Tom Marcks: Ultra Ping Review

Tom:

"You may have seen Ultra Ping on the app store, sitting in the corner, minding its own business. You may have thought it was just another Pong game. You may have passed on adding it to your collection of iPod/iPhone games. But I'm telling you, if you did...if you failed to give Ultra Ping a chance...you made a terrible, terrible mistake."

What matters is that i have a crappy internet connection and the online works flawless for me. Which is odd because when i had the 360 i had a ton of problems with XBOXlive. I really dont know why because so many people state that XBOXlive is better than PSN because you pay for it.

Darkfocus4799d ago

depends on where you live I guess. I don't own a 360 but when my friend brought one over it downloaded stuff a lot faster than my ps3...I must be far from the PSN servers...

I am actually surprised that games require such small amounts of information.

PSN/XBL both use P2P for most games.

Gaming will be near identical outside of development bugs (Black ops was pretty rough on PS3/PC out of the gates)

Yeah, I have a Sprint Overdrive I'm testing out. I've played Gears of War and Halo Reach using it. Reach uses a lot of data initially because it sends all the map data and player data in one lump. In Gears I've played for a few hours and only used about 10mb at the most.

@Darkfocus

You just have a more shitty internet connection than your friend

I download from PSN @2MB(megabyte not megabit) per second. This is the maximum that my crappy ISP allows

a year ago the max. was 0.5 meg/sec but this was before I upgraded from ADSL to VDSL2

maxcer4799d ago

i have done tests with multiplat demos on psn/xbl. every time the download will finish much faster over Live. not to mention the installation adds to the wait.

Darkfocus4799d ago

he brought it over to my house though.....

Paying is completely irrelevent, because it comes down to a few different things, traffic at the time, speed of line, latency and distance from the servers.

Really, all things being equal, a download from PSN and Live and connection to PSN and Live should give the same results, but I have also found issues on both services because things aren't equal. The major difference is that at a certain point, when the connection to Live is routing to Microsoft's data centre, your connection will be through a private stream, rather than the standard connection. This doesn't mean a damn though if your connection to the public line is crap.

The best you can do is ensure your internet set up is as good as it can be, hardwire to your router, make sure your ISP has your line set up on interleave if fast path is causing errors and, generally, just keep high bandwidth programs like torrents switched off while gaming to improve connection. Also, replacing microfilters and rebooting the router from time to time can make a world of difference.

blahblah4799d ago

more or less depends on how many friends you have. i had a really, really crappy provider and low bandwidth. not anymore, now i got rocky connection.

just my 2 cents from when i had my share of problems

it meant huge difference for me when i removed 10 friends to end up with 3 only. psn downloads awful lot of crap by it self, but checking online status and so on was complete disaster for me, i even noticed difference if i had active chat window or not. when i removed even those 3 to test, it was completely different world. but with 13 friends 99% of games were unplayable for me.

PSN runs pretty smooth for the most part, online games with friends in certain parts of Europe can be a mess but I suspect that is more of a problem on there end,or mine, and not psn.
My downloads are typically fast and painless, except towards end/beginning of month....numerous inquiries, always 'doing routine maintenance in area,in alloted time".Winter here, internet runs near flawless,summer...always problems.PSN almost always stable, decent speed, etc.Provider suspect however...

Yeah when my brother's net is capped it still works at his place fine. It seems to use hardly any as we can play games like CoD etc. online at 56kbps capped when he's used his d/l limit.

EDIT: that's in innner Melbourne, Australia

Neko_Mega4799d ago

4.5mbps and for PC, 360 and PS3. If it slows down all are effected by it.

Even if only one thing is running, I hope to maybe get 55mbps, seeing how I heard my friend had no problems with 30mbps.

i actually have always wondered this.
