SystemLink: "Go on. Guess. Yeah, you got it. Official Playstation Magazine UK, in their 50th Issue, asked Playstation users to vote on their favourite Playstation game in it's 15 year history. The results? Predictable."
. I thought it was Gran Turismo... "Uncharted 2 took first place, which is pretty unsurprising. A personal classic, and we think best in the series, Metal Gear Solid came second, with Final Fantasy VII 3rd and GTA: Vice City 4th. Metal Gear Solid 3 and 4 took 6th and 5th place respectively." Well, congrats to Naughty Dog then.
UC2 was really great but I was surprised because the game I always want to be #1 on these list never come out on top, this time it did . :)
I've been gaming since 1984. Uncharted 2 is the best game I've ever played because I judge games based on the time period they're released. Different tech allows for different delivery. In other words, there's a different "Greatest Game of NES", "Greatest Game of PS1", "Greatest Game of PS2", etc. But when it comes to the life of PS, of course the game with the best tech, best delivery and most action-packed gameplay wins. And that's U2.
Metal Gear Solid 1 or Shadow of the Colossus Why? Because MGS1 was revolutionary. Uncharted 2 is only evolutionary from what MGS1 did. All great games this generation are building off the great foundations that MGS1 had back during PS1 era. But I say SotC is a contender for number 1 simply because it broke the mold and took the concepts of journeying and epic battles to a WHOLE 'NOTHER LEVEL!
I think FF7 should be first, MGS second, and UC2 third. ICO fourth, SoTC fifth. FF7 had more depth, more story, and it was way ahead of it's time. That game changed my life and my view on video games.
it goes to show how many new gamers there are nowaday . most gamers nowaday have no idea wat games were good last gen , most of them just jump on the hype band of halo 3 , CoD or wii . even tho this helped the industry's economy a lot , the gamer community is deeply inpacted by these pre-puberty 12 years old gamers that just kept talking non stop on xbl/psn with their high pitch voice that would make justin beiber jealous .
Well said. Anybody that thinks a game like Uncharted 2 or a Halo game is better than a game like Shadow of the Colossus or Okami are probably just a bunch of young add-addled 13 year olds. Those kinds of games can be good, but at their core, they're shooters. Shadow of the Colossus is a piece of art.
1. GTA San Andreas 2. Metal Gear Solid 3. Final Fantasy VII 4. Uncharted 2 5. Grand Turismo A-Spec Yes Uncharted 2 really is that good but not 17.33 million Playstation 2 copies sold good. San Andreas has yet to be rivaled.
uncharted 2 is really great i finally got my copy of uncharted 2 today and been playing for the past 5 hours straight last time i did that was with uncharted 1.
Honestly, I don't think it is. My personal number 1 game in Playstation history is SOCOM 2. I played that game for 6 years and still would if it wasn't for the cheaters. I've played and enjoyed that game longer than any game I've ever played on any platform.
i got UC2 and Demon's Souls around the same time... i spent 20 times more time on DS but UC2 is still a great ass kicking game!
IMO the biggest game of playstation HISTORY is possibly either MGS, SoTC and Gran Turismo 3 (all 3, since PS brand is NEVER about 1 game) however, Uncharted 2, Demons Souls' and Little Big Planet have definitely made an impact, but I can't, as a old playstation consumer, consider any of those part of HISTORY yet to me those games are part of the present. maybe when this article comes out in the next console generation, then I might agree.
Great games are only on the PS3!
Nope. Not surprised Uncharted 2 got the nod there. It's a great game.
in this issue they say that qore will have a look at gt5 on oct 5th im looking foward to that .
Nice. I'm looking forward to that episode.
Uncharted 2 deserves it.
luncharted 2 is not best mgs4 is
I R not surprised. -___-
wow Uncharted 2 is really ridiculously overrated, in 15 Years of Playstation history the game wouldn't even make my top 25. Horribly disrespecting the classics like Final Fantasy VII and Metal Gear Solid
what about final fantasy 7 final fantasy 8 metal gear snake 3 god of war gran turismo not only is uncharted overrated but its one of the most original games in existence
"not only is uncharted overrated but its one of the most original games in existence " LOL, you tell em boy - really twist that knife in Also Metal Gear Snake 3 ???
lund day shakal walaya shur daya yadaya hoya dalay mgs4 is best nut bundcharted 2
Lol at bundcharted lmfaoooo
No Shit Sherlock! Let's wait 'til the next gen and make this list again. I bet SOTC will be there again :P (Not that I like it too much, but community seems to)
Uncharted 2 is great no doubt. But God of War II was better.
No it wasn't. God of War II isn't even as good as God of War.
hmm Naww. All of the games were good, but out of all 4 II was the longest, had the most boss fights, most types of enemies, most unlockables, had new game +, had the most varied and inspired environments, and it was the one in the series that really took Greek mythology and made it into it's own. It just had a more epic feel. It was also ranked second on IGN as the greatest PS2 games of all time.
I didn't know IGN's word opinion was all that matters. GOWII was a fantastic game but it just wasn't as good as the first one in my opinion. I would put them in this order: God of War III God of war: Chains of Olympus God of War God of War II
i liked gow3 better than 2
I'll wait and see what the list is like but if Shadows of the Colossus or Kingdom Hearts aren't on this list then I am going to be a bit disappointed in the PS3 demographic lol.
SOC was one of the best games ever! KH also amazing in terms of game play and story. My personal favorite will always be Barbie's Beach Adventure, but for some reason noone seems to agree w/ me? ps that was a joke about the Barbie game i just made it up prolly isn't even a real game.
that section of Barbie's Beach Adventure where you got to drink drive in a beach buggy with a grenade launcher was amazing plus the whole twist at the end was mind boggling. SOC is one of the greatest games of all time but, if I'm being honest, BBA is not far off.
I'm not really sure if this is only for the UK? If this is world wide it is suprising to me a bit.
UC2 deserves it, its my favorite game on PS3 and one of my favs of all time for any system. i never had as much fun in this game then i did with any other game on PS3
Uncharted 2 is a magnificent game and I absolutely enjoyed every second of it. But there is no way it should be "best" Playstation game. But it is all subjective so nothing to gripe about. :/
Your Recency effect theory may be true but you can also say the same for "clasics". fans usually remeber things more fondly after time.
Exactly. Try going back and playing some of the classic games you love. Most of them will let you down now. The fact is you always remember things better than they actually are because of your "Recency Effect" when playing them back then.
if Uncharted 2 is the best game thats ever been on a Playstation, the last 15 years mustve been pretty rubbish. there are many PS games better than Uncharted 2, and dozens of PS2 games that are better. the problem is that most of the PS3 fanboys werent old enough to have played them. to really appreciate the original PS games, youd have to be at least 25 years old NOW, and the majority of fanboys are only about 13-18. meaning the PS2 was their first console, and they probably only got that a few years ago. its like asking an 18 year old who the best president of the united states was, when they really only know of the last 2 - its pointless.
I'm a first time PS owner this gen (and am 25 in fact, almost 26) and believe at least some voters fall into that category. Having a launch PS3, I'm loving eating up games I never got to play before but...this said...I believe the voters suffer from typical short term memory. People like what's new, better, and best. People just have a short term thinking capacity and/or, at least in my boat, never got the pleasure to play earlier PS games. PS has a long, long history and unfortunately many people missed out on that or lack the capacity to fully recollect it all (hell, I remember going over to my bud's house to play the orig Tomb Raider when young). If this same exercise were done for Xbox, it'd not be as difficult or controversial due to its relativity short history compared to PS. For me, I could give an answer to this immediately - KOTOR.
I'm 18 and I have a collection of PlayStation 1 games. I grew up poor so I always played games a generation old. I played PC when all the kids at school had PlayStation 1s. When PS2 was hot I played PS1 games. When Xbox 360 came out I bought a PS2. Now I'm old enough to buy my own game console. I bought a PS3. Uncharted 2 is the best written game I've ever played. Fun is debatable, but Naughty Dog did a great job in executing the narrative.
it doesn't matter how old someone is, they can still get hold of the old systems and all the top games. I'm only 17 and I have PS1,PS2,SNES,Dreamcast, gamecube. I know those are not THAT old but still, if i wanted to buy other consoles I easily could, along with the games. Your last sentence makes no sense at all, I'm sure there are plenty of people who are younger than you who know more about history than you ever will, age has nothing to do with it.
@claterz: "it doesn't matter how old someone is, they can still get hold of the old systems and all the top games." sure, they CAN - but the very very very large majority of them NEVER do. and with the idiotic nature of the 'gamers' these days, theyd pass on a classic game like say Goldeneye purely because its not 720p with MLAA and 60 player online. theyd rubbish Syphon Filter because its got pixely graphics and doesnt have Uncharted 2s cutscenes. theyd rubbish Resident Evil 2 because its got pre-rendered 2D graphics for the levels. theyd rubbish Tony Hawks Pro Skater because you cant create your own levels and do 100+ combos. basically, they wouldnt give them a chance because theyre not on the same level from what they want in a game today. they think that because Uncharted 2 has high quality cutscenes that every 3rd person shooter has to have the same style. they think that every FPS has to have Killzone graphics and online multiplayer. the only reason most people that actually play PS/PS2 and earlier games these days is because they grew up playing them and know how good they are, despite being vastly graphically and technically inferior to what is out now. give a random kid the choice between playing Haze on the PS3 (which is rubbish) and the original Medal of Honor on the Playstation (which is a classic) and theyll choose Haze 99% of the time purely based on the graphics and that its on PS3. thats why i cant agree with people saying Uncharted 2 is the best game ever on a Playstation. basically the only people who could realistically think that are people that have only been playing games since late PS2/early PS3, and these people shouldnt be getting a say in whats the best game for a line of consoles that dates back to when they were still just a glint in their dads eye.
Uncharted 2 got lots of awards for a reason you know:-D But still in my mind I love RPG's more and FF8 is still my favourite ps game, so each to their own, hopefully after that info that nomura leaked on ffvs, it looks to point towards FF returning back to being a masterpiece - airships, world maps, massive exploration, massive interaction and beautiful story and scenes
Demon's Souls. I loved Uncharted 2 but actually liked 1 more (though 2 looks better, I just liked 1 more). My experience with PS games is limited as I never owned a PS until 3 so my opinion equals dick but I do have a launch PS3 and have caught up with some great titles and must say, out of them all, it is Demon's Souls for me. Something about that game, just ... a certain "je ne sais quoi" you could say. You get your ass kicked and then by the 3rd playthrough you are a badass but not yet a god, come playthrough 5 (pending how much you farm), you kick some serious ass. But unlike so many RPGs, the level cap is almost impossible to reach. I have 400 or so levels left to get and that alone provides incentive to keep on playing and playing and .... playing.... And then, who can deny the allure of the MP. I'm a non-online gamer, I prefer playing alone, but damn, I love Souls' MP. Truly a unique and creative experience in every facet.
totally agree with you, demon's souls deserve a mention there. I'm sorry to say this, but a lot of hardcore gamers don't buy magazine since they usually leak on internet before their official release in stores and the internet is always faster than mags. I had an atari at 2 year old and my first NES at 3 year old, so I played a freaking lots of games and I can tell you that uncharted 2 was extremely awesome, but I don't think it deseves the title of best game in playstation history. crappy games like wii fit sells a lot and it's not the best game of nintendo ever! sales numbers isn't absolute. My pick would be between these titles : Final Fantasy VII, FF IX, Castlevania SOTN,grand turismo 2, twisted metal 2. but most of those games come from the ps 1 era, so that proves I'm more old school gamer than many others here on N4G. Best game is something you pick yourself and can't be chosen by votes in a magazine.
Have you ever played GTA SAN Andreas? If not then you my friend have had a rough childhood. I've played on every console ever made and yeh I got a lot of flack but Uncharted 2 isn't the greatest PS title ever. 1. GTA San Andreas 2. Metal Gear Solid 3. Final Fantasy VII 4. Uncharted 2 5. Grand Turismo A-Spec
yeah, GTA SA would be a better candidate than uncharted 2 in my opinion! but most playstation fans won't say this, since the game is multipaltform, so saying that GTA SA is the best game is like saying Xbox got the greatest game too..... Not that I care since I got a 360 and ps3. and if others are putting a disagree on this comment, it would just confirm what I just said
Yea I have - I don't like GTA games honestly, only open world game like that that I have ever truly enjoyed is InFamous oddly. When I was young (I'm about 26 now) I was a Ninty dude. That's why I never owned a prior PS. My personal cash went to ... well, let's call it "extracurricular activities" -- hobbies of the illegal sort you could say. I forgot Twisted Metals like Zero mentioned above. Those games had me at my friends houses DAILY. Twisted Metal 2 was sick as hell and I could play that for HOURS. The Final Fantasies for me never tickled my fancy unfortunately. My fave games are RPGs but I just can't do turn-based. SOTN was the shit but my only experience with that came when I DL'd it from 360 arcade when released. After playing it, I actually for whatever reason had fonder memories of the vania's on the old ninty systems. Well, out of bubbs. Adios. Edit: If I had to choose an MGS, and I picked up the collection soon after getting my PS3, I liked 3 the best. That'd be in discussion for me too. I'd put the following into discussion: Souls', Twisted Metals (thx Zero), MGS3, 4, 1 in that order, and then maybe the orig Tomb Raider simply b/c of the nostalgia that game brings me. Man I once thought the graphics on that were the beez-neez.
I actually started a new character in Demon's Souls because my level 100-something guy was getting too easy for me. Ever since I got the Northern Regalia, I more or less laugh at anyone who invades my game. SLASH-SLASH-DEAD. And armor-wise, he's a freaking tank. I *missed* getting my ass kicked! I'm playing through with more of a light-and-quick build now with daggers and what not. It's FAR harder to play this way...very reliant on backstabs... But anyways, I agree. Uncharted 2 is great, but Demon's Souls is transcendent.
not surprised.. but my all time best ps title has to be ratchet deadlocked.. god knows how many years i spent online.
I started loving games in the 5th generation and for me, the best games of every generation have been Playstation games, excluding Ocarina of Time and Goldeneye. I mean Silent Hill 2, MGS1, MGS3, GTA3, San Andreas, Vice City, Tekken 1-5, Resi 1-3, FFVII, VIII, X, DMC1 & 3, Beyond Good & Evil, ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, Okami, Crash Bandicoot, Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, Gran Turismo, Vagrant Story etc. But go back and play those games now, really open-minded, without remembering how much fun they were at the time, without enjoying the dramatic irony of knowing the tragedy that lay before the protagonists, without having to ignore certain aspects of the game. As much as critics don't like to admit it, games have progressively gotten better and better over the years. Developers have noticed certain traditions about gaming simply don't need to be there for people to have fun and have consequently improved the industry as a whole. Though it wasn't as impressive as FFVII, Silent Hill 2 or MGS3 were at the time, I agree that Uncharted 2 is the best PS game of all time, simply because it's the best game of this generation, and this generation is an improvement over the last.
You're the first one to mention Okami. My 3rd favourite game ever, after MGS3 and SotC.
"simply because it's the best game of this generation, and this generation is an improvement over the last." That's like saying your 1st child (if you had children) is better than the 2nd born child Crap statement.
Best game playing it today? Yeah probably. Definitely not the best game for its time. UC2 is great but FFVII, MGS, and GTA3 were so much more revolutionary for their times.
UC2 is a great game.however Xenogears,FFVII,8,9,tactics,MA G are far better to me.Well to be honest Warhawk(PS3) is my favorite PS game of all time(at least for now).Just so much fun playing with friends.
Honestly I would give It to Demon's Souls ,.. It is the best game I have ever played PERIOD,.. I know it is subjective and so,.. There are a lot of truly remarkable games on PS platforms,.. PS3 is just crazy machine,. just this gen we got U2, LBP, MGS4, GOW3,Heavy Rain, Demon's Souls, R2,.. Ratchets,.. hope they uprez Okami ,.. and definitely getting Ico and Shadow collection,..
Thought it would be gran turismo if we are talking about the playstation brand in general(PS1 PS2), even though Gran Turismo has not really made an impact on the ps3 yet(but im sure it will), it was pretty damn huge on the other two consoles. The word "huge" being an understatement.
I am sorry Uncharted 2 is one of the best games this gen, but not as good as the classics! The only game that I think should top that list is Final Fantasy 7 or Gran Turismo both of these titles did more for playstation than any other games.
There is nothing above FFVII it's obvious that the ppl who vote didn't play games in 1997 because they were infants that period or very small to play console games... Anyway I own UC2 I have finish it and I love it but not more than FFVII the voting target new generation of gamers so for me is not legal if they have a way to control what age is the ppl who vote only then I would believe in this voting and don't forget that FFVII have sell over 11 millions copies and it's the No1 in sales on PSN also how many copies UC2 have sell? as much as I know not even half of FFVII..
I bought FF7 day 1 when it released. It's a GOOD game, not my favourite game though.
I was an adult in 1997. FFVII was good, but it's not the best. There were a lot of games back then that were fun, but the tech just didn't allow for the type of delivery Uncharted 2 has. In 15 years, we'll be doing this all over again, saying, "Uncharted 2 was the best 3rd person adventure game in PS history!" Technology changes and so delivery changes. I've been playing Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed lately. It's a great game. For it's time, top notch. But it doesn't compare to a game like GT5 because the tech has allowed for better delivery.
I see we have a bunch of relatively young PS gamers here (and over there on that website). How could anyone forget: -Jumping Flash 1&2 (I want a JF 3 in HD on the PS3!!!) -Motor Toon GP 1&2 -Loaded -Driver 1&2 -Doom (yeah I know, a PC game originally, but the PS version was better, with its revamped soundtrack)& Final Doom -Destruction Derby 1&2 -Philosoma -Popolocrois -Warhawk (&PS3 version) -Return Fire (originally a 3DO game, but who remembers that system anyway?) -Klonoa Door to Phantomile -Soul Edge -Oddworld 1&2 -Dino Crisis 1&2 -Vib Ribbon -Parappa the rapper -Justice High School 1&2 (originally arcade games, but still) -Lomax -Syphon Filter 1&2&3 -Suikoden 1&2 -Vagrant Story -Battle Arena Toshinden 1(ok, it has aged quite a bit, but for the themes alone :D) -Fantavision -Soul Calibur III -Dark Cloud 1&2 -Klonoa 2 -Tekken 5 (with all its extra stuff: Tekken 1,2,3, etc) and many, many, many more. But where on earth, where the freakin HELL is LittleBigPlanet? LBP (and its sequel) are, to me, the true revelation of this generation of consoles! That said, Uncharted 2 among thieves is one of the best game ever made in the whole history of videogames, right up there with Super Mario Bros., Tetris, Zelda OOT, GTA San Andreas, etc. So it deserves to be ranked number 1 I guess. Damn, it's so difficult to choose, with all the incredible games we've been treated to in 15 years of Playstation history.
OH! totally forgot about vagrant story!! that's one title that My parents bought me for chrismas when I was younger and I was so surprise by the quality of this game. My parents were always taking advice from my older cousin to be sure what games were good. I had other popular titles like FFVI on the snes, twisted metal 2 psx, parasite eve 1 psx, but vagrant story was one of those titles that all of my friends didn't know this game since it wasn't popular compared to other RPG titles like FF, but DAMN it was a hidden gem in all those psx RPGs. make me want to pop that game in my psone again right now....:D
Whoa, I really like on Uncharted 2, might even say love.. But it wouldn't even touch my 25 best Playstation games of the last 15 years.
How could UC2 top MGS4? Nothing has come close to what MGS4 did in sales ( 1.4 mill day one alone ). Even when the PS3 was still $499 and $599 when it did it. Unless UC2 has passed 6 million units sold. It would not have sold more making MGS4 still the highest exclusive to date. Both games are the best of their kind. Both are Game of the years. Both have many scores in the 100's. But MGS4 showed the world what the PS3 could do and with that. The PS3 sells went up 4003% when MGS4 came out and again when the console was $500 and $600. Something to think about I guess. As far as history of the console. Strongest epic fail ever. Nothing will touch MGS. More so Uncharted as it's a "new" series in comparison.
Who ever disagreed, F.O. As you are clueless.
