G4 Review: Mafia II

Audacious in its design and story choices, Mafia II shows new possibilities in the medium and merits interest by anyone wanting an adult change of pace.

Psychotica5392d ago

Finally a half decent review, makes me wonder who to believe

madmanden5392d ago

I think it sums it up really well. If you want an adult story in a very polished game with a few flaws then mafia 2 is for you :D

East_Coast5392d ago (Edited 5392d ago )

Polished turd. PS3 version is garbage. Don't support lazy devs who think it's perfectly expectable to sell this kind of shit.

jambabie695392d ago (Edited 5392d ago )

lol im from the east coast as well. anyways i get what you are saying, and i agree, but don't think that having that point of view is a little harsh?

i played the demo of this on the 360 and the ps3 and really it was fine. i do think that the same over all experience should be the same on consoles, but their has been plenty of multiplats that don't "exactly" equal up on the ps3 version but we're still enjoyable.

i just got red dead last week, i got it for the ps3, and so far im loving it. sure it may not be as good looking as the xbox version, but it still looks and plays just fine, granted i did dl the patch first that allowed me to use l1 to aim and r1 to shoot.

some wonder why i got the ps3 version over the 360 version i guess...well i wanted the trophies more than the achievement points. sounds stupid and it is, but really that's what it came down too.

don't let little things like grass and shit like that keep you from enjoying a game that you prolly would've enjoyed have you not seen the "comparisons" a while back. with this being said i will get this after i complete red dead, and i will prolly get the ps3 version of it.

i use "real triggers" and they're ok, but i'd still like r1 and l1 to be used better in the ps3 version, but i can deal with r2 to shoot and what not. who knows they may patch this later on like rockstar did with red dead.

i guess really all im saying is maybe don't buy it new, or rent it since you feel the way you do- and like i said i agree. it is shitty that games cost 60 bucks, and one version is "prettier" than the other version, but looks like this is the way it will be for the rest of this gen anyways.

when it comes to mafia 2 i found the 360 version to look slightly better over all, but i thought the ps3 version performed a little smoother. i will see what lens of truth and other sites say, but i am 95% sure i will get mafia 2 for the ps3, plus it will have extra content.

peace

the-show-stopper5392d ago

u didnt happen to know that the ps3 version gets exclusive missions do you?
cause for me those extra missions would have been more important then trophies or achievements but to each there own

SilentNegotiator5392d ago

"Stop-and-pop combat grows tiresome"

This is what amazes me; Reviews these days can say positive things about everything BUT the combat/gameplay and AI, and STILL give a higher score.

"TIRESOME" combat and "limited" level design and enemy A.I., and it still gets 4/5? Mind-blowing.

jambabie695392d ago

i put this in my older post ". i will see what lens of truth and other sites say, but i am 95% sure i will get mafia 2 for the ps3, plus it will have extra content. " so if u are talkign about mafia 2 yea i knew, if you mean red dead no i didnt/dont know.

sorry, but you kinda have thrown me off some with your reply.

I think Gamespot is the most reliable resource for game reviews I'll wait for their review

boodybandit5392d ago (Edited 5392d ago )

your own.

I read reviews for the content and pay no attention to their scores. They have zero effect on whether or not I will play a game.

bobcostus5392d ago

LOL Gamespot? Are you aware that they FIRED someone because they were too harsh on a game in a review? (Kane and Lynch)

Gamespot is a joke. Reviews as a whole are a joke. Your opinion is what should matter in the end.

Hm, the cons seem like things that plague all free roaming games.

"Some character rendering poorly done, pulls you out of the experience"

And that's the 360 version can you imagine the PS3? ha

Bioshock still looks fantastic, one of my all time favorites.

Yui_Suzumiya852d ago

Beyond: Two Souls on PS3 can compete with modern day graphics.

SonyStyled852d ago (Edited 852d ago )

Same as Killzone 2 and 3, uncharted 2 and 3, Infamous 2, Heavy Rain, Resistance 3

jasonismoney852d ago

I wish this was entirely true, but you might want to load up Killzone 2 and Resistance 3 again.

SonyStyled852d ago

@jason I watched some gameplay videos of KZ2 and R3 on my full screen. They are on par or succeed graphically to the first person shooters mentioned in the article that also launched on the seventh generation of consoles. Try the same and see what you think

cthulhucultist851d ago

Killzone 3 was super impressive! I could not believe the graphics back then as I was regularly pausing the game to stand in awe looking at the surroundings! Resistance however did not impress me that much. Heavy rain is also another amazing graphically speaking game. It almost felt next gen

Fist4achin852d ago

I always thought the first 3 Gears of War games looked great and still hold up for today.

SonyStyled852d ago

They did for their day. I recently played gears judgement with on the 360 and the draw distance was so blurry. The characters up close look great though

JEECE852d ago

Far Cry 2 was awesome. In addition to having demonstrably better physics and AI than later games in the series, it had a lot of design decisions that, criticized at the time, have since been praised in games like BOTW and Dark Souls.

iNcRiMiNaTi852d ago

It might not be super amazing by today's standard but I thought Mgs3 looked really good

JEECE852d ago

In terms of art style it still holds up.
