Winter is here, but the cooler months are heating up for Xbox 360 owners. Changes have been made to the Xbox website, dashboard, subscriptions, and gaming itself.
This price hike only brings it in line with what other countries are paying. In any case, various website charge less for a 12 month subscription than Microsoft does anyway.
That^^^ That right there is why MS will always charge for online play and other features that are free EVERYWHERE ELSE.
but it is not as worth 60 bucks for me especially when gaming servers are exactly the same as PS3's. and PS3 exclusive games have more dedicated server than Xbox exclusives...
Cross game chat along is worth it, you know what I mean? oh wait you don't
to be honest the thing that makes me pay for xbl is the chat sound quality, party chat, and music while playing .... if ps3 had those things (that are not such a big deal but i really loved them) i would play online in ps3 and never go back to xbox
This is Bullcrap. And mainly for the reason that Ms with Kinect, has every intention to get the family on Live. That is $60 per account of 3-6 family memebers average. That is a system, plus Kinect, plus controllers, plus $180-$360(More than the damn system) just to play online. On top of Netflix, Sky, ESPN, Hulu fees.
This year: $60 ain't so bad. Next year : $70 ain't so bad. . . . etc. Exactly why I didn't buy a new Xbox 360 when my old one died. I know better than to be suckered out of money especially when PC, PS3, and Wii do it for free.
@NecrumSlavery: actually microsoft offer family Live Gold deals where you get 2 adult + 2 children memberships for LESS than the price of 2 regular gold memberships. its a great deal.
XBL is AU$100 in Australia. About half the price of Kinect. Thats US$98.83 is case you're interested.
I pay for xbox live so I can talk to friends when gaming, even if we are not playing the same game. Also, $5.00 a month is not a big deal, I spend $5.00 a day on lunch, if I don't buy lunch one day I have xbox live for the month. I really don't mind. It's people's preference, and my preference is talking to friends.
in all fairness, MS was charging for many features before they were available on other consoles and then other consoles followed suit. I don't think MS should have to change what they have been doing, and I'm not saying that you said that, but if people are fine with spending money on live then so be it, its not my money.
Continuing to have the "privilege" to pay for cross/party chat (The only feature that vaguely improves the actual GAMING experience) + $10 more, per year.
really? in Qatar (middle east) its 230 QR about 63$
but what's all this about PSN not having cross-game chat? I've had plenty of chats with friends in different games - both voice and text. Or is this not universal? Or supported by all games? And I don't mean exchanging messages, I mean using the "Start a New Chat" option. Isn't this X-game chat? As opposed to the disagree fairy, if someone could answer this, that would be great.
My PS3 and PC does this online stuff for free. That is why my 360 never goes online.
some people might not think that talking to their friends is a big deal, but i do. Every time i bring it up i get bashed with "whod wanna talk while they play games anyways?" comments. But of course thats only on N4G. Anyone who says that they dont want cross game chat is not being realistic. Every night, and i mean every single night that i sign into XBL, there are friends who want to talk to me about their day, work, etc. and none of us would want to sign out of our respective game just to do that. Just last night i was relaxing and playing Halo Reach while talking to a friend and co-worker who was playing Fallout New Vegas about a disagreement that i had with the manager at work. We would have had to both sign out of our games and basically do nothing while while we talk, which would get annoying. Id hate to not have cross-game chat. Its a great feature, especially when XBL and cross game chat is the only way to keep in touch with some people.
for those complaining about or using xchat as a argument point.. ms patented the method.. so its hard to find a workaround .. it makes it difficult for a company to want to do it, not worthy of charging.. it would be free on xbl if people werent so willing to pay
and doesn't remove them. And that my console won't brick of freeze games because of this update. Advantages of a software company I guess
Broken things are already bricked. Just saying.
Sony has not removed one thing from the PS3 that the average gamer gives two shits about. The only people who like to complain about it are people who have nothing better to do than cry about stuff on the internet. Edit: Since launch day I have had 0 issues with FW updates.
"Since launch day I have had 0 issues with FW updates." That's cause they don't do anything.
The advantage of owning a console designed and built by a company that makes hardware. Software can be improved, shit hardware is shit hardware.
wow... you just reached a new low in trollin...
"Oh thank you MS, can I have more please?" lol... MS just keeps ramming it in harder, and xbox owners just keep taking it with a smile on their face. Some nice changes, but upgrades shouldn't cost extra. The price should be dropping for this service FIVE years into the console's life cycle. They've made their billions on it. But no, they just get greedier, and the fans are A-ok with it. Unbelievable.
Geeezzz. It's almost as if other people paying for XBL has an impact on your gaming experiance. Don't worry, you'll be $60 richer at the end of the year. Go buy a nice shirt or something. lmao!
Ok Jason your telling me you would pay $60-70 a year to have voice chat? What if the psphone let you have this along with music? You could get calls under your psn user name and it could link to your ps3 via Bluetooth along with a heat set or aux stereo mic/speaker kit? You could also get phone calls on a pay as you go plan. If you use too many minutes you month subcription would get used up. The psphone would kill the zune, iPhone, and cross game chat with one device yet you could save a lot of money. The online structure would still be free with this setup yet the psn pay version is directly connected to this phone which could be easily used on the next console.
Thats funny because on my PC I cross chat with everyone no matter what game we're playing through free programs like vent & mumble ;)
These "improvements" mostly suck. The Netflix "search" option is a Netflix improvement, not a Live improvement. And every other console already has it. Know what I want improved in Live? Get rid of the f*cking advertising. Stop trying to sell me on Kinect every time I turn on my 360. Basically, take all of the NON-system/gaming related crap and hide it in a corner somewhere...if it's not related to MY games and MY system, get it out of MY main menu. Because right now Live's interface looks like a corporate marketing drone took a sh*t all over it. I mean, I'm PAYING for the service, so why am I still subjected to this? Oh, and the cutesy Wii-inspired stuff is embarrassing. Don't treat me like a 5 year old while you're force-feeding me corporate bullsh*t. This is why I tend to back my PS3 more than my 360 in these discussions. At least Sony pretends to respect their customers.
Then I wouldn't pay for it. Simple. If it bothers you that much get a PS3.
@Shepherd 214 I'd rarely use it, if ever at all, and for the exact reasons you listed. I don't want to be playing a game and hearing stories of co-workers or anyone else. When I play a multi-player game that requires chat, I want to talk about the game. When I play a single player game I don't want to chat about anything with anyone. I can't see the draw of chatting it up constantly, it's a distraction to something that I use to take me away from having to chat it up all the time. /no thanks I'm fine with you liking it and to each their own, but I'm also perfectly realistic in my reasoning. :) -CadDad
excuse me but... you ps3 fanatics should be happy that xbox live is charging their customers and psn not i mean you guys hate xboxlive and everything xbox and of course their users. instead of been here bashing live why not get out of everything xbox360 in n4g and enjoy everething ps3?

Damage control much
oh yea sooo much.
I honestly can't tell if you're trying to be doubly sarcastic, or defending the price hike by rattling out a list of things they should be doing regardless. Like making the service easier/more accessible, especially for soccer mom gamers.
basically things looks different but they are the same!they should let at least silver members play the games online even if they cant talk with other people
Haha, I think some people take the non-game side of video games too seriously. Games = art. Game systems = who cares.
Now, tell me which of those you are really looking forward to and expecting to use REGULARLY. What things will you really notice much.
Ooooh neat I can actually SEE the ridiculous crap I'm buying for my avatar before I pay for it now? Who actually buys this stuff, anyway? How sad must one be to buy fake clothes for something no one ever really looks at? Same goes for Home on the PS3.
When I use to have my 360, I use to get pissed having to turn off my Xbox to reset the controller to position one. That's after playing with a fighting stick and forgetting to unplug it. That should have been added a long time ago.
Pretty interesting update. looking forward to getting it tommorrow. Where is my unlimited friends list though!
I just hate it because my internet provider won't get ESPN3 so the xbox won't either :(
i know right :( but we still get espn...good thing am jupmin over too fios soon
It is sad that Disney, parent company of espn, doesn't offer the option for me as a individual to pay for espn3 if my isp won't get it. I would pay, hell I pay for nba league pass broadband already. I just want a choice.
I guess you get what you pay for. If it's worth the cost increase, I'm all for it.
I read an article when this was first announced that made the point that we are really getting a good deal for all the improvements Microsoft has done prior to this update/price increase. Considering the worth of all the previous features, $10 at this point seems money well spent.
I couldn't get the renew link to work on Xbox.com
moar price hikes and ads inbound.
everyone pays for there internet so paying microsoft to use it shouldnt be happening
I know! Netflix should be free too!
you get unlimited rentals of tv shows and films with netflix so i know and dont expect that to be free at all but people are forking out lots of money every month for internet so having to pay £40 or $60 a year so you can actually use your internet on live is not fair tbh especially when its only console out all 3 that charge to play online
I think he meant it should be free to use on the Xbox. It should be there for all Xbox 360 owners to use without having to pay for LIVE. I don't have to pay twice to use it on my PS3 or Wii so why do I have to on my 360? Same as online play.
Shazz, People do pay for Internet yes. But you cannot compare Internet to XBL. You NEED Internet if you want XBL so its a must (Internet). I'm not saying XBL should be free or not.
Don’t like it then don’t pay simple as that, I have both 360 and PS3 and I have not bought xbox live since 2006, I bought a Playstation head set and play with it online and haven’t look back and this is the reason I buy all my multi on my PS3 and only exclusives games on my 360, still I love them both though…
if you renew your xbox live sub its 39 bucks, so the increase wouldnt go into affect until next year for many of us. they are offering that deal to all subs so whats all the crying about.
i think its funny how many people are complaining about a ten dollar increase on the yearly subscription. yes we all know that we are paying but after using both systems, the 360 wins in online gaming. cross gaming chat is not a feature i would like to lose. basically im paying for one extra game a year to play online as i do everyday. im fine with it.
I've used both too and I think PSN works just as well as XBL. Maybe its your connection? Either way game chat is a bit overrated IMO. That's my take though. I don't like to be yelled at and be called racist names while gaming ^^
i like trash talking to little kids who run there mouths :P but seriously, im referring to talking to friends. as i may be playing reach, i can talk to four other people who could be playing fable III, cod or any other game.
Syncing trophies <==3%=================> Live updating is >>>>>>> PSN
"I don't like to be yelled at and be called racist names while gaming" has absolutely zer0 to do with CROSS-GAME chat. have you really used both as you claim??
I've never tried this while playing a game but; There is this thing you click on top of your friends list, add your friends to it and you can chat. I'll try it while playing, if that works, then PS3 does support Cross-game chat. If not, then it wont.
From my experiences its exactly as I stated. I'll PM you.
I actually find the voice quality to be much better on PSN. It always sounds like people are sitting across the room from their headsets while talking. Where on the PS3 it sounds like they are sitting on th ecouch next to me. I am hoping this is taken care of in the dashboard update though.
m$ need to lower price and add moar features like this
That alone is worth the price hike, nice one ms
"Browser based Avatar editor: Edit your avatar and preview avatar items before purchase" Couldn't we already do that? I mean when I went to get my avatar something from the shop, it show it on him. So how is that new?
theyre talking about doing this from your PC, not your console. you can now dress up your avatar from live.xbox.com, previewing items like you do on the xbox.
i haven't even turned on my 360 in months nor bought a game for it in months lol. i might as well give it to my sis because she wants to play the sims 3 on it.
the biggest thing this update brings for me (and the rest of us Aussies) is Foxtel for Xbox Live. for $19.50 a month we can get our pay tv directly through the 360! having just upgraded to an unlimited download (with no shaping either!) super-fast internet plan that gets ~6Mbps downloads, its a great and cheap way for me to get Foxtel. for those without unlimited downloads though, its supposed to chew through about 800MB an hour of live tv. ive had the new update for weeks through the preview program, and its fantastic in every way.
