BioWare Mythic Employee: "Old Republic will be one of the greatest failures in the history of MMOs"

Someone claiming to be a soon-to-be ex-employee of BioWare Mythic has posted a long rant about the company. In the blog post, "EA Louse" slams the management, talks about why Warhammer Online failed, and says that Star Wars: The Old Republic will be "one of the greatest failures in the history of MMOs from EA."

I'll still play it for the first few months no matter what.

Topshelfcheese3291d ago

Same, I have been fortunate enough to test out the closed beta, and I have enjoyed it.

Also people lose there jobs all the time(for all sorts of reasons), if you got the talent you will find another one. If he was so unhappy with Warhammer and such he has had around 2 years to find a different company to work for. Just sounds like a crying baby now.

HolyOrangeCows3291d ago

Some stiff competition from APB.

Anyway, I personally hope it crashes and burns and they go back to RPGs.

StanLee3291d ago

APB cost 100 million dollars. SWTOR costs 3 times as much. It's being reported it's costing 300 million to make.

Christopher3291d ago

This is the rant of a very bitter person. Extremely bitter.

***And Bioware? Don’t make me laugh. They’ve spent more money making the Old Republic than James Cameron spent on Avatar. Shit you not. More than $ 300 million! Can you believe that?***

Yes. It takes that much money to create any MMO that you desire to compete with WoW. Blizzard has already spent more than that on developing their next MMO, which they haven't even revealed as of yet. Why? Because Blizzard has to compete against themselves!

***And you know what they’re most proud of? This is the kicker. They are most proud of the sound. No seriously. Something like a 20Gig installation, and most of it is voiceover work. That’s the best they have.***

Same thing with EQ2. More than 75% of what you download from EQ2 is voice overs/sounds. This is nothing new. And they are most proud of the storytelling available via the voice overs. It's like getting Mark Hamill to voice over The Joker in DCUO, which is a huge deal to fans of the genre and something internally they clamor about almost every day.

***so most of Mythic has already been cannibalized to work in Austin on it because they can’t keep pushing back launch.***

This is also a standard practice in the development of all games. Programmers get moved to new projects when needed all the time. The last six months of an MMO are some of the biggest cram moments in content creation, graphic development, UI development, and general game development.

***So there it is. Rewarding the incompetent. Firing the competent.***

Nothing he's said makes me feel that he's more competent than the people he talks about. Every employee can create this sort of rant when they're angry. It's like arguing with a spouse, they always drudge up some item you once did as an excuse rather than looking at the here and now.

I'm sorry this guy is going to get laid off, but most of the stuff he brought up really is fueled by his own perceptions and anger and not actual facts. Sure, we all know there are some crappy managers out there, and Mythic has always been poorly managed since the very early days of Dark Age of Camelot. But, his comments really shouldn't be taken but with a grain of salt.

theEx1Le3291d ago (Edited 3291d ago )

Very, very well said. He seems to give the impression that he is angry at his own situation rather than doubting the games quality, as for Warhammer...
Oh and on the sound thing, why is it bad that a developer aims to have a full and diverse cast of voiceovers to make the game more immersive?

RememberThe3573291d ago

This is how businesses works a lot of the time. He/she didn't say anything that we haven't heard other companies do.

I'm sure this person is just pissed because they are getting laid off because of an other persons mistakes. When bad management decisions lead to worker lay offs, workers get pissed; they did their job but their getting fired anyway and the guy who f*cked up is still f*cking shit up.

Sounds like this person just got tired of all the save-facing over at BioWare Mythic and decided to air some dirty laundry.

Christopher3291d ago (Edited 3291d ago )

***I'm [inclined] to believe him/her.***

He already has been proven false in one of his statements: http://eatingbees.brokentoy...

Again, I don't doubt the mismanagement at Mythic, but I don't see how he can make any such claims on a game that he hasn't worked on at all and has only heard inner-office gossip about. Not that SWToR will break records or succeed where others haven't, it's just that this person isn't in the best frame of mind to make these sort of comments and is going based solely on his perception and not actual facts.

RememberThe3573291d ago

When your losing your job you don't care about the little things. It seems like this person wanted to air out some issues at BioWare, and from what your saying it was probably water cooler talk.

And the edits to that blog post were pretty funny.

Christopher3290d ago

***It seems like this person wanted to air out some issues at BioWare***

Actually, only two paragraphs were abut BioWare. His issues are completely with the former Mythic management team that is still in place and managing WAR. His comments about BioWare are just an aside of sorts.

Can't post it all here due to character limitation, read it here:

it's going to be just like aeon. everyone is all excited before release, the reviews will be decent, if not good. ppl will get it, then they'll think to themselves "why am i investing more time in leveling up characters in a game that really doesn't add anything new to the genre when i've already got 4 level 80s in wow?" then they'll switch back, just like with LoTR, just like with Conan, just like with Aeon, just like with Warhammer.

i can't even figure out why ppl still get excited about starwars. hasn't everyone figured out that the original fame of the series was a fluke and that george lucas is a no-talent ass clown who obviously stole the initial concepts; and that the new films are some of the worst mainstream movies ever created?

starwars is the franchise that brought us anakin skywalker, unfunny, witless dialogue with the repeated use of every physically painful cliche ever spoken (ex. "i have a bad feeling about this" "this can't be good" etc...), and jar jar binks!
EDIT: and the pod race!

Panthers3291d ago

The thing that makes this different than all those other games you mentioned is that it is a Star Wars game and its not a fantasy, but sci-fi game. Why play a different fantasy game when you already have WoW? But this is completely different. Plus I love Star Wars way more than the Warcraft universe. Yes I have 3 80s in WOW, but I plan on quitting when SWTOR comes out.

Spydiggity3291d ago

it has NOTHING to do with the setting. it has everything to do with the style of gameplay. it's the same game but with more voice acting...and that's the only thing it has going for it. and that it's starwars...but as i said previously...that really should no longer be a selling point. the franchise has been milked to death and lucas has ruined any quality that once existed.

ATi_Elite3291d ago

I very seriously doubt that.

Even if the game totally blows it won't bankrupt Bioware or Lucas Arts.
APB blew and now the company is in bankruptcy court and that my friend is the greatest failure of all time.

If SWTOR was in trouble then this source would have listed specifics like bad control, repetitive missions, lack of adventure or etc but this is basically crap journalism.

Scrupuless3291d ago

Wasnt the journalist who made the comments its was an employee and in fact at the end of the article the author advises us to take the employees words with a grain a salt as it cant be proved he is actually an employee> Sounds like responsible journalism to me. reports an interesting story and advises us it may not be true, wouldnt get tha1t from most journalist.

barefootgamer3291d ago

Oh yeah, I'm still going to try it no matter what some bitter, anonymous and possibly fake BioWare Mythic employee says. ;)

gamingdroid3291d ago

It should definitely be taken with a grain of salt, although I can't imagine why anyone would display what seems like inside information and at the same time such disgruntlement.

If I had to guess, I would say that is real!

athmaus3291d ago

Someone sounds bitter....i will still pay this game...looks great!

Panthers3291d ago

It does look great. Not sure why you have so many disagrees.

Bass_fisherman3291d ago (Edited 3291d ago )

it may be a failure but probably at least will be more enjoyable than FFXIV.
