Netflix on PS3: Disc-free Next Week

If you instantly watch movies and TV shows from Netflix on your PS3, here is the news you’ve been waiting for: starting Monday, October 18 you’ll be able to instantly watch movies and TV shows without inserting an instant streaming disc into your console.
In addition to eliminating the disc, there is a new user interface that brings a much richer and faster browsing experience, content search directly on the device, and dramatic improvements in how fast playback starts.

It's about dang time. Now all they need to do is add more streaming content and make more of it HD.

deafwing3296d ago

i think I've ordered over 100 discs by now ... it was like automatic after a while, after used a netflix disc for 10 days i would just ask for another one ... damn discs were cheap as hell

Lifendz3296d ago

FINALLY! I know it's super lazy but having to take the disc out or find it was getting old. And the fact that you don't have to be a plus member is all the better.

inveni03296d ago

YAY! I can't WAIT for this. I hate snuggling up in bed to turn something on only to see that the Netflix disc isn't in. Then, I have to get out of bed, trek across the cold floor and put it in... It's just a waste of time. It will be nice to be able to leave my game discs in, too.

@deafwing I've been using Netflix streaming for like 8 months, and I use it constantly, and I've not had to reorder even one disc. They're BluRay discs. They're good quality. Most people don't treat them well though, since they're free.

GiggMan3296d ago

@Lifendz, with 3 kids my disc kept getting "misplaced" also. I have the app for the 360 but didn't want to jeopardize it to much (20 gig launch model still kicking).

Next week, Voltron and Fat Albert marathon.

you lazy dirt bucket :p lol

LoVeRSaMa3296d ago (Edited 3296d ago )

According to Engadget its the best Netflix steaming on the market!

Only does Netflix Streaming at 1080i

(Side note, I live in the UK Noooooo)

GodsHand3296d ago

Monday can not get here soon enough for me, I just hope with my plus membership it downloads this for me over night automatically.

I have some Canadian friends who have the disk less version already and they told me that you can pull up the XMB to check if friends are on, send and receive messages. I am looking forward to that part.

WildArmed3296d ago

Man, I love this new service!
Can't wait for subtitles and HD streaming :D

I keep my Netflix disc in the Wii and it works just fine.

What the PS3 really needs is for the OS to be modernized. The XMB could steal a page from Netflix.

divideby03296d ago

agreed... very disappointed with the selection of IV the first time I joined Netflix... every movie was old and crusty.. been out on DVD already...
and nothing like watching a series like Weeds, that IV only had 3 seasons back.. anything newer was only on DVD...
cable + DVR is what I prefer

Joule3296d ago

Finally, I love Netflix

Christopher3296d ago

I just downloaded the Netflix iPhone app. Talk about a huge slap in the face to Hulu+ and their attempt to make you pay for viewing less content on your iPHone/PS3/360.

This is a really cool development. My PS3 is the heart of my media set up. I might actually dump my cable service and just use this instead.

dkblackhawk503296d ago (Edited 3296d ago )

I don't need a disc for my PlayStation 3 in Canada...what the hell happend?
Edit: But I would love a new interface :D

EDIT AGAIN: I already have this...did Canada get it earlier or something?

blusoops3296d ago

Canada got it first. The funny thing is, I don't think netflix is even available in Canada on 360 either. Cool that the canadiens get some love

Anon19743296d ago

Yeah, it's not often we get something early. The Netflix app went live something like 3 weeks ago and it's the first time Netflix has been available outside the US. I think I've watched 7-8 movies on my free month preview so far. Amazed at the quality considering you only have to wait a couple of seconds before the stream starts. Now it just needs some newer content.

deafwing3296d ago

think there was some contract bs that kept this from happening

SwiderMan3296d ago

Or.... you could approve this one, which was first and includes important context like mentioning the words Xbox 360 (Apparently, on PS Blog, that system doesn't exist... also Car Drives You!).

Seriously, independent journalists who submit stuff first should get credit.

YourFlyness3296d ago

except its not official coming from a blogger. If you notice on the PS Blog, the news is coming from the Official VP of Product Development of Netflix, on the Official PS Blog, give Official news.

SwiderMan3296d ago

Yes, we should all get our news from Also, "bloggers," or journalists, get their news from the same source. They just translate what it means. PS Blog's "SOCOM FireTeam Bravo # Comes out Feb 2009! Yay!" was really "SOCOM FireTeam Bravo # Got Delayed" everywhere else.

YourFlyness3296d ago (Edited 3296d ago )

Ha! you are talking about a public sector that its meant to serve the people, vs a private company that can do whatever the hell it wants with it product.

ZombieAssassin3296d ago

Nice, now NetFlix needs to just allow a streaming only service so I don't have to use a credit card.
