Sony Sees `Strong' Europe Christmas Sales, Says PS3 May Beat Its Targets

Sony Corp., the maker of the PlayStation 3, sees “very, very strong” Christmas holiday sales for its video-game consoles in Europe, said Andrew House, head of Sony Computer Entertainment in the region.

The company expects to exceed its target of sales of 15 million PS3s in its fiscal year, aided by “strong demand” in Europe and North America, House said in a Bloomberg Television interview in Rome.

“Sales have been significantly up year-on-year in a market that has been overall slightly down,” he said.

Move has had “very significant sales in the first month since launch, somewhere in the region of 1.5 million units for the new controller across just Europe,” House said.

Thats impressive and very well deserved

Wildarmsjecht3699d ago

That is actually very good. We had "numbers" from VGcharts regarding US but nothing about Europe and Japan hasn't seen the Move launch yet either. That's around 2 million combining Europe and US. Nice job. More software is the key now that it's in the households tho.

LordMarius3699d ago

and the Coca-Cola campaign has yet to start

Wildarmsjecht3699d ago

I forgot about that campaign! To be perfectly honest, I was curious as to how many KB Move commercials we would see leading into the holidays.

It makes sense to have him out now in the first month or so of it's release. He's become a pr icon to say the least and people are familiar with him. However, you can't see his face every month with the same commercials either. Thanks for reminding me about the coca cola campaign they have in store.

The Coke Cola support as been CANNED! lol funny joke hey...

*Tumble Weed blows past*

Azerach3699d ago

The VGchartz numbers were worldwide (NA + EMEAA). So they were basically bullshitting as they were reporting 600k moves sold...

Armyntt3699d ago

The article had nothing to do with Kinect. Y flame? Do u wonder y u only have 1 bubble? Y cant both? N4G is so full of angry trolls its beyond ridiculous. M$ fanboys are just as bad too. Tell me y u guys wish failure upon a person or company. Grow up and dont be so full of pessimism.

SWORDF1SH3699d ago

4 disagree already from a joke. I better not give up the day job lol.

Anyway good to see the Move doing great. Proud owner of 2 and Nav controller next on the hit list.

cmrbe3699d ago

I for one certianly didn't. What also really surprise me though is how well it has been receive but mass/general media. Even in some Womans mags that i read which generally don't like hardcore gaming have pretty high opinions of move which generally is reserved for wii and ds games. What was also a big shock was their comments on moves accuracy which is something i would except from a hardcore gaming mag. Shocking really. Never saw it coming.

For a moment i thought move might actually fail as it was not really particularly focused completely on one particular segement so it might be a case of being good at everything but master of none. I guess Sony's gamble to appeal to everyone with move is paying off big time.

Sony will continue to cement move as a device for everyone which is good for them. Kinetic though will have a hard time convincing that hardcore segment to pick it up and i think that will stick forever, kinda like the xbox being known as the shooting console.

DaTruth3699d ago (Edited 3699d ago )

VGChartz fails again!!! Somebody needs to write an article/blog about VGFailure... I'd approve that!!!

And I bet people were just over-dramatizing when they said all PS3 sales reporting needs to be doubled when reported by VGChartz... it needs to be tripled!

metsgaming3699d ago

the last KB commercial had a bunch of coke in the fridge in the beginning so maybe that will start soon. So far sony has done more advertising for coke than coke has done for sony.

Remember Shipped isn't the same as Sold. Its likely a lot less than that.

sdtarm3699d ago

-_- then 360 sales would be by the floor

divideby03699d ago

and returned defective hardware is still considered a sale...ask any GS or BB manager

moegooner883699d ago (Edited 3699d ago )

VGchartz is a joke "Following a solid initial launch, it can be revealed that as of October 9th over 470,000 units of Move hardware have now been sold in the Americas and EMEAA. Another statistic of interest is that over 600,000 individual Move controllers have now been sold, 130,000 of which are serving as 2nd, 3rd or 4th controllers for the 470,000 unique Move customers. Around 42% of Move sales are coming from the Americas with the remainder from EMEAA"

cmrbe3699d ago

will always be crap. I laugh at people arguing over those figures pulled out some fanboys ass.

DaTruth3699d ago

And this is just 1.5 million across Europe alone, not including NA!

That's really and severely off!

"Bu, bu, but, do you have anything better!"

Lies aren't better than nothing! Debating VGChartz numbers is akin to debating whether the Easter bunny is better than Santa Clause!

PS3_lifer3699d ago (Edited 3699d ago )

Of course they will. With all the games coming out for it this and the next year. You'd have to be crazy not to get a PS3. I mean did you see Killzone 3 beta multiplayer video???

Anon19743699d ago

I've been looking at the sales trends and if they held steady the PS3 looked to end up with 16-17 million for the fiscal year, not the 15 million originally forecast. Now Sony's coming right out and saying their 15 million forecast might be a little light.

It's odd that Microsoft has, for the first time, not made 360 sales predictions. I know a few analysts have them selling around 10.5 million for the fiscal year. If this turns out to be true it looks like the PS3 could pull ahead of the 360 worldwide by the end of the holiday season.

SWORDF1SH3699d ago (Edited 3699d ago )

Move doing great. Strong Christmas ahead

Raoh3699d ago

those are impressive numbers.. i wonder what the u.s. numbers are like.

bustamove3699d ago

Yep, that's very good.

Just keep the games coming Sony!

raztad3699d ago

1.5m only EU??

Amazing numbers, totally not expecting such figures. Congrats to Sony and:

EA should patch MoH to support MOVE. I'd get it in a heartbeat.

I think it'll be a pretty strong Christmas for Sony too.

With the global economy still not going gang busters, I'd think people might buy things to would provide entertainment at home.

nickjkl3699d ago (Edited 3699d ago )

whats that about a global economy

you say people still have jobs and their spending their money on on video games and movies

and not cars and homes and making buisness

Nineball21123699d ago (Edited 3699d ago )

Well, I'm saying that people will try to spend their money on things that will provide them long term value and stuff the whole family could use. And home entertainment is cheaper than going out all the time...

But I see your point... All spending could be down this year from prior years.

DaTruth3699d ago

One night out for dinner costs more than a brand new game! That is why I like videogames; lots of bang for your buck.

That's how I got back into gaming. Use to spend ridiculous sums on hanging out smoking and drinking. One game every two months saved me a ton of money!

cochise3133699d ago (Edited 3699d ago )

sony has been on a roll for the past year. with the exclusives coming out, i don't see the ps3 slowing down anytime soon.

tatotiburon3699d ago

yes we already know the US sony division that are freaking out

Wildarmsjecht3699d ago

Yea?...i had no indication of such things. Can you link me to that? Or perhaps tell me where you can buy "pulledfrommyass" newspapers nowadays?

KratosGod33699d ago (Edited 3699d ago )

yes we know that... Japans M$ divicion is freaking out becuse 360 is in competition with the PS2 and not even close to the PS3 market.

jerethdagryphon3699d ago

ive paid 30£ for sports champions and have gotten 15 hours out of it so far.
and with a whole lot more to do 1£ an hour works for me

its good its fun and games if well made get a better bang for buxck

harrisk9543699d ago

"Move has had “very significant sales in the first month since launch, somewhere in the region of 1.5 million units for the new controller across just Europe,” House said. “The initial sales response has been so far in excess of our initial plan that we’ll probably be looking at accelerating production.”"

Well, so much for VGChartz and the 470,000 estimate on Move.

cayal3699d ago

I lol at the xbots who say it flopped.
