Former key Sony execs have revealed that the PlayStation exclusivity of Grand Theft Auto III was something of an afterthought - and came "remarkably cheap".
Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki and CFO Lin Tao talked about the state of the PlayStation business and the strategy and targets going forward, including how they're responding to the tariffs.
Sony announced its financial results for the fiscal year 2024, and things are certainly looking up, despite a decline in PS5 sales.
If their profits fall next quarter, we'll probably see more price hikes. I can't imagine having to pay £20 a month for PlayStation Plus.
Decline in hardware sales.
Behind on lifetime sales and decline in first party sales.
Third party content and PSN came through to save the day.
Things will improve starting with the next Ghost game.
Hopefully a steady flow of first party content by end of '25
PlayStation 5 has shipped 77.8 million units worldwide, Sony announced in its financial results for the three months ended March 31, 2025.
very nice.
in almost 5 years too.
some big hitters are yet to come
Makes sense, GTA didn't really take off until GTA3 anyway. Plus for, what, like every 1,000 PS2 users there was 1 Xbox user lol it's not like GTA on the original Xbox would have made a massive increase on the sales anyway.
""And they said, 'Well, we've got this Grand Theft Auto game... I suppose we could do a deal on that.'"
Gotta love the irony. "This GTA game" as if it was nothing but a small title. Guess Sony got the high end on that stick, it doesn't even sound like they were confident in the game. Wonder if they knew what the game would turn into.
I played GTA ever since I got the pirated version on PC when I was like 7. I lost hundreds of hours on that and NEVER once completed missions..because I didn't know how until I was much older lol
Can't wait to see the new PS3/R* Exclusive, whatever it is. A Rockstar exclusive would boost Sony's third party image tremendously. They are probably the biggest and highest quality third party devs
It probably was a similar situation to MS and Gears. I bet it cost them nothing to get exclusivity considering Epic hadn't made many massive hits.
I wonder how much Agent cost Sony, must be a hell of a lot considering GTA Timed DLC cost $50ml.
Exclusive to Playstation? No, I played that game on PC when it came out.
