NPD: September Video Game Sales Drop 8 Percent

NPR: Nintendo, meanwhile, sold 403,000 of its handheld DS systems in the U.S., and 254,000 Wii consoles. Sony would not disclose how many PlayStations it sold during the month.

Software sales were also down, dropping 6 percent to $614 million, though analysts were expecting a slight increase. Microsoft blockbuster "Halo: Reach" sold 3.3 million units, but it wasn't enough to lift the category. Other top-selling games included "Madden NFL 11" from Electronic Arts Inc. and "Dead Rising 2" from Capcom USA.

Where's Sony's numbers? What are they hiding?

LordMarius3289d ago

why exactly do you care? Im sure that information is meant for their stockholders not you.

NYC_Gamer3289d ago

N4G stock-holders love the sales charts

ukilnme3289d ago

Everybody that comments on sales articles care to an extent. Some are not willing to admit it though.

EYEamNUMBER13289d ago

ding ding ding we have a winner come on down

JokesOnYou3289d ago (Edited 3289d ago )

Just stop the BS, its embarrassing how FAKE some of you are, of course we care about numbers, WHY pretend as if n4g is filled with your average joe gamer who's only interested in coming to n4g for the occasional game preview, review or hot rumor.

lol, NO thats most of the gamers we all know OUTSIDE n4g, but we are different, we are the 1% of gamers who WANT TO KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT THE GAMING INDUSTRY, and I feel no shame admitting I like to analyze everything about my hobby. I like to know what makes the industry tick, I like knowing the backstory behind the descisions devs make, and YES I like reading sales trends. I find it quite hilarious some are pretending they "don't care about sales" yet week after week, month after month here they are IN A, WAIT...WAIT...YEP YOU GUESSED IT A F**^ING SALES ARTICLE, not only reading but commenting too, quick ask me how you browse the web on wii= guess what I don't have a f**%ing clue, because I REALLY don't care, I've never even considered gaming online with the wii much less browsing the internet, but I heard you can, still if I really dont care about a particular aspect about gaming I just stay the hell away from it and talk about the stuff I do care about.

So again, numbers good or bad matter to those of us who crave every piece of gaming info we deem revelant, I'm sorry they hurt the fanboys feelings so they try to pretend they don't must be multi-tasking like a mofo, 'cause if you're in this thread you sure as hell ARE PLAYING SALES, but its OK denial is powerful drug. If you've waisted YOUR TIME and ours in more than 1 sales thread this month only to say something about you NOT caring about sales then you're so full of shiii I can smell you through my keyboard right now.

LordMarius3289d ago

2 things

1. My comment was aimed at big_silky because he is not known to be your typical gamer that just wants to analyze every piece of the gaming industry but more to just gather material for his trolling.

2. There is a reason why I submitted this article -_-

yea what are they hiding? i need to know because i own them? or something? i bet if sony sold one ps3 and one psp that would make my xbox or wii more awesome! big_silky, oh big_silky your parents need to start beating you

Lord_Doggington3289d ago

"Game hardware sales tumbled 19 percent to $383 million as fewer people bought Wii and PlayStation 3 consoles. Only the Xbox 360 sold more units during the month than it did the same time a year ago. Citing NPD figures, Microsoft said it sold 484,000 of the consoles, up 37 percent year-over-year."

gamingdroid3289d ago (Edited 3289d ago )

Well, whatever the numbers are they aren't positive for Sony or Nintendo so I doubt neither are going to report. I wonder if the two of them have anything to do with NPD stopping the console sales number.

Lord_Doggington3288d ago

I never thought of that. You're probably right. I'm sure investors are looking at the numbers and scratching their heads...

nice point

niceguywii603289d ago

I'm glad Nintendo maned up.

Homicide3289d ago (Edited 3289d ago )

Yeah, why are Sony hiding their numbers? I thought they were pleased with their numbers? My guess is that Move didn't move a lot of hardware.

Imperator3289d ago

Simple question, are you a stockholder? If not, then it shouldn't really matter to you. The games will be awesome regardless of sales so as a gamer, this shouldn't matter to you. Right?

Mahr3289d ago

"Where's Sony's numbers? What are they hiding?"

It sure is nice how not being given numbers has put a stop to all crazy console-war arguments, right, guys?

The NPD synopsis said that PS3 and PSP increased their average weekly sales compared to last month so PS3 sold at least 283k and PSP at least 100k. First time Wii has been in third place among home consoles this entire gen according to NPD.

StanLee3289d ago

No. The PS3 was in 3rd place for home consoles.

postofficebuddy3289d ago

“A couple other platforms, specifically the PS3 and the PSP are up on an average sales per week basis as compared to last month (August 2010). Interestingly, the average retail price of hardware increased notably this month, driven primarily by the Xbox 360 Halo:Reach bundle and the PS3 Move bundle."

PS3 sold 226k last month, a four week month. This is a 5 week month.

So PS3 sold at least 282,501. And the Move console bundle had a significant impact on the average price of HW sold so we're probably looking at over 300k.

StanLatMarveldotCom3289d ago (Edited 3289d ago )

Nintendo is reporting that they were the second best selling home console in September so that puts Sony behind Nintendo. All other analytical tracking had Sony in 3rd place including Webbush Morgan and EEDAR. Their numbers almost mirrors the NPD for all other platforms so why would it be differnt for the PS3? Besides, it's a moot point. Sony wont release their numbers and you knew with the NPD only reporting hardware sales to console makers, they would have been the ones to not release their figures to the public. If they had beaten the Wii, that would have at least been a significant PR win and they would have released the figures but they haven't.

postofficebuddy3289d ago

"In a note to investors, analyst firm Wedbush Morgan revealed that sales of Nintendo's Wii were down 45 per cent year-on-year with 254,000 units sold, while Sony shifted 312,000 PlayStation 3 units, down 37 per cent."

You need to be a member of the site but membership is free. And the number of weeks included in the data isn't based on the number of days in the month. If the first week has 3 days in August and 4 days in September then it's considered part of September.

skatezero2463289d ago

wrong ps3 sold 312,000 consoles for the month of Sept.

360 keeps rolling and ps3 even wont talk about it!

Bathyj3289d ago

Sales is all 360 HAS to talk about.

Sony prefers to talk about games.

I know what I'd rather listen to.

Bigpappy3289d ago

Wouldn't Sony it they had such good news and were beating up on M$? Great sales mean that customers like what you offer and are spending their money in approval. What can you think of that should be more important?

JasonPC360PS3Wii3289d ago (Edited 3289d ago )

Yeah Sony talks about games... you know the games they delay over and over?

Sony isn't talking about PS3 sales because investors may jump ship. Shops in the US may stop taking orders if no one is buying.

If Sony doesn't do somthing in the NA within the next year the PS3 may be dead in the water.

Hallmark Moment3289d ago

What games? You guys have not had anything since God Of War 3 and every year you guys boast the "year of the PS3" with the most exclusives and it is never true every year. Sony starts giving the true dates which end up being called a *delay* with huge parts of the hyped lineup for any given year always being pushed back yet they were never ready to begin with when hyped/announced.

Sony fluffs up their lineup with games barley on the drawing board that are almost a half a decade away while MSFT mostly announces games for that same year when they make the announcement.

cayal3289d ago

And aside from Halo Reach you haven't had anything since Gears of War 2. And now you have to wait longer for Gears 3.

commodore643289d ago (Edited 3289d ago )

LOL @ bathyj

So ... uh.. Sony prefers NOT to talk about sales?

But what's this?

It sounds very much like Sony LOVES to talk about sales when the news is good, but HATES talking about sales when the news is bad.

You know it's true, bathyj!

That was both cliche and desparate.

Bathyj3289d ago (Edited 3289d ago )

Seems like the people ranting the most about the GT delay have Xboxes only to me.

And you want to talk about gaps between titles?
I can count the games I've bought for Xbox in the last 3 years on one hand. Its getting so bad they had to make Fable a yearly update like Madden.

If you counted my PS3 games, you'd have to take your shoes off.
You guys take more pleasure in the downsides of PS3 than you do in the upside of Xbox. If it wasnt for PS3, most of you wouldnt post.

30 years of gaming and this gen is the first time I've ever been embarrassed by it.

jetlian3289d ago

fable yearly? try 2 years. what you count on your hand means nothing to the real world. I have over 105 xbox 360 games with atleast 2 more coming in a few weeks...cod:bo and fable 3. Naruto storm 2 may come

but i'm guessing ea:mma, vanquish, emslaved, james bond, dead rising2,AC-bro, and mayube moh will be added by years end

skatezero2463289d ago (Edited 3289d ago )

then why is there an article about Sony selling 312,000 consoles for the month of Sept?

N4G stock holders only care about sales, while recently no money earned nor gained lol.

Mustang300C20123289d ago

I believe now the 360 has sold more in the U.S. than the Wii as of these numbers. They are up by 100,000.
