IGN: Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes Review

Ultimately, there aren’t all that many good things to say about Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes. Sure, it’s better looking and slightly more entertaining to play than any of the similar games that have come out in recent years, but it’s still painfully formulaic and completely uninspired. This is a genre that desperately needs a makeover to be relevant again, becaus even newcomers to the game would be shocked to learn this was made in 2010, and not at the turn of the millennia. C’mon, Capcom, you’re better than this.

Presentation - 4.5
Graphics - 5.0
Sound - 5.0
Gameplay - 4.5
Lasting Appeal - 5.0

it's just like dynasty warriors so no surprise there. i might get it since it's only 40 bucks.

SasanovaS19874934d ago

i strongly suggest not to trust reviews with this game. im buying it day 1, which is today, along with 2 of my friends. play the demo,a nd ul be impressed. the combos only start there, but the full game will allow for 5000 hit combos, with insane amount of cool moves to pull off. game is a solid 8

Neckbear4934d ago

...Or has IGN been giving bad scores all over the place lately?

Can't wait to see the Black Ops 9/10 or 10/10 GOTY EDITOR'S CHOICE FOREVAR

Ah well. I fear I might not even bother reading this review thanks to the probability than it'll just be a rant over stupid parts of the game instead of objectivily mentioning the good and bad points of it.

Chaos Striker4934d ago (Edited 4934d ago )

You know, maybe if you actually read the review then you will understand why this game is mediocre rather than ramble and make a bunch of baseless assumptions?

@Stealth20k

I do agree that they scored Atelier Rorona incredibly low compared to everyone else. But, I do believe that people need to "read" reviews before randomly attacking a website. Again, it's only one person's opinion. In this case, they thought the design was bad. Other may think otherwise.

Stealth20k4934d ago

And is that why they gave atelier rorona a 5? When it has an average review of an 80?

despair4934d ago (Edited 4934d ago )

The atelier rorona review was a disaster and from the first paragraph of this review you can see that he made up his mind on the game. It set out to be what it is, there were no other expectations from the game it was made for those who like this type of gameplay. I for one would never play it more than a demo but many persons like these games and to find someone who, clearly from the very bare review, very much hates many Japanese games and this game type is doing an injustice to anyone reading the review.

Also the comment and quote on Japanese games being 5 years behind is offensive and hypocritical no matter how I look at it. I've played the same shooters for many years now and the same RPGs since elder scrolls early days all with a new coat of paint and sometimes a new gimmick. Action games and 3rd person shooters have evolved somewhat but even then they are what they are....most of the time.

These are not innovative games, they're just games that people enjoy so they continue to make them. There are also the ones that are new and different from both western and eastern developers. This game is the same, people enjoy it so they make them. And the fact that he says the gameplay is formulaic and uninspired might be true but so are so many games out now not just Japanese games.

Some IGN reviewers are good while this new set like this guy and especially Jack Devires(wrong spelling probably) who really should have stuck to reviewing pokemon and kids games are very bad at their jobs(with the new platforms they are reviewing never saw them much before).

Their reviews do not help me make a decision on what the game has to offer and whether I would be interested in it, they are just filled with snide and offensive remarks from gilted people who would rather be playing something else.

@Chaos Striker

And before you say anything I always read the review before ranting and a review is not an opinion(why do people keep saying that) its supposed to be informative and critical which this one was clearly not, the scores are opinions but the written review is not.

Neckbear4934d ago (Edited 4934d ago )

Alright, readed the review.

An one-page rant about how "dis gaem sux lol" with no explanation whatsoever about the core mechanics aside from "mash buttonz lol".

They could very much just write "dis gaem bad we dun liek it", put the same score, and at the end it would still be the same review.

See? This is why I didn't wanted to read the review. I feel like I wasted two minutes reading it.

Although the game COULD be like that, I feel like, as despair said, they should've explained a little more the game, or just be more in-depth instead of this...weak attempt of a review.

It's like reading those bad Metacritic user reviews. It feels like any guy in a forum could do a better job, god.

Chaos Striker4934d ago (Edited 4934d ago )

Well, your description pretty much indicated that you read the review. I don't attack people that explain details like yourself :P.

Regarding your viewpoint of reviews, I will cite an example.

A portion of the game that involves stealth requires certain movements by the player.

1 reviewer believes the section is clumsy and the controls are too loose.
1 reviewer believes the section adds suspense and the controls imitate 'real-life' movements.

Each reviewer has a different viewpoint of the section. Hence, I view reviews as opinions.

@Neckbear

Dunno if you have enough time to edit, but this is my response. If you can beat the game with just pressing "Square" to attack the enemies, then the reviewer's description is accurate--button masher. AND, judging by my experience with playing Dynasty Warriors 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and the iterations in between (which is similar to Sengoku Basara), it is entirely possible. This is how I view it and why I believe the score is somewhat justified.

ExcelKnight4934d ago (Edited 4934d ago )

@Chaos Striker: I would love to see you beat Dynasty Warriors VI or Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 2 by exclusively mashing Square on a difficulty that ISN'T Easy. Chances are you'd get smacked down by the first AI boss you'd come across, since most of them require heavy hits (triangle) to open up their blocking.

So no, the games aren't button mashers. They're Beat-'em-ups, but definitely not button mashers.

As for the review, spending an entire opening paragraph to comment on Keiji Inafune's remarks and ending it by agreeing with him is basically all the reviewer needed to do in order to show bias against the game's very genre and even its developer.

Chaos Striker4934d ago (Edited 4934d ago )

Like I said, it is "possible". I have seen people play like that and win on Hard difficulty. The game has not been able to get past that issue since all the previous iterations. Additionally, the continuously flowing attack of DW6 basically encourages you to mash square all the time. I also find that the heavy attack was not as effective as it used to be in earlier iterations like DW4. Also, fyi, I always play on Hard mode.

ALFAxD_CENTAURO4934d ago (Edited 4934d ago )

You have a point, because the review of IGN about Atelier is mediocre.

Stealth20k4934d ago (Edited 4934d ago )

Go on gamerankings the 5 they gave atelier is the lowest score and the only one under a 7.5 basically......

They gave disgaea 3 a 6.5 and its one of the greatest srpgs on consoles ever.

They have a big bias now towards these very japanese games they cant see straight,.

And fyi inafune basically has said he wants to quit aand retire so hes shitting on the industry. Whther its true or not

despair4934d ago

@Stealth20k

not only the score was low but the review(another 1 page rush job like this one) was full of talks about underage girls and a lot of unnecessary comments and implications while saying things like "the battle system was the usual nothing much new" like that's supposed to help me at all.

Aleusia4933d ago

@stealth20k

at least he's come out with it and nobody will take him seriously or listen to his ideas anymore.

Chaos Striker4934d ago (Edited 4934d ago )

Wrong place...

TANUKI4934d ago (Edited 4934d ago )

Don't care what IGN says (for this particular review), getting this game no matter what.

versusALL4934d ago

You really have no standards when it comes to video games, someone get this guy Uncharted 2 stat, RIGHT NOW!

Reborn4934d ago (Edited 4934d ago )

Its his choice what he purchases. What a gamer plays, is up to them. (If country hasn't banned it) Reviews are just information on a range of aspects within the game. Some, just read too much into them. (Sometimes)

TANUKI4934d ago (Edited 4934d ago )

Yes, I have "no standards" because I like ONE game that you don't like. You don't even know me, let alone the game collection I have, so your failed attempt to call me out, is quite pathetic.

And secondly, I HAVE UNCHARTED 2 and I already think it's the best game ever... so I don't get why you even brought that up.

Edit: Thanks Reborn. I appreciate you not calling so much attention to what I posted, unlike that jerk.

ALFAxD_CENTAURO4934d ago

IGN don't decide at all what games you will play.

Not everyone have the same preferences and tastes.

Pumbli4934d ago

VersusALL - Some people have different tastes then you do in video games.

Shocking, I know.

versusALL4934d ago

WOW, I was just kidding, you guys are taking my comment WAYYY too seriously, I DO know that people have different views and I can't help that.

Aleusia4933d ago (Edited 4933d ago )

nevermind

I just got this game and its actually good

Homicide4934d ago (Edited 4934d ago )

I played the demo, and I thought it was awful. The enemies (excluding the bosses) don't even hit you. I stood still for 10 seconds, and nobody attacked me. Combat was boring too. Just button smash your way.

radphil4934d ago (Edited 4934d ago )

What demo were you playing? If you sat still on Mitsunari's stage, Honda decks you in about 6....

scar204934d ago

Mite as well give cod a 4.5 its the same stuff every year shoot,camp,run,and noobtube,repeat.

Trophies are always iffy for me. I'd rather gain unlockable weapons and modes from completing a game if I had to choose but very rare that a modern game offers both.

Eidolon2872d ago

I like trophies, it's kind of a public list of games you've beat the crap out of, I've made a few friends online based on trophies. The reason why trophies and gamerscore are fun is because it's a number that keeps growing, and the trophies set a goal to increase it, it's a game in itself. I wouldn't want no new weapon for beating a Dark Souls game, thank you, give me the plat or at least the trophies for beating all the bosses.

Eidolon2872d ago (Edited 2872d ago )

Doom has you pretty much following a guide your entire playthrough for the plat, because there's so many easily missable collectibles that it would take 100+ hours if you wing it versus 20-25 w/ guide but it's a great experience. Some games have you grind for it, have you replay a game several times with only minute differences, I don't call that replay value.

WiiHome: Sengoku Basara: Samurai Heroes Review

WiiHome: "Play this game for an hour or two and we can guarantee that you'll be desperately seeking something with just a little more depth. There really is nothing to do but hack and slash your way through scores of enemies, and even that killing process isn't exactly refined!"
