How Dreamcast changed the video game world

SEGAbits writes: "On September 9th, 1999 SEGA let loose its white dream machine upon the United States. This new console was called the Dreamcast and was advertised as a highly advance console. It even carried the slogan “It’s thinking”.

It has been 11 years since the day it hit store shelves in North America and we now see how it effected the games industry."

It`s great system I still own one. VMU was/is awesome.

SilverSlug3422d ago

sadly the DC was the only one to have a device like that for its memory cards. Not that we use memory cards now.

Redempteur3421d ago

the DC had a good way of using memory card ..the card was more than that i could farm objects/items in skies of arcadia while doing a math test !!! at school !!...

The revolution that was ...

Army_of_Darkness3421d ago (Edited 3421d ago )

And I don't know if its just me, but every game I played on the DC seemed like it was running at a solid smooth 60fps?
Damn, I wish I didn't leave my collection of dc games in the shed:(... bad idea...

Theonik3421d ago

Haha! Pity the batteries on that thing didn't last long >.>

GWAVE3421d ago

The SEGA Dreamcast was awesome, and I still own and love mine.

However, the Dreamcast's #1 contribution to the gaming world was a tragedy, but it proved a point:

It doesn't matter how big a name you have. Once you start milking the same old franchises (Sonic) without introducing new exclusives, your console will die.

I wonder if anyone else in the industry is following that trend...

SilverSlug3421d ago

You need to check up your history. Sonic was not around much on the Saturn. Did not have his own real game. When the DC rolled, Sonic Adventure was a huge deal, Adventure 2 was well received.

They did ONE party game with Sonic at the time. That is not much milking.

They also launched PSO (online was new for it), Shenmue, Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, 18 Wheeler, Virtua Tennis, Seaman, Samba De Amigo, Space Channel 5.

They did a ton of new IPs.

Awookie3421d ago

What are you talking about? Thats not at all why Dreamcast died

Redempteur3421d ago (Edited 3421d ago )

actually i managed quite a long time with them 2,3 months by set of batteries .. i didn't game with sound on after all

How many sonic game was there on dreamcast ? not that much Also there was no milking on dreamcast every franchise got 2 games at most ... (sonic , phantasy star online , jet set radio, snk vs capcom and the list goes on )

bjornbear3421d ago (Edited 3421d ago )

first console to really use online that worked properly (yes before the Xbox children)

still remember those Phantasy Online days *nostalgia*

and of course possibly one of the most iconic/best games of all time

Yep! I own two of them. My wife got me a new one off of eBay a few years ago and it's been slickness ever since. Sonic Adventures 1&2, Power Stones 1&2, Street Fighter 3, Skies of Arcadia; there's a lot of gaming goodness to be had on the system. A great addition to my SD gaming station here. :)

tinybigman3421d ago (Edited 3421d ago )

i went from SNES to PS1 so i never got the chance to own a DC myself. my brother happened to own one though so i did get to try out some of the games he bought, but most of them were sports games lol.

Skies of Arcadia i got to play on the gamecube

Agent Smith3422d ago

Tres213421d ago

u kno i was just lookin at that game hopin it gets ported over doubtful but still...the anime was cold & so is the manga

pippoppow3421d ago (Edited 3421d ago )

I have the game and will play it after Nier.

Just finished reading the manga after watching the anime. Great anime and even greater manga. After the ending to the aniome I had to know what happened after. looked on line read a few pages and just had to support the amazing work of Kentaro Miura.

I wish the PS2 Berserk game would've gotten translated but I'll have to get a modded PS2 and buy the import with fan translations online, one of these days.

Redempteur3421d ago

berserk PS2 is awesome make me want another berserk gameon current gen consoles , it's even easier to make the kind of bloody battles now ..
another good thing with the psé game is that you really feel the weight of gutts sword

thief3421d ago

They sure had the best lineup of launch and first-party games, that was an amazing burst of creativity from Sega. Too bad the console went under as Sega as a developer has gone downhill since.
