"Microsoft has explained the recent hike in Xbox Live subscription costs and pointed towards Xbox 360 exclusives as justification that gamers are getting their money's worth"

Gears, Halo, and timed exclusive COD map pack = a price hike?

FACEPALM!

DORMIN3270d ago

There is absolutely no justification for raising prices of something that has almost always been free since the dawn of internets.

MURKERR3270d ago (Edited 3270d ago )

please can the 360 owners tell me if you agree with this? A price hike to pay to play online games you have BOUGHT on an online capable machine you already BOUGHT?

More to the point Greenburg needs to clarify his '45' million sold because firstly thats more than ms's financial statement for the shareholders and also the actual statement clarifies that its 'Sold to retailers' (shipped). therfore greenburg is not lying but misleading people which for a multi-billion dollar company is plain wrong, an i hope ms finally get investigated for this as its probably the only way to put a stop to this and finally get some straight answers.

Seriously ms gag greenburg

seinfan3270d ago

With a mug like that guy, his only option is to be an asshole.

Yi-Long3270d ago (Edited 3270d ago )

.. although I do have one, just like I have a PS3 I'm happy with.

But obviously, statements like these are bullshit. Exclusives sell consoles, but shouldn't be a reason to hike up a price for an online service that's too expensive anyway.

edit: Just look at that face in the picture... what a major douchebag! Just makes me LOL!

Dragun6193270d ago

Exclusives huh,... So I hear MS is spending $500 million for advertising Kinect.

imvix3270d ago (Edited 3270d ago )

So long as people keep paying, Microsoft can keep hiking the price. People need to vote with their $. Look at what happened when Microsoft tried the same shit with the PC community. No one paid, Microsoft made their service free. Xbox users either need to stop paying or stop crying.

Same should be applied to the recent crap with DLC's people seriously need to stop putting up with this crap.

pimpmaster3270d ago (Edited 3270d ago )

i prefer the 360 as my console but i hate MS and everything they do. so basically their raising the price because they wasted millions to have the COD map packs delayed on ps3 for 3 years.. something that doesnt even fucking affect us AND top it off with the fact that we still have to pay 15$ for the map packs!!! gears and halo are you joking? theres hardly a year without a halo game cause they keep whoring the franchise out. they pushed back gears to next holiday season. i used the ESPN app and it sucks ass.theres absolutely no reason for the price hike other than cause they want to fuck all of us 360 owners out of our hard earned money. sorry for the rant but i just hate MS so much now, and ive had a 360 since launch(multiple of course by now)

MasterGuru3270d ago

Hey! Greenberg is right! LIVE's price hike is justified by the amount of exclusives available on the 360. Uncharted, Killzone, LittleBigPlanet, Metal Gear Solid 4, Gran Turismo, Demon's Souls, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, God Of War, Heavy Rain, Infamous, Resistance, The Last Guardian, MAG, MLB, Modnation Racers, 3D Dot, Ratchet N Clank, Socom 4, Twisted Metal, Yakuza, etc........oh wait..........

Wh15ky3270d ago (Edited 3270d ago )

"please can the 360 owners tell me if you agree with this? A price hike to pay to play online games you have BOUGHT on an online capable machine you already BOUGHT"... OVER A BROADBAND CONNECTION YOU ALREADY PAY YOUR ISP FOR?

Sorry MURKERR, couldn't resist finishing your question for you.

MURKERR3270d ago (Edited 3270d ago )

I was to stunned to think straight anyway

basically theres a price hike to keep ps3 owners getting DLC till maybe a month later.

Congratulations ms you have finally ushered in many of the good hearted public to keep up your childish fanboy war with sony.

Now omega,n4ps3g,the mart and the crew really are employed by microsoft in this console war

Winter47th3270d ago (Edited 3270d ago )

Exclusives that we host on OUR connection for a service that people ONLY want to play online through while it's free on EVERY other platform? wow, Greenburg must think of the Xbox360 fans as real sheep, I guess he's right.

Nobody gives a damn about Netflix or Facebook on the Xbox360, but how do you justify paying to play games that you're not providing proper gaming servers for?

The only exclusive worth a damn is Gears of War, and the online is a catastrophic mess.

DelbertGrady3270d ago

I'm a 360 fan and I don't agree with the price hike. I think it's bs.

badz1493270d ago

there is not enough facepalm on earth to come along with the BS being spread by this guy! but you have to give it to him! when it comes to shameless crap, no one, I mean really, NO ONE can top Greenburg!

ComboBreaker3270d ago (Edited 3270d ago )

PS3 gamers don't get charge.

But when Microsoft get an exclusive, 360 gamers get charge with a price hike?

That's outrageous!!!

Boody-Bandit3270d ago (Edited 3270d ago )

Well that is exclusive advertising. Maybe that is what Greenburg meant by exclusives. /s

The sad part is MS considers games like Black Ops to be exclusive because of their DLC deal with Activision. They try to pedal off multiplatform titles as exclusives. Yet these multiplatform titles pull in fantastic numbers on the PS3 and Sony doesn't pay through the nose for those exclusive deals and huge advertising budgets. In actuality Sony probably pulls in more revenue for those titles when you add that into the equation. <- Another thing most people don't consider when they talk numbers / sales on here.

MS raised the price of XBL because they knew their userbase would pay. That was their only justification. MS needs to pull the money from some place to warrant their advertising budgets to their share holders. XBL is their cash cow. Mine runs out mid 2011. As of now I have no plans to renew. I'm not interested in the direction they are headed.

gamingdroid3270d ago (Edited 3270d ago )

I'm actually baffled that no-one reacted to the flamebait article. If you read the source, MS says:

"Now what we've always been very passionate about is that quality needs to be there, but more importantly, the consistency. So if I'm playing Halo: Reach, Gears of War, Call of Duty, the consistency of the service and the experience needs to be there regardless of what that entertainment application is.

"So that has been critical. As you can imagine, the costs associated with maintaining a service at that level and making sure all of those features are consistent, we're hitting that quality bar, we're adding the customer service infrastructure necessary, we're accommodating all of the same social features and functionality too, there's a cost. Infrastructure costs, of course. And we're continuing to bring more and more content."

Which he is talking about the infrastructure, social functionality, quality and bringing more content.

Then he finally talks about the exclusives as an addition and how membership increases:

"In 2002 it was strictly multiplayer gaming," he said. "Now we get those Call of Duty map packs before anybody else does. We've got Gears and Halo, of course, as exclusives. We continue to get exclusives on the service as well. And we've gone from 400,000 members in our first year to 25 million.

Either way, MS charges a fee. Don't like it, get over it! They will never remove it as long as their service is popular.

At least he is not telling you that you will work extra to pay for it!

ALFAxD_CENTAURO3270d ago

Another ridiculous statement.

What are the exclusives? Compared to Sony or Nintendo is just ridiculous.

HolyOrangeCows3270d ago

Something you already pay for is worth paying more for.

LOL

bviperz3269d ago

I'm sorry, but a rip off is a rip off. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING justifies paying extra for XBL. If you take away the common denominator between all the platforms, which is gaming online, and you stack em up and compare, you'll see XBL is a rip-off. Sure it's better then what the PSN currently offers, but the PSN is free. On the other hand, PC blows both PSN and XBL away and guess what? It's free too. Developers don't charge folks extra to play on their dedicated servers, why should MS? Hell, majority of the services isn't even on their infrastructure OR servers, so wtf is Greenburg talking about? Oh, it's an MS access fee to get to those services.

GameGambits3270d ago

...The MSoft's library of exclusive is god damn microscopic at this point compared to PS3, Wii, and PC.

You actually think an extra $10.00 a year is worth playing 1 exclusive title a year? This year was Reach and Fable---both using arachaic hosting that's been how scrub designers design online since last generation.

I'd pay the extra 10 if every game got dedicated servers for no lag, but that is not the case.

Greenturd can go blow a pack of donkeys.

PS360fanboy3270d ago

I think he meant XBLA exclusives dude...

LiquifiedArt3270d ago

If you keep paying it, then don't complain. You need to vote with your WALLET!

thewhoopimen3270d ago

EVILDEAD3603270d ago

In 2002 it was strictly multiplayer gaming," he said. "Now we get those Call of Duty map packs before anybody else does. We've got Gears and Halo, of course, as exclusives. We continue to get exclusives on the service as well. And we've gone from 400,000 members in our first year to 25 million.

"So during that time, we've definitely got to fund it, and we want to add more and more and more. ESPN is a great example. No extra charge for Xbox Live Gold members. But we want to continue to bring that content in. We also want to continue to innovate on all dimensions, whether it's social, entertainment, or gaming. So there you go."

At the end of the day..it costs money to run Live..if it wasnt worth the money people wouldve evacuated the Xbox brand a long time ago..

Yeah...it's clear that Xbox Live has driven game sales of Call of Duty on the 360..and that Halo and Gears drove the community numbers through the roof..but Greenburg did not say that the price hike was strictly due to the games..

The truth is that millions love it and Microsft has made over a billion dollars through the subscriptions. The argument that the service has continued to improve and add things for the last 5 years+ is as valid as the arguments justifying PSN+.

Love it or hate..Live is key to the 360s success and will be around as long as the masses believe in it's worth..I'll take ESPN anyday

"Love it or hate..Live is key to the 360s success and will be around as long as the masses believe in it's worth..I'll take ESPN anyday "

I can't believe you're actually trying to defend this crap....I bought live on the $30 deal just so i can avoid paying again for the price hike. This is the only time I ever decided to pay for live, and quite frankly, WHY ARE PEOPLE PAYING FOR EXTRA STUFF YOU CAN DO ON A PC FOR FREE?

I mean honestly the only reason why I did it was so that I can play Reach and Fable 3 online, but that's about it.

EVILDEAD3603270d ago

'WHY ARE PEOPLE PAYING FOR EXTRA STUFF YOU CAN DO ON A PC FOR FREE?'

It's because it's a CONSOLE..

Look..this isn't sitting at desk or a laptop with a keyboard and mouse

This is sitting on the couch with your 65 inch HDTV connnected to 3 of your best friends in a party chat playing Halo Reach ON Legendary and Multi till 3 in the morning..

PC is PC..console is console..we are all on N4G.com..because we ALL own PCs..but to complain that Live should be free because Steam is is silly

It's all about preference..I've loved Live for my profile..the achievements..Last FM..Netflix..watching the same movie over live with family..and the way it truly connects you to your friends..you always know exacly what they are doing..party chat etc..

For me Xbox Live and achievements are the only reason I buy all my multi-plat games on the 360..

But, let's keep it real..if it was free..we'd all take it free..

But, it's not and it and they raised it $10 dollars after years and years of it being the same price.again if people don't want it..they dont have to buy it..but like me once you invest years and have a bunch of great gamers and friends that you game with on a daily basis..you won't want to give it up..

"

The problem with that, is that you're accepting something which they're just basically getting away with. I mean it's one thing to pay for live, it's another to just go ahead and accept the things companies do without any questioning. By you paying for it, in the long run they don't careless, it's just more money to them.

I'm not asking for it to be free, because that's a battle lost by even thinking it. I'm more concerned at the fact that the person in question in the article, comes up with such a excruciating lame explaination as to why they hiked the price. Why haven't any other said companies decide to do that with anything extra? Look at how Activision tried to hike up PC games without any extra incentives, and the reception it got, look at how Ubisoft tried the same thing. Now the only times you see a PC game that's priced higher than normal pricing, is when they include either all the DLC, or an extra game.

Not everyone asked for these extra things.
Why should some people that only wanted to play online should pay for those that want to use Facebook, Twitter, and other unnecessary add-ons onto a console?

RBLAZE19883270d ago (Edited 3270d ago )

that Greenburg said Live users get all these new features and exclusives like ESPN for no additional charge to the user.

"So during that time, we've definitely got to fund it, and we want to add more and more and more. ESPN is a great example. No extra charge for Xbox Live Gold members."

lol. No extra charge? You mean like the extra 10 bucks they added onto XBL gold?

Also to clarify what evildead360 said, we're on n4g because we all own pc's? I go on n4g and post from my ps3's web browser so explain that one?

Craig Davidson, Xbox Live Marketing cited Xbox 360 exclusives as a primary reason -
“In 2002 it was strictly multiplayer gaming,” he said. “Now we get those Call of Duty map packs before anybody else does. We’ve got Gears and Halo, of course, as exclusives. We continue to get exclusives on the service as well"
[\quote]

I think CALL OF DUTY timed exclusive map packs are the reason for the hike. ACT wanted a share of xbox live. THQ said recently ACT was already charging people through map packs. IMO this actually means map pack price + $10 (xbox live hike) right to ACT bank account.

HDgamer3270d ago

Name 10 disc based exclusives this year that aren't multiplatform or actually available on the console.

lazysey3270d ago (Edited 3270d ago )

This shouldn't bother you as much as it does to us XBOX 360 owners.

Also, what exclusives? XBOX has no exclusives.

Am I proud I'm paying $15 (potentially) $20 for dlc and delaying it 3 years for PS3 owners? No. Is it because Microsoft has started to see that the PS3 install base is heavily catching up and are looking at ways to secure a franchise that more than half of its users are casual gamers that are looking for the core experience and not the extra content, because they're afraid of sony free online plus core call of duty online experience?

Yes.

Why do I pay for XBOX LIVE services? Because not every one of my friends has the ability to all log in on msn or has a to a high maintenance PC to do all that communication XBOX already has very nicely built in as well as the range of content and features that attract me as gamer and as an individual.

Looking at the consumer, there might be things that XBOX 360 will have, that attracts the common mass of potential consumers because of its range of content for a games console.

Sure, oh you can just go out and buy a PS3 and avoid a subscription fee, but sony's lack of creating an experience for the core user to get hooked in (i.e the CONSTANT demand for cross-game chat) was either late or psn indefinitely lacks the features that has already set the XBOX Live standards for every living human being who wants to have a fun experience, feel obligated that its the only route they have to a community well established.

In the end, you're paying $69.99 a year for XBOX Live.
The year before that you and 25 million other people have been paying $59.99. In short terms, its pretty hypocritical that you've been paying $60 dollars at all for a ISP connection you already pay for.

If anything, those 25 million subscribers will pay the extra $10.

Substance1013270d ago (Edited 3270d ago )

"Because not every one of my friends has the ability to all log in on msn or has a to a high maintenance PC to do all that communication XBOX already has"

Sorry dude i agree with everything else you say, however calling PC high maintenance is being misimformed. In fact once you consider:

Consoles cost 10-20usd more per game,
Microsoft charges you to go online
Xbox fails alot
Super expensive hardware accessories for the Xbox

PC is much much more cost effective then any console can be and yea i agree its rediculous paying Microsoft so much just to be able to go online.

coldfoot3270d ago (Edited 3270d ago )

Those are total subscribers, about half of them are gold, rest are silver, oh wait, they've changed that to Xbox Live FREE, so the MILF's buying Kinect won't be scared to make an account.

n to the b3270d ago (Edited 3270d ago )

you say pc isn't high maintenance; but you only listed reasons why pc isn't more expensive. what are your reasons for thinking the pc isn't 'high maintenance' please?

MNicholas3270d ago (Edited 3270d ago )

the lack of upcoming exclusives means they need to make money some other way.

Sure, they're making a lot of money charging customers for something that's free on PC, PS3, and Wii but, with so many willingly shelling out major bucks for the monthly subcription (rather than annual), at some point Microsoft have to ask themselves ... "just how far can we take this?"

talltony3270d ago (Edited 3270d ago )

I think they have no problem raising the price of xbox live because of the "Lack of exclusives". They know that the next big exclusive game they have coming is Gears 3 and I think they realize people will not renew again after that game. So their state of mind is to make as much money as fast as they can before Gears 3 is releassed.

tacosRcool3270d ago

They charge a lot for everything nowdays with their overpriced DLC that game developers already charge

Christopher3270d ago (Edited 3270d ago )

Huge reading comprehension issue. He's talked about exclusives as a manner in which they've expanded the number of people using their service to experience the exclusives, not as the core reason.

The main reason is because of increased user base and expanded features as mentioned in the article. Though I will admit it could have been explained in a better way.

This is horrible journalism.

gypsygib3270d ago (Edited 3270d ago )

Really, MS is just paying to keep stuff off PS3. Live users would have gotten the DLC regardless, only PSN users would get it too.

MS (and Live users) are just paying for stuff they would have gotten anyways. I think given the option of paying to keep stuff off PS3 or both systems having the DLC, I think most people rather save their money.

Live users' extra money isn't resulting in EXTRA content, only EXCLUSIVE content that they would have already had. This only benefits MS and costs the Live user.

Nice try Greenberg but we're not THAT stupid.

lazysey3270d ago

You nailed it. The only people who benefit from this deal is Activision. So if you're looking for justice, just bully their children. Because you're paying for Koticks kids happy meal.

number473270d ago

I'd be willing to bet that Omega would make a better spinster than green. I mean the 'exclusives' which the 360 has none of? Is the reason... please

I'd say the reason for Live costing a fee is the polish & integration with every title, but even then, hiking that price is a bit of a stretch, considering its only really vital for online gaming. Which yes, is big.. but that price is absurd compared to:

1. PS3
2. Wii
3. PC gaming
4. Steam offers the same features for online play/profiles/intergration.

Microsoft's console is the only one with such a pay-to-play dynamic.

Chatting is hardly worth the fee.

From the horse's mouth. Those are your "exclusives". Honestly, console gaming is becoming more and more of a sham. Sony has some different 1st/ 2nd party software, Ninty too, but really the micro-transactions and the consumer's willingness to bend over and take the corporate shaft (from any of the big three), to prosthelytize the corporate shill makes me embarrassed to be a gamer at times.

I haven't bought a new game since Castlevania and I don't intend to. I'll wait for a mark-down to make the DLC (required to complete the game experience) hit not so hard, or the inevitable GOTY edition.

leonlion3270d ago (Edited 3270d ago )

For that money I'd expect dedicated game servers not p2p!

Games would be cheap

Although there's no way apple could buy sony

simplyRealistic183270d ago (Edited 3270d ago )

you an idiot, apple release a new phone with 2 new feature every year, they make you pay over $200 for something that cost only over $60 to make,

they make you buy an ipad now and dont give you a a 5mp camera and Front facing camera a, only because they know they will include it next year so they can have a reason to release it

I guarantee if apple ran ps3 online wouldnt be free

thewhoopimen3270d ago

The examples you gave are just plain retarded. Apple has never charged a subscription fee for their app store, iTunes. They know they can earn money via microtransactions, they don't need to resort to subscriptions. I would venture to say if apple ran Sony, Sony wouldn't have the trouble marketing here in the us as they have against ms. Finally, being a proud owner of an iPad. I don't particularly see anyone with a net book utilizing their 5mp cameras for video chats... And you know why? It's because net book or iPad are largely both too underpowered to host concurrent video chat sessions AND do productivity.

In fact, not having a camera on this iPad is EXACTLY why the iPad is spurring adoption rates into the corporate network so readily. It's light, uncluttered, fast, and doesn't compromise corporate security. Perhaps the market isn't just geared toward the consumer don't you know...
