Most Over-Hyped Games

Expectation is the mother of disappointment, and that's especially true when it comes to video games. By making grandiose promises that, for one reason or another, simply couldn’t be met, the hype machine has wrecked more than a few games over the years. Here are some of the worst offenders.

Number 1 should be Halo.

"Number 1 should be Halo"

Look at the numbers playing multiplayer 3 years after launch, I know its cool to bash xbox games around here but there is a difference between ass licking and talking shit

Look at all the agrees xD

Sitdown5143d ago

I honestly did not really know anything about the game...and just happened to pick it up by luck of the draw because the gamestop bundle made me pick three games with the purchase of an xbox....so I got that, dead or alive 3 (I believe it was the third one), and project gotham racing. It was not until Halo 2 that hyped started building because of the success of the original.

specialguest5143d ago (Edited 5143d ago )

I also knew nothing about Halo until it blew up in popularity after its release.

to these stupid ass articles because all they do is cause nothing but trouble. if i buy a game is because i was interesting in it and wanted to play it. not because of hype or whatever people want to believe.

i don't like halo but i am interesting in Reach because it seems a lot more interesting to me then the other 4 games in the series. and hype isn't the deciding factor for me wanting to play this one.

jack_burt0n5143d ago

This would be top on worthless N4G articles giggedy giggedy waste of cyberspace and clicks :P

thereapersson5143d ago

Pretty much.

The amount of duplicates, mirror articles and cut & paste journalism that gets posted around here is truly sickening...

opoikl5143d ago

Is it that time of the week again??

JeffGUNZ5143d ago

The difference with halo is that it actually delivers. Sure, graphically it is not a masterpiece, but the competitive multiplayer and the fun factor is outstanding.

I do agree with Too Human, man I was disappointed when I got my hands on that.

frostypants5143d ago

No Battlecruiser 3000AD?

That game was legendary in its fail.

Hey I totally agree with Killzone, I never liked the first game and I couldn't belive the hype it created. However the sequel I did like. ^_^

Close_Second5143d ago

...billing Killzone as the Halo beater. To be honest it was not as good as Halo but there was no reason it could not have been. Was certainly not as polished as Halo.

Halo had a great story, best of the series thus far (not played Reach) but I have to say, Killzone 2 provides the most visceral experience of both franchises. Honestly, playing K2 you can almost taste the dust and black smoke in your mouth. Its still the best looking FPS game I have played on a console.

thereapersson5143d ago

SONY never billed Killzone 2 as ANYTHING remotely "Halo Killing". It was the media, fanboys and other associated individuals that hyped the first game up higher than it should have been.

Honestly though, the tech and level design was ahead of its time. It was, in fact, more than the PS2 could even handle. Guerrilla Games really had a vision, and the fact that it took another console generation to really push it to its true potential is case-in-point.

mcstorm5143d ago

Killzone 2 did look amazing but I still dont think the game play matched up to Halo's game paly.

I Got Killzone the day it came out and finished it played it online for a few weeks but it just felt like it was still missing things.

Killzone 3 looks like it may play better than KZ2 and if so will have longer legs than KZ2.

I think MW2 should be on this list yes it has sold Millions but it just did not do it for me I think BC2 was the better game and alot more fun online too.

RememberThe3575143d ago

Of course it didn't, it was never meant to. Killzone and Halo have completely different goals when it comes to gameplay.

-Alpha5143d ago (Edited 5143d ago )

Killzone was definitely hyped as a Halo killer by fanboys and it was such a stupid hype train. The game is fun, but I did think it lacked many features and had lots of issues. The basic lack of a party mode for such a class based/team based game was unforgivable

I agree. The hype following KZ1 was horrible. I did enjoy KZ1. But yeah.....
KZ2 redeemed things.

kasasensei5143d ago (Edited 5143d ago )

The first killzone is full of bugs. That is probably one of the reason it never reached the king. Or it was the lack of colors? :p

kasasensei5143d ago

A lot of people dont like KZ2 maybe?

RememberThe3575143d ago (Edited 5143d ago )

A lot of people liked Killzone 1?

I know I did. I loved that game.

Kurt Russell5143d ago (Edited 5143d ago )

According to player base - statistically you are speaking verbal diarrhea. People will agree with you... but you're clearly waaaaaay fucking off the mark when you step into reality.

If halo was over hyped... you wouldn't need a halo killer would you?

kasasensei5143d ago

"According to player base - statistically you are speaking verbal diarrhea."
omg, i love the way you talk. XD
bubble for you, well said.

cyberwaffles5143d ago

blah blah blah. i guess mcdonald's cheeseburgers are better than red robin's right?

thank you for those who understand the analogy.

Kurt Russell5143d ago

Doesn't change a thing cyberwaffles... not even your n4g e-peen, but keep trying.

Halo is popular for a reason... and it isn't happy meal implementation, it's because it is an extremely solid online shooter with a great deal of features to most console based ones... A lot more than your "Red Robin" has.

-Alpha5143d ago (Edited 5143d ago )

@cyber

That analogy just goes to show the elitism and intolerance of people around here. It's amazing: one guy says Halo is overrated and he gets a ton of agrees. That's cool, nothing wrong with that. But then when someone says the same thing about K2, despite the fact that it had tremendous hype, everyone acts as if he is objectively incorrect. Ur analogy is terrible. McDonalds burgers are quantity over quality. Quality suffers because of mass production. Halo isn't made with ingredients. It's made once and copied onto a disc millions of times and sold.

Just because a game has sold so much doesn't make it like a McDonald's burger. Are you saying that if it sold a lot less it would be any better?

Megaman42xX5143d ago (Edited 5143d ago )

People love to love Pac-Man. I think most of the time that I go to play in an arcade it winds up being Mrs. Pac-Man rather than Pac-Man. Huge difference, one is the same level over and over and the other has a few different levels.

Close_Second5143d ago

...Pac-Man CE on Xbox Live (hope it comes to PSN) and then Pac-Mania on the Commodore Amiga. Of course the original is still a blast from time to time.

il-mouzer5143d ago

good list, and no Halo won't be on that list, the first one at least it was a great FPS unlike Halo 3 and the later iterations of course
