TGV PROTIP: Vanquish is not a “cover shooter”

Playing Platinum Games' Vanquish as a cover shooter?

Then you are playing it wrong. Forever.

I'm usually not a fan of the "you're playing it wrong" approach, as that usually lies in how well the game itself teaches you to play it, but in this case it seems it's warranted, based on both misconceptions of both game and genre expectations.

I really think Bulletstorm is going to fall under the same criticisms that Vanquish is receiving, because everyone's going to be all like "AREN'T I SUPPOSE TO HIDE BEHIND STUFF AND NOT GET SHOT?"

Heeeeeeeeeeeeell no. You are suppose to run and gun and boot-stomp the Hell out of your enemies.

RustyMagus5087d ago

Considering the game's called "Bulletstorm", and there's not a single chest-high-wall in sight in any gameplay trailer, I'm hoping the majority of gamers aren't that stupid.

Bulletstorm looks really amazing. The scene with the giant wheel rolling at you looks bad as hell. I hope it does well.

borisfett5087d ago

Hahahaha. This is brilliant!

Well said.

MGRogue20175087d ago (Edited 5087d ago )

... then why does the game have a "take cover" feature in the first place then??

borisfett5087d ago (Edited 5087d ago )

If you were given a box of crayons and asked to paint a rainbow, would you use only one colour?

It's one ability out of a dozen. It has its uses, but it's not meant to be the end all and be all of the game that so many people (who clearly suck at playing games) are treating it as.

NecrumSlavery5087d ago

There's so much shit you can do in Vanquish, its crazy. Its a cover shooter if you want, a matrix shooter, a punch and run. Your pick but cover helps the fingers heeels.

mastiffchild5087d ago

Simple. Because the suit's power can run dry and need to refill itself with energy you are sometimes left pretty powerless and need tiny breathers-that's where the cover comes in and you'll find it's no use staying there for longer as many attacks don't get stopped by it anyway while others destroy the cover. The cover, then, in my eyes, is there for those moments where you get caught short and need to refuel your suit and VERY little more than that as it doesn't work either in the way you should play the game or actually as cover for more than a few seconds.

It isn't anything LIKE Gears to play and I think when Mikami said Gears had been an influence on his thinking many writers just read WAY too much into it-maybe being released around the same breath as the derivative as all hell QT and also coming from Japan didn't help on this front either. Whatever, the cover DOES have a reason to be there but just isn't that big a part of the game and should only be used for tiny moments when you get your suit all puffed out. Yes?

borisfett5087d ago

I think most gamers have just been spoilt with skill-less cover shoots that the thought of having to do something more in a third person shooter besides hiding behind a block and firing random shots for five minutes is too much for their brains to process.

Sidology5087d ago

Because there are times when you can't be a complete badass and need to recharge. You know, for like two seconds, but then you can resume your badassity.

Hey, do you guys remember Destructoid's 5/10 review score for Vanquish? There's a funny quote from Destructoid at the back of the case stating that the game is "bloody terrific."

Sidology5087d ago

Wow, really? That's actually pretty hilarious.
