GameZebo - Ecco Jr. Review

GameZebo - Scientific fact: the only thing cuter than a dolphin is a baby dolphin. So Ecco Jr., a prequel to the classic Sega Genesis game Ecco the Dolphin, definitely scores some points when it comes to sheer adorable charm. But it’s more than just the game’s star that takes a step backwards, it’s the actual gameplay as well. Ecco Jr. is much easier than its infamously difficult predecessor, so much so that it often feels as if there’s no real challenge. It’s also very short, clocking in at around an hour.

Why we need a new Ecco the Dolphin game

SEGAbits: "This will actually be a short one because all things considered, I haven’t spent a ton of time with this series. I remember my first experience with Ecco was on the Sega Genesis with Ecco: The Tides of Time, which was actually the 2nd game in the series. As a little kid I struggled to get a grasp of how the game worked, and after many tries, I was finally able to progress through several levels, but was never able to finish it. I would love a new Ecco game, I spent many hours trying to win!

But these days it could turn out pear shaped, going on current trends. I'd imagine it would be first person, with guns... attached to the dolphins fins, with perks. And TANKS! LOTS OF TANKS! TANKS AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE!!!!

IGN - Ecco Jr. Review(5.5)

This kinder, gentler edition of Ecco the Dolphin's adventures is certainly more accessible in the early going. It's easier to get into compared to its predecessors, which might have been too challenging and intimidated players in the past. But beyond the initial ease of adjustment to the design, Ecco Jr. proves to offer little more – its lack of any sense of danger or urgency keeps it from being as engaging as the first Ecco game, or The Tides of Time, and it would be very hard to justify spending 800 Wii Points on this title over those two superior games.
