sales no matter what region. LOL

kneelb4zod2870d ago (Edited 2870d ago )

The hacks are not bad, but they're not running of a 360.

I would feel more secure that Microsoft showed this stuff off them selves than third parties ,because it shows potential but we don't know if will work with a 360 and if third parties can't implement kinect right in games than Microsoft can.

Christopher2870d ago (Edited 2870d ago )

Really? There are millions of modders/hackers out there buying up the Kinect?

It's selling to the same crowd the Wii does, the casual gamer. It's a smaller subset that is Tech savvy, but it's selling to them.

As far as 1.7m in December... not sure how that works out. It's my understanding that new hardware sales drop tremendously in the second month. Even if it is December, the majority of sales occur in the last week of November, first week of December for the Holidays.

@hoops

Yeah, but that exposure isn't going to get anywhere near to making an impact on the already 2.5-3m number of Kinects sold. I'd say between 10k and 20k would be extremely gracious to determine as those who are hackers and bought a Kinect for hacking purposes.

kancerkid2870d ago

All I can hope is that they use the windfall of money to support unique IPs for the core gamer, exclusive or otherwise.

-Alpha2870d ago (Edited 2870d ago )

Key word: U.S

I don't doubt that Kinect will be a big hit, it already is doing quite well and MS's relentless advertising will probably pick up for Christmas.

@hoops

I was simply pointing out that the 1.7 million lead is U.S only, it may not be a lead after all when you consider the overall. But sorry, yes, the title specifically mentions U.S. and I wouldn't doubt that this lead can happen in the U.S

People are enjoying Kinect, and as cgoodno said above, the tech savvy minority are just that-- a minority. Ultimately it is selling to the same crowd that the Wii is selling to.

People are enjoying the device, so good for them. I love what I am seeing with the hacks, hope to see some developers make good use of that.

MS doesn't necessarily have to have "hardcore" games for Kinect but I am liking the idea of having these unique applications somehow used

"It's my understanding that new hardware sales drop tremendously in the second month. Even if it is December, the majority of sales occur in the last week of November, first week of December for the Holidays"

I'm not sure what you are saying works either, because the best selling month of the year in the US is December. Sales every year is always higher in the December month than November, so I'm not sure you can only cite the last week in November (makes sense due to Thanksgiving) and first week in December?

@hoops:

This video got over 1.9 million views, so I think it is definitely doing some free marketing for MS. I don't know if that translates to sales, but you might be right....

Christopher2870d ago (Edited 2870d ago )

***because the best selling month of the year in the US is December.***

Overall yes. But, my point was that the strength of December is in its first week of sales. It was kind of an aside and I'm sure is confusing. Sorry.

My main point was that I'm not sure new hardware will outsell itself in its second month, even if it is December. Overall sales may increase, but not sure Kinect/360 hardware sales will increase just because it's December. This article implies that the growth will be much more than the standard growth of electronic sales from November to December, when its Novembers sales were due a lot to the release of a new device.

I see Kinect sales more like other software sales, which tend to drop by ~40-60% after the first month of sales. It's the same thing that happened with Move.

Sales will increase, IMHO, based on the presence of new titles.

Belasco2870d ago

I believe MS will owe alot of further innovations for Kinect to the modders/hackers in the future.

Bigpappy2870d ago

December is huge for all popular Merchandise. Kinect sales should be higher in Decenber than in November (console sales in general.

Hackers are a small part of Kinect sales. Casual (even some who would not touch a Wii) are buying Kinect. You guys might not think too much of Kinect or the launch line up, but there isn't a more natual way on the market to control a character on you TV screen. Many people buying these bungles, don't even see themselves as gamers. They want to dance to Dance Central or get fit at home. They learn about Kinect sports after they get the system.

HolyOrangeCows2870d ago

Just curious.....why "point seven"?

Well you only have to look at last years NPD numbers for the same period:

November 2009:
# Wii - 1.26M
# Xbox 360 - 819,500
# PS3 - 710,400

December 2009:
# Nintendo Wii: 3.81 million
# PlayStation 3: 1.36 million
# Xbox 360: 1.31 million

Notice the Wii just about tripled and Xbox 360/PS3 just about doubled.

With the surprisingly strong showing of the Wii sales, the somewhat expected strong sales of the Xbox 360 and the weakening PS3 sales, it wouldn't surprise me if Xbox 360 did hit 1.7 million.

The odd thing is there is little change for Nintendo's sales from last year even as it was weakening all year long. I would have guessed MS stole some of the Wii sales, but it appears this was insignificant....

There-in probably lies your answer.

Christopher2870d ago

@gamingdroid:

You'll also notice how PS3 did less in November compared to the 360, but more in December than the 360. Really not a good case of proving percentage gain from one month to the next.

Personally, I think it's about Kinect, and I think Kinect sold the most we're going to see for the year and is the reason we saw such large numbers for the 360 in November. I think we'll see a decline in demand for Kinect and thereby a decline for the 360. I predict another 1-1.2m. That's just my opinion.

dcbronco2870d ago

I haven't bought Kinect yet. I most likely won't until the next generation of consoles. I believe that the ability to use multiple Kinects along with a much more powerful console could lead to some new directions for home gaming. Maybe even home virtual reality. Multiple consoles and multiple Kinects. It's all a matter of software.

gamingdroid2869d ago

"Really not a good case of proving percentage gain from one month to the next. "

I wasn't trying to prove percentage from month to the next other than saying, the increase from one month to the next is substantial.

The unit sales largely depends on what kind of promotion the retailers are doing, so I would say it is pretty consistent if anything.

"kancerkid + 19m ago All I can hope is that they use the windfall of money to support unique IPs for the core gamer, exclusive or otherwise."

LOL one of the funniest things I have ever heard. If very lucky we may get 1 or 2 of those type games a year, but that would be all.

kancerkid2870d ago

Considering I do not play that many games (college + work), that is good enough for me.

kancerkid2869d ago

Some basement-dweller who's mom pays for all their games disagreed with me.

Dark3602870d ago

Agree with you but do not forget a price cut in 2011...

Xbox 360S Bundle with kinect from 299 to 199 = Epic winner. Plus the upcoming games...

Halo Remake(Possible)
Forza 4
Project Draco
Gears of War 3
XCOM
Kingdoms
StarWars Kinect
Rise of Nightmares
Codename D
Steal Battalion: Heavy Armor
Haunt

Nitrowolf22870d ago (Edited 2870d ago )

That's just insane of a price cut
Cause pretty much that means a $99-$149 360 will be on the market, unless of course they phase out standalones that are below $199
idk for a bundle at that price, that would be absolutely insane.

This would also mean a Kinect Price Cut which could cost about $100 instead

@Disagree's
so you wouldn't want a Price a cut?????????
A price cut for any system is good, especially for me since i don't own a 360 yet. Makes it more affordable to own all three

Lionhead2870d ago

Project Draco, Gears 3, and Kingdoms has me excited.

The other games I could care less about.

Grenadan2870d ago

i didnt think kinect could sell this many

Stealth20k2870d ago (Edited 2870d ago )

Please.......microsoft outsold them by 840k in america in the launch week of the thing, everyone knows sales go down. And sony beat them in europe and japan that month so the difference for last month was alot less than 840k

1.7 million is ridicoulous

GenericUserName2870d ago

Ha ha ha ha ha...hey stealth, I see you ran off from our chat...I see you are trying to evade the subject, did you google playstation FLAGSHIP FRANCHISE? and by the way Mario IS nintendo's highest selling franchise genius, pokemon is number 2. We are talking about FLAGSHIP FRANCHISE NOT MASCOT.
Mario happens to be both flagship and mascot
Everybody knows that gt is playstation's flagship title. Google it. Or are you too scared?
