You can be forgiven if you’ve assumed that the Lord of the Rings ship had sailed and we were all pretty much over that particular cultural touchstone. Though the adventures of Frodo, Aragorn, and the rest were a major part of the cultural zeitgeist at the dawn of the new millennium, most folks have moved on and now get their fantasy fix from Harry Potter or, heaven help us, Twilight. And so while it may seem strange for a new Lord of the Rings game to come out, Aragorn’s Quest actually has amazing timing, reminding us all about the books and films we loved so much while creating an engaging way to get younger fans interested in the franchise. While this title won’t be up for any Game of the Year awards, it’s still a solid title that will appeal to families, young children and the young at heart.
Which is the one true game to rule them all? Here are 10 of the best games based on Lord of the Rings and Tolkien's worlds.
Chalgyr's Game Room writes:
I am not a big fan of the Lord of the Rings trilogy but it is a classic source of inspiration for fantasy stories. Aragorn’s Quest is based on Tolkien’s work and lets you guide the aforementioned hero as he battles the minions of Sauron. Your purpose is to reach the Black Gate of Mordor so that Frodo throws the magical ring of the evil wizard into the lava of Mount Doom and destroys it once and for all.
Nintendo Life - As a hack-'n-slash game based on the famous movie franchise, Lord of the Rings: Aragorn's Quest enters a field that is already well-plowed by earlier releases. But with it's unusual twist on storytelling, is there something here worthwhile to nudge burned-out fans to march on Mount Doom one more time?
Glad to see a Wii title get some love.
I thought this had a chance to be good. Glad to see that it didn't disappoint.
I wish I still used the Wii.
