Open Pstore Project Announced for PS3

"A team over at demon-hades.org has announced they will be working on a project called Open PStore. Apparently this will be similar to a Wii app known as the Homebrew Browser. Users will be able to download and install (legal) homebrew applications directly into their PS3. Basically it is a homebrew PSN Store. The team also states if your PS3 is incapable of going online, they will have a version for you to access on your PC. With this option you would need to download the homebrew apps manually and install them via usb stick. They currently have a rough PC version located at http://madga.quijost.com/ The members working on the project are The_Marioga, AdriHades, DanteHades and PSmaniaco."

Just like you can't legally run unsigned code on PS3, I'm pretty sure selling or distributing it is just as illegal considering the PSN EULA (if you buy a PS3 today with older FW, don't sign the EULA - don't open a PSN account - I think it's technically legal as you never agreed to that).

You know what is funny? They could have done that for PS3 Linux if they wanted to, but before Jailbreak no one was giving PS3 homebrew any attention. I simply don't get what this guys want... They ruin it for everyone (OtherOS removal), them they ruin (or attempt to ruin) it for developers (Jailbreak - it was efficiently blocked) now they want to show people how good they are delivering their shit? WTF

Those guys could of had gone online just normally and still use this without having piracy related stuff in anyway if this was done for YellowDogLinux or any other PPC OS (even a homebrew made one would work) and GeoHot wasn't supported or incited by HB scene.

If your programming a decent/good looking game then ask Sony or any other company to publish it for you other than that (emulators, copyrighted codecs,... etc) considers illegal since it's using the jailbreak.

I don't support game piracy at all. However homebrew apps are something completely different. I'd love to install apps that can add new features to my console. Like a better music player. If this 'hack' can allow the community to create cool apps then I'll support it. Unfortunately there are a bunch of ppl out there who wan't to use this opportunity to pirate games which I think is pathetic. I mean why would you wan't to pirate a blu ray game honestly. It's too much of a hassle you're better off buying the game and supporting the devs. If piracy on the ps3 becomes such a big problem then devs won't develop for the ps3 anymore!

There are a lot of talented freelance programmers out there with the capability of improving, by LEGAL means, a product, doing things the original manufacturer is either too lazy or uninterested in doing. As you've mentioned, a better music player (with custom visualization). Custom dynamic themes. .mkv support, a feature very frequently requested. Also, homebrew programs such as digital comic book viewer, improved web browsers, e-book viewer, .pdf viewers, freeware programs, return Linux support...you get the idea. However, as Spiderman says, "With great power comes great responsibility," where you'll find people exploiting a GREAT TOOL for illegal means, such as piracy.

Of course, with this said, I don't know why hacking couldn't just stay on open source platforms like a PC. Perhaps hackers are bored with their already conquered domain and just seek a new challenge?

Of course everything isn't all black and white but it's a question of whether the good outweighs the bad on the mass level.

How is homebrew piracy? I was under the impression homebrew was made available freely and the only thing it had in common with pirated games was the need for a hacked system to play them.

In the end using this jailbreak device and trying to connect to PSN would be a chore. Plus Sony is going to release a new mandatory update every 2+ weeks now because of this. So its just going to be a cat and mouse adventure between the hackers and sony. The hackers will release a new updated hack then sony counters it with a mandatory firmware update. Its just going to go on and on. As many people have stated before. I have a feeling Sony is going to sneak in some firmware updates in there new games. It would make sense and would throw the hackers off guard.

wouldnt it be incredibly funny if using this, people were able to fix most of the OS problems that Sony havent?

ie.
- pressing the PS button when theres a notification on screen takes you directly to that message/trophy
- cross game chat
- more streamlined in-game XMB (removing all the options that you cant actually access in-game)

Cydia and the like just made iPhones what they SHOULD have been to begin with. hopefully this will do the same for the PS3.

having said that, unless it becomes as easy to 'jailbreak' the PS3 as it is to jailbreak an iphone using jailbreakme.com, i wont do it. and if i ever did, there is NO way in hell i would be using it to backup games that i DONT own. being a software developer myself, im pretty against it as you can imagine.
