Xbox Live 'Far More Impactful' than Wii: Say Molyneux

Former independent studio president (now a Microsoft employee) and developer luminary Peter Molyneux says Xbox Live will be more influential to the video game industry than Nintendo's popular Wii Remote.

"Microsoft is an incredibly smart company and I never fail to be impressed by just how clever they are," Molyneux remarked when asked about the innovation behind Nintendo's motion-sensing controls.

"Don't forget this is the company which pioneered LIVE which I believe will ultimately be far more impactful on video games in the long term than something like the Wii controller," he added.

MK_Red, your argument is ridiculous. The sites you mention in the reports posted it "separately" because they not posted the whole interview, because it is not their content. So they posted the most interesting part of it.

This one is not the interview story and other sites on the net are posting this story as a quote and news from a famous game designer (Although an Xbox employee) because the point here is not the interview but what he has to say exactly about Wiimote and Live.

Strange. I thought if a site is posting a quote from an interview from a different site then you should link back to the source.

There is an interview on site A.
If site B decided to quote something from site A, then you post it from site B even if it posted already on N4G from site A.
If a different site (C) posts a different quote from the same interview from site A, then you post that also on N4G.

I understand your point but sites like CVG and Eurogamer post seperate news stories based on their own interviews because sometimes the quote from interview deserves it's own news story.
Other sites have posted the full interview as well as the quote in a different post.

Come on, Fable was the only Molyneux game that didn't live up to all it's potential and promises. Black & White and his older games were all perfect classics and I even consider Fable a classic. He failed to realize all his promises in the game but Fable was still a superb RPG.

Peter M said Live is more impactful than the Wiimote. Live allows you to download many types of media, communicate via voice or text, and play co-op or multiplayer with anyone around the world. The Wiimote provides motion sensitivity for a 2-dimensional display.

Molyneaux is just stating the obvious. Microsoft's XBOX Live service SHOULD and IS far more impactful than the Wii. I dont even think Wii has 5 games that are online compatible.

Not to mention that the virtual console is nothing more than a cash cow at nostalgia to dummies. While they have great games I have played or would play, I cringe at the option of no online multiplayer or co-op in NONE of the VC games. Just a straight download.

Why would I pay for a Virtual Console Street Fighter II when I can pay the same amount and purchase an HD Arcade Perfect port of the same game with online through XBL?

I mean the man works for MS so naturally he's going to put MS in front of anything else. He's a good employee and knows what to say. He already said he didn't like the Wii Remote for you have to move, and he said he wanted to make a game where you only have one button to use cuz of the touch sesitivity. You can do multiple moves with one button by pressing it differently. Whatever he did in the past is in the past, he just wants gamers to be even more lazy

Live wasn't the first console online service, but it has quickly proven to be the standard, and will show the way for years to come. Its appeal goes further than the hardcore gamers, though it has yet to fully be embraced by the casual crowd. (I love it anyway, though).

But the Wii remote has, in some ways, pioneered a new way for people of all ages and genders to play video games. (Which is why I plan on buying one for the family).

Live is a shared experience, but mostly from a distance: You can chat and play with your friends, but usually they're not right there with you.

The Wii offers a more communal, first-hand experience, and is easy enough for anyone to use. Hence, the reason why it's the best-selling system in the world right now.

When a question is brought up that challenges your stand and/or is going to make you look bad, completely ignore the question and answer something else! This is a perfect example.

That's what most of these comments here sound like. I will remember that each and every time any Sony or Nintendo employee speaks on anything related to videogames.

He also said "in the long term" and I agree with him. Motion sensing was a fad at one time and Nintendo did not invent it! If you really think waving your hand around is going to have more of an impact than online gaming than we disagree.

I really hope the Wii remote has more impact on the future than Xbox Live.

Xbox live lets people play games online, for a price. There's a lot of other stuff, I know, but, personally, when I buy a game console, I don't do it to download movies. What Xbox live brings to me, as a gamer, is a subscription fee.

Wii remotes let people get more into the game. It's a step toward virtual reality. It's still far from it, of course, but its a step in that direction.

So Xbox live's effect, at least to me, as a gamer (because I know there is a lot more to it than playing games against others, but he said video games, not talking to friends), would be make me pay for online, which neither Sony or Nintendo do.

The Wii controler's effect, to me, as a gamer, would be to make motion controls standard in nearly all video games.

I don't see why I would support MS after a comment like that at all, and, while some people are very against motion control, I know, it should be clear that it is a step in the right direction.

When you think of factory design, you don't think Ford, but he had a huge effect on the modern design of factories. When you think VR, you might not think of Nintendo, in the future, but mark my words, this whole motion control thing will have a lasting effect on the industry, when that generation comes that we can get it in our own homes.
