Videogame Stocks Down On September Sales Data‎

Shares of videogame publishers fell on Friday morning after the NPD Group reported disappointing sales data for the month of September--causing investors to question the health of the industry heading into the holiday season.

Late Thursday, NPD said sales of console game software in the U.S. dropped by 6% compared to the same month last year. Analysts had been looking for a gain in the low single-digit range, believing that the success of the blockbuster "Halo Reach" would offset weaknesses in other categories.

"Looking ahead, we think that the weakness in software sales likely continues in the next several months, given tougher comps and consumer interest in a handful of major franchises," Jeetile Patel of Deutsche Bank wrote in a note to clients on Friday.
