Eurogamer Expo 2010: Is Sony’s 3D Broken?

SG: At last week’s Eurogamer Expo, I had the opportunity to play three of Sony’s 3D games. I played Killzone 3, Motorstorm Apocalypse and Gran Turismo 5 in 3D. All of them appeared to have a fundamental problem that, for me at least, totally breaks the immersion Sony are trying to sell us.

And you have to wear those uber cool $130 glasses.. and buy that $3000 TV.

jaosobno3297d ago (Edited 3297d ago )

Only 720p?

And how many 1080p games are out there?

raztad3297d ago

I actually would be very, very pleased if every 3D game is 720p. So far only MS:A is reported to run at that resolution when 3D mode is enabled, so it wouldnt be far fetched to expect a 1080p 2D game (1080p=2x720p).

Of course what I'm saying only applies to games where two different frames are produced and no z-buffer tricks like in CoD.

So you don't have the money to afford a PS3 and 3DTV, a shame, the only thing you can do is trolling.

OtherWhiteMeat3297d ago (Edited 3297d ago )

$3000 TV..... Where the hell do you shop??

handheldwars3297d ago

$3000 only??? Check this out!

A 3D TV should be big, at least 50 inches, so that seems appropriate. And since I'm a SONY FANBOY I'm only gonna buy SONY products and live life SONY STYLE and keep buying their COST FREE products ... LMAO!!!!

Boody-Bandit3297d ago (Edited 3297d ago )

3D is amazing for gaming whether it's 480p or 2160p.
It adds depth and immersion like nothing else I have ever tried before while gaming.

BTW "some" 3D displays are under $1000.
A good LED cost roughly the same as one with 3D.
The only additional cost is if you need more than a couple pairs of glasses since most packages offer a pair of them with the 3D displays.

lexington3297d ago

oh man that was great!!! and true too. you're my new hero darkcharizard!! pshdwii in 3d wow!! Let's boogie!!!!

milohighclub3297d ago

First of all out of the people he asked "100%" said they noticed it!!! bollox, so every one of them tilted their heads for no apparent reason. 2nd i have a 3dtv and play my ps3 in 3d, theres no loss of image unless you turn your head to a 90 degree angle, which hurts and you will not be doing during a game i guarantee, if you are then you need to get some better games(or a life)!!!

DaTruth3297d ago

Your eyes are broken! The rest of us will enjoy!

I highly disagree with the impression the article gives out. First he blames the "programming" for making the image look like it has layers...that's what stereoscopic 3d is suppose to look like, it adds depth but it's still 2d (it has NOTHING to do with programming, perhaps the perspectives set could be optimized to give a better 3d effect, that's all though). Second, he blames losing the effect, when one tilts their head. That is down to the TV not the PS3.

my brother got a 3D tv the other day so i took my ps3 round to see how a few of the games look, i have stardustHD (great game) and honestly the depth is amazing and it freaks me out when the comets come from "behind you"

DelbertGrady3298d ago (Edited 3298d ago )

They are not saying it isn't. Try reading the article. They found that there's an annoying issue with angles and layers using Sonys 3D whereas Nvidias tech was working better.

But yeah, perhaps it would be better of them to not mention it at all and pretend like it's the best ever. Is that what you want?

Venatus-Deus3298d ago

@ Soda

It is a terrible article and to be honest I expected a better comment from you.

He asks the question of whether Sony’s 3D is broken and then writes an article described both hardware and software problems, but also makes a point that these are problems the competition doesn’t suffer from.

The writer first starts by pin pointing specific software problems. Incredibly these same software problems are present in all of Sony’s 3D games at the Expo. What are the chances of different development teams all managing that?

Then he describes a hardware problem that occurs when the viewer mores their head by 10 degrees or more. He supports this view with the statistic that 100% of the 30 people he spoke to about it agreed. These people where other SC staff and bloggers, yet this is the first time in 6 months of the technology being available that anybody has written about it.

I’ve experience this tech first hand on a number of occasions and it’s better that Avatar in the cinema. Granted I’ve only played games, but what this guy talks about doesn’t exist. Head movement is not a problem for the active shutter tech or maybe the rest of the world has missed something.

It’s a flame bait article written purely for hits.

Maybe you should try reading the article again.

xino3298d ago

then I guess you fail!

Now I know why most developers were saying things about 3D tv for gaming will fail, because graphics will be downgraded, doesn't run smooth etc.

Even recently Nintendo said you would see better details if you play 3DS in 2D than 3D.

So I guess by playing games in 3D, you wouldn't see so much in-depth details but the joy you get is 3D effect.

3D is not ready for this generation, it's for next gen!

I tried those games the article listed and I wasn't impressed by them! Avatar 3D game had better 3D effect than those 3 games.

shoddy3297d ago

can't wait till next year to get one for games and movies.

xino3297d ago

I suppose 3D too and do not believe it's a fad.

2012 3d tv will be ready just like HD TV

jneul3297d ago
