According to sources, there will be another price drop scheduled for the PS3. If you recall, the price was dropped on the 60GB PS3 when the 80GB PS3 was released. In addition to this there is several people saying that the 60GB PS3 will be discontinued and will sell only until stock runs out.

The latest notes from Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter and simExchange's Jesse Divnich have seen both analysts predicting the imminent price drop of the 80GB model PlayStation 3 to the 60GB's price of $499, as the latter model disappears from retail channels.

"We note that Sony recently acknowledged that it will no longer produce its 60Gb PS3," said Pachter, "and we expect the price of the 80Gb PS3 to be reduced to $499 before the holidays, maintaining a premium SKU at that price point."

A one sentence side note is hardly newsworthy. Everything is the same besides that one sentence.

The sentence is not even that harsh and it comes from a no name nobody.
The fact is consumers see the PS3 is a lower price and they buy it. Only 360 fanboys think it makes Sony look bad. Sony expands their install base how can that be a negative?

the PS3 is in big trouble of dying, its sales are too poor for it to catch up currently and with a lack of killer apps for 2007 holidays after Lair turned out to be garbage and Heavenly Sword turned out to be mediocre Sony is in big trouble going up against its competition this holidays in which it will probably be unable to gain market share and has a good chance of losing some at least in the minds of consumers.

2008 looks better but by then it might be too late for the PS3 which sadly had a lot of potential but has been mismanaged from the start thanks to poor design choices which resulted in difficult architecture and a pricepoint which is highly unattractive to anyone but the earliest of adopters while their competitors strive towards mass market acceptability.

Noone knows how much money Sony is losing on the PS3. Chances are they could be making money on each set. Microsoft and Sony are to different companies, M$ has to pay someone to redesign or modified their consoles which may take up 2 years to comeout..M$ knew they had a hardware failure and it took them 2 years to finally come up with a solution. Look at the PS3 all the features xbox fans want, but have to upgrade every 6 months to a knew console. It took sony 9 month to release a new modified PS3. The 80gb model is probably cheaper to make than the 60gb. Same features just different internal parts.

Last 2 months PS3 has sold more units worldwide than the 360. Who needs to sell more nextgen units at this time Sony or M$. If PS3 keep selling at the same rate as the 360, Sony is going to keep the price at $500 until the PS2 demand goes down, which seem like it's going to keep momentum for at least another 2 years. Sony is not losing any money on the PS3, there is already cheaper blu ray players on the market selling at a profit.

The Wii is selling very well in all three regions.

The PS3 AND PS2 are selling well in all three regions.

The 360 is dead in Japan and only in England is the 360 selling while being pretty much dead in the rest of Europe.

Microsoft is now up to 7 billion in losses for the entire Xbox project, RRoDs continue to plague even the newest 360 models, Microsoft continues to focus more and more on the PC side of gaming, and so far has been almost completely silent on any news beyond 2007 for the 360.

Yes, MS might be huge and they got cash to burn, but we are talking about 2 Gorillas here if you know, Sony is Japan 10th biggest company in term of revenue. Sony also got cash to burn. Although Sony report a $2 billion lost last fiscal year, that number is considered much better than $7 billion cumulative lost from MS's game division. And no, that Sony's $2 billion lost just occurred last year, a year before they are profitable, while MS 's game division has been losing money since day one of their business.
Now bring your point on the table, yes MS might keep fighting until they win that is a possibility but but so as Sony. The chance of Xbox winning in this gen still not that certain because 360 sales are not that robust as it should, MS projected to sell 15million console this year but adjust their number twice and end up selling about 60k console less than their 12million projection. However, that's not meant that MS is losing the war, but they are certainly not winning.

Why dose it matter to xbox fans when the PS3's price is lowered?. Its not like you guys are going to buy a PS3 right!!. PS3 is not going away soon, can't you guys get that into your thick skulls. Just 9 months into its life without any of the major established franchise being released yet and you guys say it in trouble. Man you guys must be joking. Why would PS3 die when clearly PS brand have.

1. The biggest number of established million plus selling franchises from previous generations.
2. The most varied games library which caters for everyone.

People, think. Its all about the games. After Halo3 what other major established Xbox franchise apart from NG2, PGR4, Splinter cell and Fable to be released that will counter the onslaught of established PS franchise when they make their PS3 debut. Which console will the 100milion plus PS2 owners will most likely migrate to play sequels to PS games they grew to like?. Sony knows the answer to these questions as well as anyone with common sense. So please excuse me if i think it just plain stupid when someone say PS3 might die soon.

I think PS3 is trying to correct it's original mistake of pricing itself $200 more than the XBOX 360. That was a huge mistake.

Originally PS3 should of matched XBOX 360's price of $400, so right now you see all the price cuts and it's Sony trying to move in the right direction and stay competative with the XBOX 360.

But people telling you Sony is cutting the price so much, because they are drying off, it's bullsh*t. As we speak the PS3 still costs $150 more than XBOX 360. They made a mistake and they are trying to correct.

I want to ask you a simple question how many 360's were sold in its first year and do you think it is already over for SONY when in fact they are really doing well. And do you think if the PS3 and 360 came out at the sametime would the 360 be first like it is now?

First of all, if you've got half a brain and are looking at the big picture, not just price of the unit itself...you'll see that the PS3 is poised for a pretty drastic momentum shift within the next year or so. Sink? Hardly.
