Castlevania: Lords of Shadows Exclusive Hands-on

Today, the PlayStation Plus subscribers received an exclusive demo for the next game in the Castlevania franchise, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. Luckily, we have it and we will cover it for you. The demo will arrive for non-Plus PSN members and for the other platforms next week, on 29th of September. The game is produced by Mercury Stream in association with Kojima Productions. Kojima made some of the biggest games on the console market, the last one being Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for the PlayStation 3, so the expectations are very high for this reboot of the Castlevania series.

bad preview.....I find it a little disturbing that someone who is previewing this game has NEVER played any of the previous castlevania games.

How can you properly preview it without knowing how to compare it to previous games in the series?

Not trying to be a snob, but what kind of TRUE, self-respecting gamer and journalist has never played a castlevania game?

Castlevania is like gaming 101....SOTN is like the foundation for what the great exploration games have been modeled after....

Dude, go download SOTN, and maybe play a couple of the DS Castlevania games before you write any more articles.....or, at least play shadow complex to get an idea what "metroidvania" means.

First of all it's a blog. It's totally different than gaming journalists out there like at IGN or Gamespot.

Second of all you are disrespecting new people who get into gaming. I have neither played previous Castlevania games but I'm very pumped for this one, but should I not be able to compare and express my opinion of this game then when I get it??

GuruStarr784980d ago (Edited 4980d ago )

You say you are going to compare this game "when you get it" But, how are you going to "compare" it to anything Castlevania, if you, yourself have never played them?

I'm not saying your not allowed to express your opinion, or be pumped for this game, but if your readers are world-wide and you desire to have any credibility with the gaming community, you should have at least have an idea of what the previous iterations of the series entail....if every noob with an internet connection and a computer posted their "preview" of a game that may or may not be canon in a series of games, we'd be inundated with worthless previews....

What I'm really trying to say is; is that there are just too many people writing stories on here just to get their site "hits"...If I'm going to read a preview or an impression, I would hope the person writing it has some sort of idea of what to compare it to besides (in this case) a "god of war clone".....I'm sick of hearing that. This is castlevania, and while it may play like god of war in the controls department; what I want to know is; does it play like "Castlevania" is supposed to play? or have that "metroidvania" feel?

I'm not disrespecting anyone....I'm merely stating that people who write blogs and want to have them on a site as big as N4G, should at least do a little bit of research, instead of writing "this game plays like castlevania, it wuz gud, and I really lyke it"....Thanks, but anyone can tell me that...

xYLeinen4980d ago (Edited 4980d ago )

You still don't get it.

It's a blog. Blogs are everywhere and you should take their credibility for what it is. It really sounds like you should stick with sites like IGN and Gamespot which got high credibility (apparently in your eyes) because N4G get all kinds of articles from everywhere. You should take the article for what the article is, and get over it.

@XLlien:

Your arguments hold no weight.....at what point did I say anything about "gamespot or Ign" having credibility?

I'm stating my opinion, the place for those are in the comments section........the comments section is not for trolls to imply or accuse people of "ign or gs have credibility" Which in my opinion have less credibility since they make money off gaming advertisements and tilt their reviews to reflect that and then fire their reviewers for giving bad scores to game companies that line their pocket......

if the game feels like God of War that is a good thing a very good thing. i consider God of War the best hack n slash ever made. and yes I have played just about every hack n slash for i have been gaming since the Atari, Coleco,etc.. days. I'm a real gamer an old school gamer, but anyhow i believe Castlevania LoS will be a freaking awesome game. The way a next generation castlevania should have been from the beginning.

Although being linear, which I wish it wasn't, the first game was absolutely incredible. A mix of old school God of War meets Date's Inferno; I was highly impressed by this title. I heard the sequel was trash so I ever played it but I think LoS was a good example of how a 3D CV game could be.

rgraf771313d ago (Edited 1313d ago )

I was very happy the game was Linear as I hate exploring. The first game was one of my all time favorites and the 2nd game was a total letdown with the lame hub system and stealth sections. Playing in current times sucked too. I wish they would make a remaster of part 1.

magdiellima1313d ago

Good as a game but terrible as a Castlevania. The sequence was even worse.

Terry_B1313d ago

It is a great game, but just like DMC is not a Devil May Cry..this one was not a Castlevania :-)

Give Castlevania to Igarashi team, and they will nail it as they did with Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness.

Terrifyingly Bad: A Look Back At the 3D Castlevania Games

If you decide to play a Castlevania game, make sure it's in 2D. Unfortunately, the series has never been able to make the jump from 2D to 3D successfully. Publisher Konami has tried. Six times in fact, but whether trying to build it in-house or with a third party developer, they never captured the essence of the series or make a good game for that matter. So just to be sure you know what to look out for, here are the six 3D Castlevania games that have been made.

I loved the hell out of lords of shadow, lords if shadow 2 had its moments but just didnt leave as much of an impact on me as the first did, still loved it though. They are both great games IMO, maybe not the best "Castlevania" games but great games in their own right.

RememberThe3571669d ago

Yeah that first game was legit good. Really wish they hadn't taken a step back for the second, this series really looked great in 3D.

AK911669d ago (Edited 1669d ago )

According to one of the former devs of Mercury Steam the higher ups kept interfering with the sequel to the point where the game was nothing like what the dev team had envisioned for the sequel so we got the mess that was Lords of Shadows 2.

PhoenixUp1670d ago

I enjoyed Lament of Innocence and Lords of Shadow. They were entertaining titles and I wouldn’t mind trying Lords of Shadow 2 on PS Now.

Just because a game isn’t GOTY worthy does not mean it’s not worth playing. You could do a lot worse than those exceptional titles.

Abcdefeg1669d ago

Curse of darkness was ahead of its time

Hedstrom1669d ago

I really liked lament of innocence and Lords of shadow! Havent tried the other 3d games. But ive played most of the 2d games!

gangsta_red1669d ago (Edited 1669d ago )

I don't know why Castlevania: Lament of Innocence gets a bad rap. It was one of the best in the series at that time and really was a compliment to the Devil May Cry 3rd person style of action that was getting popular at that time.

I rented it on a fluke and was seriously surprised on how good it was. So much so I went out and bought a used copy of Curse of Darkness and instantly returned that trash.

The problem with Nintendo 64 games is they all tried to mimic the Mario/Zelda 64 style of gameplay and how could they not with that whacky ass N64 controller. Almost every game outside of Nintendo's own felt horrible and incomplete.
