Ali Hillis Interview (FF13's Lightning, Mass Effect's Liara) [RPG Site]

Ali Hillis is a bit of an up-and-coming name in the world of video game voice acting. She hadn't been a voice actress for games at all until taking on the role of Liara T'Soni in Bioware's Mass Effect, and then in 2010 she's had two massive roles - returning as Liara in Mass Effect 2, but even bigger playing leading lady Lightning in Final Fantasy XIII.

To celebrate the launch of Final Fantasy XIII and Liara's return to Shepard's squad in the new Mass Effect 2 downloadable content "Lair of the Shadow Broker", RPG Site spent a couple of hours chatting to Ali about her acting career, her charity work, how you too can get into voice acting, and what it's like to be two of gaming's biggest leading ladies this generation.

She's absolutely lovely and polite and such. :)

I had no idea she also voices Karin.

Not a big fan of dubs though. I read the manga and watch subs.

I avoid that dub shit at any possible moment.

hate it because it has american voice not because it has bad voice acting if it does

Great interview. I loved the job she did as Lightning and she seems to have a very real enthusiasm for voice acting.

Lady's clearly got a lot of diversity. Never realised these characters were voiced by the same person.

Well if I got a chance to hit that, I'd make her use the Lightning voice (shifty eyes).

coolfool3417d ago (Edited 3417d ago )

I love her honesty. There is no pretending that she loves games more than the reality just because she thinks that's what the reader wants to hear. If it's for the paycheck then she says so (but in the nicest possible way).

Edit: Since when was FFXIII-2 official?

"FFXIII-2 was recording while I was recording, so no. There are so many people that are going to be disappointed and I feel terrible about that. I’m sure it will be great, but no, Lightning’s not in it, none of the same characters are in it."

Have I missed this?

AP3417d ago

Pretty much. It's rare you get such honesty.

stephmhishot3417d ago

She's probably thinking of Versus.

Arksine3417d ago (Edited 3417d ago )

...she is talking about Versus.

Edit: Beat me to it stephmhishot.

coolfool3417d ago (Edited 3417d ago )

I thought that. In that case no one will be disappointed that she's not returning because she never would have done in Vs. The expectation was made very clear from the beginning that it was a different time/planet/whatever in the same universe.

Also it's interesting to hear that the English voice recording for Vs has been done at the same time as FFXIII even thought the games release dates are going to be far apart.
