Is Your Videogame Machine Watching You?

Microsoft Corp. officials are considering using the camera on their new Kinect videogame system to target ads to people watching the games.

Microsoft’s new Kinect controller for the Xbox 360Dennis Durkin, who serves as chief operating officer and chief financial officer for Microsoft’s Xbox video game business, told investors Thursday that Kinect - which allows users to play video games without so much as a joystick - presents business opportunities for targeted game marketing and advertising.

... targeted or not!

Fuck them. I already pay for the console, the games, the online....

... and then I get ads thrown in my face!? Get the fuck outta here!

hennessey862983d ago

instead of charging us they charge the companys who want to advertize

Yi-Long2983d ago

... and then I still don't want ads on my console. Very simple. I don't want it on XBL and I don't want it on PSN.

When commercials are shoved in my face like that, it usually means it's a reason for me to absolutely NOT buy that product.

8-bit2983d ago

lol @ hennessey thinking MS would drop the subscription fee for XBL!

acere2983d ago (Edited 2983d ago )

u still waiting on that?

Godmars2902983d ago (Edited 2983d ago )

Isn't the point that they already advertise on XBL? That all this would do is allow them to specifically target them at a time a specific user was on Kinect or even just the 360?

Though by all counts they should already be able to do that just from someone loging on. with this I guess they could do it on the fly. have certain ads pop up depending on the types of bodies in the room.

I'm also missing how this is Orwellian. Sounds more Fahrenheit 451.

beardpapa2983d ago

well they better not be using the camera to see who's in the room to determine what kind of ads are placed. that would be the same as letting a phone app know your location/personal info so they can determine what ads to show you, except having someone or something on the other end of the spectrum seeing what i'm wearing or not for the day is more intrusive than just knowing my location.

It's like the cameras on our phones. I'd hate it if one day some smart hacker decided to magically flash all our droids OTA and have that camera on while we don't know it, and suddenly there's this internet repository of all the naked droid men/women and what they did for the day.

Godmars2902982d ago (Edited 2982d ago )

Aren't they already doing or talking about doing something similar with cell phones. Nothing using a camera, but your location to spam you with ads and coupons as you past a nearby store. Like getting texted a buck off as you walk by a Starbucks.

As for hacking cell phone pics, that's already happening with either account servers being broken into and archived files that you already deleted being taken, or phone company employees themselves are stealing. Especially celebs pics.

We've been in an intrusive media era for some time already. A corporate rather than state driven. Kinect would just be another layer.

Hell yeah my game machine is watching me! It's watching me, I'm watching it, waiting for some sh*t to pop off! LMAO!

video games watch you

awiseman2983d ago

Although I agree the advertising is [email protected] But it hasnt happened yet so keeping fingers crossed.

Theodore872983d ago

if you use "stupid" or "obnoxious" instead of "gay," you will save yourself from offending 5% of the population and the guilt you have for typing it (evidence, you typed [email protected] instead of gay thinking this site would censor this word lol).

On topic, yeah? How long was the Vietnam war? How long was the Iraq war? Didn't the media only stop delivering news regarding a war till it's over or just a couple of articles when the war's just broken out? The issues are still there regarding MS' greed. Increase the already outrageous monthly fee for the supposedly free service (LIVE GOLD membership) and still slap you with ads on the device you bought and paid the service fee for. Now they are talking about using an add-on device that you're overcharged for ($150? really?) to spy on you and give you even more "suitable" ads. That's not obnoxious enough for you?

shove your adds unless it makes my game free

SeanScythe2983d ago

something tells me MS has seen a lot of people having sex so if you get ads for Viagra or baby products maybe trojan condoms. Or even ads for dating sites for the lonely guy watching porn. lol
