GamePro Preview: Civilization V

This is the first time the enthusiast press got a chance to go hands-on with Civilization V, which GamePro first revealed in its world-exclusive cover story in its April 2010 issue. As such, it's the first time members of the press can properly evaluate the many changes Lead Designer Jon Shafer's implementing, such as the elimination of stacks in favor of single units, the addition of city states, and new uses for gold. I focused my 3-hour session on three of Shafer's most significant changes: combat, city-states, and gold.

How ideas of civilisation have shaped gaming

When I was a kid, I played a lot of Civilization 2. I played a lot of strategy games in general, but having a deep love of both history and sci-fi, the epic sweep of Civ 2 from prehistory to the stars held a particular appeal. I loved taking my little people from their huts and ziggurats to the world of science and advanced space-flight.
