Nvidia Geforce GTX 580 vs AMD Radeon HD 5970

Nvidia has recently released its new flagship graphics card, Geforce GTX 580. Many consumers have been waiting to see just how well this card performs. Here at Visualdreamers.com, we thought it would be a great opportunity to match it up against the AMD Radeon HD 5970. Considering they are both flagship GPUs, this should be an interesting comparison.

Nvidia releases a card that should have came out months ago

AMD remains in charge for two reasons

1)price
2)performance

lets just wait for the specs/price of the 6970

Who the hell would disagree with that statement when it's right on all accounts. It's probably some butthurt fanboy who can't the fact AMD still has a card that's still faster than what Nvidia has. Besides all that, the 6970 is going to be my next card.

toaster5291d ago

lolwut?? Price? No. 580 is $499, while the 5970 starts at $700 and goes up to $1000. There is one manufacturer that is selling the 5970 for $499 but it will not stay at that price, they even said it themselves (Sapphire). It also looks like this site handpicked a few benchmarks because from what I've seen, the 580 absolutely dominates the 5970. More than 10% performance over the 5970 in 50% of benchmarks.

Check for yourself.

As of now, nVidia has top two fastest single GPU cards on the planet, the 480 and the 580. There is no competition in that market yet.

As for the 6970 and 6990, AMD had to delay the launch a bit because of manufacturing yields. They don't seem to be hitting the mark they want. It's also rumored and likely that they will run as hot as the 480. But as of now, if you want a good price you get AMD, if you want pure performance horsepower, there is NO other choice than nVidia.

hoops5291d ago (Edited 5291d ago )

The 6990 has been delayed. The 6970 is on track for launch in a few weeks.

One thing I would like to see Nvidia supply is Multiple monitor support with just one card.
That for me is a deal breaker.
I own twin 5970's in crossfire, however I cannot understand why nvidia cannot bring out these GOU's to run multiple monitors on just one card and not SLI.
It's the one area AMD still holds.
Come on Nvidia. Get your freak on! lol

Edit: Thanks for the link!
However I will wait until I hear this from AMD themselves instead of "sources"
However if this is true then it does not bold well for Nvidia either:

"According to our sources, yields for Cayman are still in the single digits and there's minimal chance AMD will have any shot of achieving its schedule or production/ship targets for Q4. This could also really hurt if Nvidia successfully launches its GTX 580 in volume – despite its smaller RAM offering"

Edit:

It's one of the reasons why I sold my GTX 295 and bought Twin 5970's. I waited to see how the GTX 480 turned out as I was going to grab that, however it was not the card it was meant to be. Now if it were the 580 I would have stuck with Nvidia.
Multiple monitor gaming is big for me so it was an easier choice to make and the 480gtx at the time of release was not up to par...and I got a killer deal for my twin 5970's LOL

Check your news again.

And yes, I do agree that nVidia should have cards for triple monitor setups, that's the only thing I want from them. one 580 is more than enough to run a triple monitor setup, but if you want triples then you have to put two cards in SLI, that's my only gripe. I don't have a triple mon setup but I do have two monitors and I can get two screens set up with one card which is fine. I'm not big on 3D so I couldn't care less about it.

The real killer5291d ago (Edited 5291d ago )

I'm, becouse it's no match between Nvidia has one core and two core's in one card from AMD.

So, frankly it's two core's agains one core from Nvidia and Nvidia beat the crap from AMD with two cores agains one from Nivdia.

@toaster
Thanks for the news link. I cant wait for the 6970. It sounds sooo sexy.

Let's all just forget that the 5970 is a dual-gpu right AMD fans?

I think this article and the graphs were done up by and AMD/ATI fanboy. Theres no reason to have Crossfire listed in these graphs, and if the were going to do that, then they should have at least included SLI for a real comparison.

The GTX 580 would be the better card to get simply because it runs cooler and it's not as loud and it's a single card solution.
Now before all the crying, I have TWO 5970's in my Rig.
Simply put, Nvidia did a bang up job with the GTX 580 and give credit where credit is due. It's a kick ass card for the high end. Kudos to Nvidia. Love this competition because prices have already dropped for AMD high-End cards with the release of the GTX 580.

This is the card the GTX 480 should have been. The GTX 480 was just too hot and too loud and not enough performance over the 5870 to warrant the purchase. Moreover the GTX 480 in half the real world gaming tests would lose out to the older 5870. AMD did a great job with the 5xxx series. So also give AMD credit for such a great GPU and silicon.

Now the only issue here is when the 6970 arrives (and that's real soon) it will most likely be faster than the GTX580 based on 5970 results...
and based on the 5970 and 5870 silicon, it will most likely run cooler as well.
Time will tell though. Regardless. This competition is amazing. Prices will stabilize at the high end.

MAJ0R5291d ago (Edited 5291d ago )

like everyone else is saying, wait for the 6970 which will be awesome :D

Dude4205291d ago

I don't think the 6970 is supposed to be a dual GPU card. Since AMD apparently rebranded the number, the 6870 is the successor to the 5770 and the 6970 to the 5870. If there was a dual GPU card, it would probably end up being called a 6990.

Anyway, I've noticed some users on this site are just pure AMD or Nvidia fanboys (doesn't make sense to me). The fact is, both companies have made mistakes and both have made awesome cards, the competition is what pushes the hardware. In my experience of buying cards, I'm always torn between an Nvidia or an AMD card and choose what suits me best.

hoops5291d ago

It is indeed the 6990. It's coming in May and that Card is going to be a beast.

toaster5291d ago (Edited 5291d ago )

@ hoops

"The GTX 480 was just too hot and too loud and not enough performance over the 5870 to warrant the purchase. Moreover the GTX 480 in half the real world gaming tests would lose out to the older 5870."

That was then, this is now. nVidia has been on the ball with drivers which is more than can be said for AMD. The 470 is now in competition with the 5870, they are pretty much neck and neck. And the 480 is in a league of it's own while the 580 is trading blows with the 5970, a dual GPU card I might add. I do have to applaud AMD (ATI back then) for getting the chip right the first time, unlike nVidia. They dominated the market for quite some time in the DX11 field. Their cards are great value for the performance you get even to this day, but like I said if you want raw power nVidia is the only way to go.

6950 and 6970 will be single GPU cards Caymen Pro and Caymen XT respectively. While the 6990 will be the dual GPU Antilles. Don't forget nVidia manufactured a dual GPU card as well, the 295, which was an absolute beast at the time and still pushing frames like a champ even today with the newer cards. If they get a dual GPU card out then competition will be fierce. I'm looking forward to the 69xx release and I have no doubt that they will be great cards, but as history shows nVidia will probably come out on top again.

rugis5291d ago

I doubt that. ATI has really upped their game in terms of performance for price.

EditorAtGNG5291d ago

Well I ain't no expert, but I know what does two cards have besides ridiculous power and amazing performance - price. I'll have to sell my soul to own one :(

dirthurts5291d ago

I won't buy either one, but AMD is the clear winner here.
I'll wait for the 5870 to drop to dirt cheap and be rolling. Or maybe add another 5850 to my mix.

AKS5291d ago

I'm sticking to the GTX 460 (maybe 2 in SLI) until the price drops. I am impressed with both AMD and nVidia, though. They are producing some excellent cards.

bviperz5291d ago

I like both camps because they keep pushing each other and we end up with the best regardless. I've been running SLI for awhile and may continue just upgrade to a single 580. For now...

Surprise I don’t see the usual suspect blasting anti consumer when Sony raised their price.

I guess they will pop up when Sony do it also lol

oh trust.

when sony follows suit, a shitstorm is about to happen

At this point, the whole damn country is being anti-consumer.
