3DS Announcement is 'Worst Case Scenario,' says Analyst

For a while, many in the industry thought the 3DS would launch this holiday season (at least in Japan). As it turns out, that was Nintendo's intended plan, but Nintendo President Satoru Iwata "said the company had wanted the 3DS to be ready by year-end, but later decided it wouldn't be able to supply enough units if it launched this year."

This is not a great sign for hardware allocations in the U.S. and Europe come March. "Given the later launch of the 3DS in Japan, we note that shipment quantities to the U.S. next spring might be more constrained than originally anticipated," said Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian.
