Crysis 2 BETA footage gives you a taste of things to come

GB: Someone’s uploaded some rather good looking footage from the closed BETA of Crysis 2, from what we have seen, the game does look promising and might prove to be a great multiplayer experience when it comes out next year.

Does not look that good, guess that's just me though.

Pandamobile4933d ago

It's the console version. What did you expect, Crysis 1 level graphics?

Pedantic914933d ago

I did not play the first one (not strong enough PC) so i wouldn't really know, sorry.

D4RkNIKON4933d ago (Edited 4933d ago )

I think that it is funny how they are boasting that Crysis 2 will be the best looking console shooter even though it will be multiplat. Killzone 3 owns Crysis on consoles hands F*in down.

KZ3 has an engine built from the ground up to preform best on the PS3. Not only that but this is the second game GG are using with this engine so they will be able to improve it from the last game.

BrianG4933d ago (Edited 4933d ago )

Honestly at this time in the industry with what other developers are pushing out, yes, I kind of would expect Crysis 1 level graphics Pandamobile.

I don't expect full anit aliasing or anything like that, but as far as graphics, yes.

@ Pedrami, def agree, honestly I expected much better based on what they were promising. This video surprised me, not in a good way. And yeah I know its Alpha, but other games in Alpha look much better.

iamgoatman4933d ago

@BrianG

"I kind of would expect Crysis 1 level graphics Pandamobile."

I think you're being a bit too optimistic, considering no console game has come anywhere near the first Crysis. So hoping for that level is possibly asking a bit much out of what is essentially pretty out-dated hardware.

HolyOrangeCows4933d ago

I hope all of that screen tear is due to a crappy capture.

The sound is pretty off, so there's a good chance that is the reason.

Traveler4933d ago

The gameplay looks fun and I am sure the PC version will look beastly, but this version seems to have some performance issues. It makes me worried for the PS3 version. They haven't even showed the PS3 version and if the 360 version runs this bad I shudder to think what the PS3 version might look like. Of course they might have other reasons for not showing the PS3 version and it still might end up looking good, but I can't help but be worried.

StanLee4932d ago

Rage is the best looking game I've seen on consoles. Crysis 2 is kind of disappointing after the hype.

Rage running on XBox 360 http://www.youtube.com/watc...

The Wood4932d ago (Edited 4932d ago )

that rage engine eats this crysis engine easily

As it stands now taking their development stages into consideration its Rage vs Killzone 3 for the graphics crown easily. This crysis engine is a little underwhelming at the moment...The final build my tell a different tale but as of now its not fighting for top spot

Heartnet4932d ago

Did he mention graphics ? looks pretty average gameplay to me :)

and yeh graphics looks bout average to :)

I don't like the crosshair, I know that will bug me.

Pandamobile4933d ago

Crysis 1 had the option to change the crosshair to your liking. If I recall, there were about 10 different crosshair variants, ranging from the three lines (which I liked the best/default), four lines, small circles, animated circles,

-Alpha4933d ago (Edited 4933d ago )

It's very similar to COD, but I do have hope that it's good considering it's from Free Radical!

However, it sounds sort of tacked on, and too basic. Hoping the SP is strong too.

theEx1Le4933d ago

This beta is pre-alpha code is it not.

AEtherbane4933d ago

Is made for a PC, hence why I wont get a console version.

Snakefist304933d ago (Edited 4933d ago )

I agree with U!! Crysis is made for pc.Maybe they wanted to make more profits on consoles or they wanted to prove that they are developers on consoles too.

pr0digyZA4933d ago

Probably a bit of both, they want the extra sales plus it's a good way of letting other developers see your engine and maybe license it. I know that they tried that with the first engine but if I'm not mistaken only one or two developers ever used it, if any. So this is a way to get it working on consoles which wasn't possible with the first one as they said it wouldn't work.

visualb4933d ago

looks GOOD, but no where near the PC quality.

still, I buy games for the gameplay, and Crysis has an interesting gameplay dynamic =) might check it out when it comes out for PS3 =D

FanboyPunisher4933d ago

Cant believe people actually held hope to this, 720 = barfed up graphics.

If you care about the best, get this for PC.

MGRogue20174933d ago

Been playing the beta & it's quite good.

You do notice the FPS drop at times but gotta' remember that it's a beta so performance will most likely improve in the final build.

cyborg4933d ago

for non-Killzone ,Call of Duty and Battlefield game this is looking mighty fine so far to be honest

wwm0nkey4933d ago

Actually its an alpha we are stress testing the engine so they purposly overloaded certin things to see just how much the 360 could handle. I personally LOVE this game I always get 20+ kills a game with the SCAR, this game is just soooooo much fun.

MGRogue20174933d ago (Edited 4933d ago )

Actually.. It's a stress test for their servers.

FrigidDARKNESS4933d ago

its the video quality the reason it looks bad.....definitely jas more colors on screen than KZ3.

Simon_Brezhnev4933d ago

I guess you saw all the levels in KZ3 already just like you said KZ3 has a lot of screen tearing.

kaveti66164933d ago

How come GG hasn't shown any of the colorful levels they keep talking about? Even in their alpha test videos, all the levels are filled with dark colors?

raztad4933d ago (Edited 4933d ago )

lol what? it is all about colors? That video has a very bland palette btw.

Looks good overall.

@Simon

KZ3 is v-locked. 0% screen tearing.

visualb4933d ago

Crysis 2 BETA footage gives you a taste of things to come

where the hell is KZ mentioned? fucking troll

Traveler4933d ago

Color palette has nothing to do with the game engine or graphics in a technical sense. It's an art direction decision, nothing more. Neon pink is just as easy to render as gray or brown.

tdrules4933d ago

I'll never understand why when doing betas developers would rather have a beta on a fixed hardware platform than the most varied platform in the world

wwm0nkey4933d ago (Edited 4933d ago )

This is NOT a beta, this is a stress test, they are seeing how much they can do on the 360. This is just to get an idea of what they have to cut back on to make the game preform a constant 30 FPS because right now its pulling about 25, I had a game where the audio randomly cut out and everyone had a constant frame rate of 30-35 FPS. Yet even though its an alpha this game is fucking incredible, the gameplay designers really knew what they where doing.

EDIT: Ok disagree for stating a fact, gotta love N4G -_-

Pandamobile4933d ago

You get a disagree because you are wrong. It's a network stress test more than anything. They're testing out the load on their servers, not the performance on the Xbox 360. I'm sure they can test the 360 performance internally.

wwm0nkey4933d ago (Edited 4933d ago )

You REALLY dont think they are also testing out the engine as well?

granted yes you where right about it being for the servers but still they could have waited till the engine was stable to do a server test too, its obvious they are testing more than that.

Pandamobile4933d ago (Edited 4933d ago )

Obviously they're looking for gameplay bugs and stuff too, that's implicit with any sort of beta, I'm just saying, the main reason for them testing the 360 version over the PS3 version or the PC version is because they know Crysis 2 will sell more on the 360 than the PS3, so they're doing the network stress test on that platform, and in the case of the PC version of the game, Crytek doesn't run the PC servers. Users can host their own server or rent from providers like Gameservers.com or Hypernia.

My guess is that we'll see an closed, but easy to get into PC beta a month or so before release.

maxcer4933d ago

"You REALLY dont think they are also testing out the engine as well??

why would they need us to tell them about the "engine"? as if we knew how to optimize it better then they do. like the reply said its for stress testing and to a lesser extent, promotion. the internal testers at crytek are testing a newer build that has most likely fixed your worries about the sound/fps.

I'm still learning how to look for the differences. At first I was focusing on shadows for some reason but I don't think that changes much, is it reflections that change?

rashada071769d ago (Edited 1769d ago )

It is supposed to be simulating how light actually works- so yes if light is reflecting off a surface accurately it should show reflection or an effect that matches what you are looking at in the environment. Next time you play a game look at a puddle of water there may be just a "baked" in texture that if you aren't paying attention seems like it is reflecting but it isn't. I would say though if the light is reflecting more accurately I would think that would give more accurate shadows as well.
I am still not 100% sold on it- it looks okay but I can't get over the hardware price jump for better reflections..

Taz X141769d ago

While games won't look immensely better, it opens up more possibilities overall. Understandably, the price jump is huge. But, that can be said for being at the forefront for any new technology. I'm currently using a 2080ti and while I've played a few games that enable it, the gpu also plays everything else incredibly well so it's not like you're buying this tech for ONLY that option. Enthusiasts will pay top dollar to check out the newest things, but this will eventually become an everyday consumer and by then they'll have optimized and become a lot cheaper.

warriorcase1768d ago

Ray/path tracing can be used how the developer wants it to be. Tracing can be used to calculate shadows/lighting, reflection and even audio, where audio waves are calculated on the bounce off material types to simulate enviroment and echos accuratly.

Should also keep in mind that this ray/path tracing system is different and less accurate option from Nvidias RTX branded type. McFly's is a reshade that layers over the top of the game and therefor the quality will vary drastically. For example you can see nice reflection in the Star Wars demo here but it then introduces colour clipping with the light saber. On a video of GTA 5 for example it was incorrectly projecting a reflection of a red car onto the road which caused a very faint red glow on the ground around the car.

If you want to see a good example of a game developed with ray tracing reflection and lighting in mind then you could look up the youtube video of "Control - Exclusive E3 RTX GAMEPLAY Trailer".

DigitallyAfflicted1768d ago

It supposed to add more realistic light Not actually more light effects and explosions

traumadisaster1768d ago

I hate to say it but I’m fine with fake lights, shadows, reflections. I just kind of like the effect, it’s also great it saves resources for other things.

I’ve been checking out some original Xbox games on x360/x1x and the engine has fake light streaming in through a stained glass window, and I love it even though I know it’s not real time lighting. Heck it even shifts as I move about.

I’ve about convinced my self rt and hdr just doesn’t work for me. Before hdr I would even complain damn why are the headlights killing me they are so bright.

I notice most frame rate, then jaggies, then resolution; with the last two interchangeable depending.

Other day watched an enthusiast rave over 4k and the poor guy was in 1080p. I played the same game the night before and thought wow this is clean, I wonder if it’s 4k, but knew differently and I thought wow even resolution is not always important. The next day he apologized and was surprised he could be fooled.

RaidenBlack1768d ago

EA should have released the Crysis Trilogy Remaster for this gen.

FGHFGHFGH1763d ago

How come the lightsabers don't give off any light? Even in the EA star wars game the guy uses it to light up a dark cave. I guess if it is using frostbite it will support rtx cards.
